Snap caps

Don't you hate it?
The sad look of a nice DR case with two empty "eye sockets", where the snap caps used to be...
I can't seem to find a good source for original looking Nickel plated snap caps for the double rifle calibers (either English or European).
I did find some advertised at NECG, but am not sure that they are correctly plated.
Most of the usual suspects (vendors) in the US just say "good luck".
Do you guys have any tip?

If they are standard Brirish calibres then I would suggest Holland & Holland in the Uk would be the likely source!

Hollands, Purdeys or Westley Richards will all get any size of snap caps run up for you, the maker of these is a chap named Mike Marsh, he makes virtually all the tools that accompany the fine rifles from these makers and has done so for many years. Gold plated or nickel plated are the usual options, although nickel is far more practical, not to say less costly.

Dropping an e-mail to any of these companies will get you a price estimate, They are not a low cost option however, the cost of a pair of snap caps here i nthe U.K by any one of these makers will be in the order of £60 - £70.

If your calibre is one of the more usual N.E ones then drop David Little a line ay Kynoch (Kynamco Ltd) in Mildenhall, Suffolk, England.

David has his caps built on fired brass cases to which he adds a hard plug of rubber to the primer pocker, I have used them in both .375 and .500 and they work just fine.

The cost of these here i nthe U.K is around £23 per pair, which is a fraction of the cost of the other makes, they are offered in nickel plated version only at present.

As far as I am aware you should be able to place a credit card order for these and have them shipped in a padded post packet to you homew address.

I bought the ones from NECG. They are unplated aluminum with what appears to be a polymer primer plug. Functional, Yes, suitable for a case, not in my opinion. I will call Galazan for my next pair. Lee.

It's not so important what the actual Snap Cap is
except for Aesthetic purposes. we all like the
Nickel Plated ones over the crap plastic.

The important part is the "polymer" primer plug
and what this is made of PLUS that it has a Spring
behind it that is set to the correct tension.

Personally, I don't like the snap caps with
Metal Primer Plugs.

I must admit that I think the Aluminium ones
don't look good.

Any comments ?

I agree with you on the looks of the things.
Nickel plated, shiny silver snap caps with the black rubber primer bumpers are the way to go in the appearance end of things.

As for a spring behind a rubber primer bumper, if it's made of the right stuff, there's no need for an additional spring.
Rubber is a spring. There is a great many different types of rubber-like stuff to make the primer bumper out of, I've made them out of very high durometer elastomer. They've all held up well.

The problem I have with "non" spring type is that
when the rubber gets "dented etc or ends up sitting
too far in, it doesn't provide enough of an impact resistance
to the firing pins.

Just my HO.

I turned a pair for my 577bpe out of aluminum. Used nylon for the primer. They work fine.
