Hunting cape buffalo cows?

Has anyone here hunted cape buffalo cows or had friends who have done so?

When I was in Zim in 2002 I was offered a cape buffalo cow as a subsititute for a bull as we were having some problems finding one. Of course I was only interested in taking a bull not having hunted one before.

In 1994 I stayed on a farm (hunting) where a cape buffalo was mounted above a fireplace in the outside dining area. Another PH commented on it to the PH we were hunting with and then he replied in Sindebele to the guy. He told us later he told the PH the cape buffalo "bull" mount was actually a cow which is why he switched language, and the turkey didn't even know this before being told.

I am wondering if given the opportunity on a cow elephant hunt if a cow buffalo could be taken. I think asking for a bull would result in a whole new hunt being asked for or be too expensive. But a cow might be considered at a reasonable price. A simple skull mount would be nice on the wall. And I would consider having the hide made into several gun slips/cases in Bulawayo.

I shot a buffalo cow in Zim 2004 for lion bait. It was just as exciting as a buff hunt.

I have shot 2 cows and 2 bulls and the hunting is the same.

Also what makes up a good cow buffalo trophy?

John,

I personally reckon a Buff cow hunt can be just as exciting and as dangerous as a Buff bull hunt. I'd look for a big body and a wide spread....... in other words a mature animal. Take the trophy to a good taxidermist and if you want him to, he'll fill in the gap between the bosses and make it look a lot less cowish........

As to cost in Zim, I can't help you there, but the way things are going, maybe you should offer them a case of cokes and a few cartons of smokes........

If given the chance to take a Cape buffalo cow, I'd surely jump at the chance, provided I could still hunt a trophy bull on the same safari, and that trophy fee on the cow was reasonable.

I have killed three buff and one was a cow. The hunt is the same. Picking an old cow to shoot from the herd isn't unlike finding the right bull, though there are many more old cow canidates.

I was offered the cow since we were cat hunting and a cow makes as much bait as a truck full of impala, thus is time efficient, and makes a better lion bait.

I was told that my outfitter, Roger Whittall Safaris, reserves their cow quota for cat hunters. But toward the end of the season lots of things seem to come available. If you are hunting late perhaps you can pick up a bull for just the trophy fee, maybe even another tuskless. But you may not be able to do this in advance. Animals that I hunted that were unplanned in advance included two tuskless, a lion (saw no shooter), a hyhena (great fun to hunt over bait) and a chobie bushbuck.

Trophy fee for the cow was $800 as I recall.

Sounds about the number I was quoted a few years back.

All this is of course planning just in case it is possible.

Hi Jorge

It is my custom build 9.3x64, build on a M98 (DWM-Oberndorf) action. I use it myself for hunting in the bushveld, and also sometimes as a loaner rifle for DG hunting. the client with me did not have a appropriate rifle, so he used it to shoot this buff cow and a nice elephant bull with it. (BTW one shot each, I did back him up on his elephant, on his request, but was not needed.) The rifle was build by a South African friend, Gerrie Coetzee, wears a 1.25-4x24 Swarovski in QD mounts, and is one of my favourites. I had the basic rifle put together years back, and added the quarter rib and better stock about 5 years back. It has been refinished just before this hunt, which was in October 2004.

The first cow buff has magnificient horn length. The second almost has the appearance of a water buffalo.

1st and 3rd cow was taken in Zim. The 2nd one, (bowhunt) was taken in SA, next to Kruger park.

John,

I'v shot 2 cow buffalo one in Zim and one in Zambia. Both hunts were equally as exciting as a bull hunt and a lot less expensive. In fact had not Sadie noticed the little trees wiggling from the swishing of the mortally wounded cows tail we might have been in a pickle. The cow after being hit had only gone a hundred yards but had circled back on her trail and was waiting for us.
