Soft cases for double rifles?
      #57605 - 23/05/06 02:48 AM

Who makes soft cases designed for a dismantled double rifle, "leg-o-mutton" or other configuration? Preferably to take a butt and action in one section and the barrelled forend in a separate compartment. Any websites?

Boyt used to make one like that, but I think they're discontinued it.

I still see the Boyt's around. In fact saw one Sat and they were in the catalogs I got this spring.

I have one for a two barrel set. I use it on occasion when I've got to canoe back into our marshes since it slings over the shoulder and out of the way, and once in a while when I've got to hump back to a grouse hunting area. Other than that I have come to prefer a full length case. Its best use is to hold my six year old's BB gun and 22. If you are thinking about one for Africa I would suggest a full length soft case for use in the truck to help combat the dust.

The Boyts are still around, and Cabella's makes one exactly like it, probably made by boyt, and about half the price.

These work nice in the short Tuff-Pak! I can put two double rifles, and most of my other gear in the short Tuff-pak by useing these. I also take full size rifle slips to use in the Bakki while drivein around looking for tracks.

The Cabela's take down case is $49.99 US . The Boyt, which is the same thing is around $100 US, and I believe the Cabella's is the same case, without the Boyt name.

Boyt used to make one that took the butt and action in one end and the barrels in the other, and folded in the middle. I had heard that this model was being discontinued and I don't see it listed anywhere now. The ones they have listed now aren't the same.

I use the Boyt takedown cases. The medium will also hold a broken down Blaser R 93 and a scoped bbl.

However when I go to Africa I use a different system as the takedown cases and 2 full length cases is just too much weight.
I bought 2 full size guncases long enough to take apart the double, put the bbl in one end, the reciever in the other and fold the case in half. That way my rifles are broken down and less likley to have a broken stock. When hunting I then have 2 full sized cases.

I have two from Roosevelt & Drake:

Firm Leg-o-Mutton

and

Soft Leg-o-Mutton

I like both of them quite a bit.

Can I ask why you prefer the case for a rifle that has been broken down? I understand that a DR is less prone to damage when it is broken down, but you asked regarding a soft case, so it is obviously not for airline travel. I bought my case from Roosevelt and Drake, similar to this...http://www.drake.net/products/UK-Style-Soft-Long-Gun-Case?id=26064 Armbar.

ARMBAR, The take down soft cases are simply to protect the rifles while riding in the TUFF-PAK . Both my rifles, and most of my cloths, and other gear are also inside that TUFF-PAK. The TUFF-PAK I have is the take down model with a slide out handle, and wheels, and a small Knapp sak, and the cloths on my back plus the TUFF-PAK are all that is needed for a 3 week safari. Makes life so much easier.

Yes I was thinking about a takke-down TuffPak.

Also whe using a normal gun case I remove the padding from inside and instead place the firearm in a softcase inside instead.

I found the Boyt's site and the takedown softcases there are nice. I may get one.

But there is no way I can take a full length bag AND takedown bags so I might try "NE450No2" idea first ie using a full length softcase and folding it over. I do not have the luxury of a USA based resident's luggage allowance and will be taking kgs of camera gear as well.

Nitro,

I've done the full-length / foldover trick too. It works fine and gives you a full-length case to use on your hunt. Just make sure you get one plenty long, because the fold takes several inches of case.
