510 kodiak express lever gun
      #49374 - 07/02/06 11:35 AM

I am looking for some 600grn hardcast wide flat nose bullets to load to 2000fps for a 510 kodiak lever gun made by Mic McPhearson. Can anybody help me out ? Actual bullet dia. is .510 like a 500 nitro. I'm looking to get around 5500 ft.lbs out of a 22" barrel. Would this make a good hunting gun ? I think it will be fun to shoot anyway.

What action is used, and what case? (length & head dia.)

600gr thats alot of lead to push that fast. as I have said on my few post I love recoil but even I at 295lbs. have my limits.
My 45-70G lever gun 18.5 barrel (ported) with Garretts 540 grain 1600fps rounds are enough recoil (Chamber Presure) for any lever gun. I guarntee they will get the job done.
My point is as bullet wieght goes up fps can go down and still alow you to get more done, 2000 fps for 600gr 510 kodiak weight retetion will become a real problom when any heavy boned animal is the game, and weight retention is the key to deep penetration and quick kills, the responsibility of any sportsman.
You could mill a mold or go to www.Mountainmolds.com they will build you just about any mold for any cal. and weight bullet.

What type of chamber presure's are you looking at?
I would only be concerned about the machanical lock up of a lever gun vs. say a bolt action. If you have taken these factors into consideration more power to you, sound like a real canon

Sounds like someone's putting a lot of faith in technology there.

A lever gun?
God that sounds like a lot of whack for a lever gun.

I agree here, with a straight .348 case necked to .50 being perhaps the largest case(.50 Alaskan) capable of chambering to a m71 Winchester and with top-end loads developing 1,760fps with a 600gr., I am not sure what case would be needed for a .50 cal 600gr. to make 2,000fps. I suggest that the 3" or 3-1/4" Nitro .50 case wouldn't fit so perhaps a new magnum Browning lever gun might be altered, but I don't know this for fact.
: Pressure wouldn't be high actually, as it is reasonable in the Nitro rifles, as long as a large enough case could be made to fit and work.

My gun is being built by M.L. McPherson from Colorado. He was the editor of cartridges of the world for several editions. weight 7.5 to 11 lbs, barrle length 16.5 to 30", several sight and finish options. My gun was appx. $2900.oo on my 1895 marlin 45-70. This included robar NP3 flat silver finish on all metal. MR.McPhearson can be reached through lever action .com or Gunsmith Mic<micmacgs@fone.net>. He is easy to talk too, a really nice guy. Hope this helps. This gun is in cart of wld. book Ken

I am much interested in knowing what the case being used is, and what is it's case length so it will fit the Marlin action?

Daryl, There are 2 companies that make brass for it, cost is about $1.25 each. I will have to get the company names for you.

Re: 510 kodiak express lever gun [Re: bigdog]

: The blown .348 case (.50 ALaskan) is usually taken as being the largest that will function in a Marlin, with an overall length of around 2.55" or a tiny bit more. It has a .545" head size, with a rim the same size as the .45/70. This is quite large with increased capacity, compared to the .505" head size of the .45/70 case.
: If by some stroke of machining, the Marlin will safely take an even larger case body, with it necked down to .50 cal, it may be possible to improve on these very worth-while ballistics.
: The trouble with 600gr. bullets in that .50 Alaskan case, is they take up available powder space, and since the rifle itself is restrcited to about 43,000CUP max, the 600gr. might get up to 1,800fps, perhaps not faster.
: At that rate, the FPE would run 4,314fps. Now, 1,800fps with a 600gr. bulet is certianly more than needed for most North American game, and most African, as well.
: With a 550gr. bullet, a velocity of 1,900fps might be attainable with the proper powder, but again, the bullets take up a lot of space within the Marlin's length restrictions. 550gr. at 1,900fps runs 4,406 fpe, which is quite incredible for a lever gun. This is why Harold Johnson liked the .50 Alaskan so much.
: If .348 cases are used, they are very easily formed, by opening up the necks to .375 and chamfering. .50 cal bullets, perhaps the 550gr., is chucked in a lathe, and 1/2 to 3/4 of the bullet's length is easily turned to .375". This is seated in the case over about 40 or 45gr. H4895, rest of the csse filled with plastic shot buffer and fired. The bullet's full dia. front end, seals the bore, while the light charge fo powder expands the case to full size. They are then trimmed to length, and you are ready to load full power loads. This 1/2 reduced bullet is the same method Jack Lott first used for forming his .458 Lott cases from .375 H&H mag cases.
: Lyman makes a 520gr. flat nosed bullet mould, and RCBS makes one that comes out at 550gr. in WW metal. Both are accurate bullets. NEI will have heavier bullet moulds available.

Thanks for the info. I may not be able to get 2000 fps with a 600 grain bullet, but that was my goal. I know I can attain 5500 ft/lbs with a 450 grain bullet. While 4400 ft/lbs is alot, this can be reached with 50 alaskan loads by Buffalo Bore ammunition,(factory load). Since the custom work and expense are involved, I am hoping to better 50 alaskan performance. It kind of defeats the purpose if it just matches the 50 alaskan. I will just have to work up slowly and see what she can do with 600 grain bullets. I want to push the limits, but only as long as it is safe and functionable. Thanks again, Ken

How about a 725 grain WFNGC in .510 diameter? I load these in my 50 Alaskan.

Having a 50 Alaskan in a Wild West Guide Gun, built on the 1895 Marlin platform, with brake, I know how much recoil the full boat loads generate. I admire the cartridge you are contemplating, but I'd rather watch you shot it than shot it myself. Dave

KDM - that's a good looking bullet - very similar (slightly shorter nose style) to the #462560 Lyman mould I use in my .458's at 560gr.
: Is that an LBT or NEI mould or do you make the moulds?

KDM, what is the over all length of the cartridge with the 725 grain bullets? What velocities are you getting and out of what barrel length? thanks

KDM, I have a 50 alaskan BFR revolver that has a long enough cylinder to handle these. I shoot both Buffalo Bore factory loads out of it now. With a 9 1/2" barrel it gets 1708 ft/sec with 525 grain bullets, and 1928 ft/sec with the 450 grain bullets. Not bad out of a 72 oz revolver. Mic McPherson should be getting 450 and 500 grain bullets from alaska bullet works this week to test my 510 K.E. Marlin conversion Then to robar for np3 finish and finally to me.I can't wait to shoot it! It has 23" bl, wt. 10 lbs, holds 7 rounds in the tube.

Wow.

I've always wondered about the barrel shank diameter {and thinness of the receiver wrapped around it..} on my 1895 in .45-70.

And this?

Wow.

My 725 grain WFNGC cast bullet loaded in the 50 Alaskan has a COL of 2.81". So far I have loaded it to 1500 fps out of my TC Encore with 24" barrel The mold is from MT Molds. It seems to penetrate anything directly in front of it...completely!
