I am looking for some help. I want a comprehensive listing of double rifle manufacturers in business today.
I am sure on this forum we can build a pretty comprehensive list.
I also think we will be surprised by the number or firms that actually produce them.
Countries:
United Kingdon Germany & Austria France & Belgium Italy Czech & Russia Other European? USA Other countries?
I can think of a few already. If you can provide any brief details that would also be appreciated eg only make under and overs, small and medium bores only, doubles only made in custom shop by order etc
Thanks.

I sort of like the Pedersoli Kodiak Mk IV Model L890.
Have owned Pedersoli BP Cartridge rifles in the past and enjoyed them a lot - this seems like it would be a reasonable quality entry level double.
Anyone with knowledge/opinions of these as a first double??

I'm not sure if Martini-Hagn still do, but they did dabble with a double based on Hagn's single shot falling block design a few years back. Not exactly the classic boxlock or sidelock double, but I'm sure it was one well put together and fine performing action. Just thought we could recognize our fine Canadian brethern.

Hi Mickey, I have heard of most of the manufacturers but the one which I have not heard of is Peter V Nelson in England. A very small manufacturer perhaps. I did an internet search and came up with nothing. I am currently looking for a double in 470 NE and a small manufacturer may be the way to go.
Do you have an address or any contact details?
Thanks and Regards
Phil

Peter is a very high end maker of Shotguns and Doubles. I believe he may have been the headgunmmalker at Purdy at one time. He is the designer behind the original Hartmann and Wiess rifles. He is also a direct descent of Lord Nelson of Trafalgar fame.
I think he may only make a couple of shottys and one Double Rifle a year and is quite expensive but worth every penny. Maybe one of the top 2-3 Gunmakers in the world.

OK here is a summary of those suggested so far. Thanks for the great response and also some very enjoyable photos.
UK * Purdey * Holland & Holland * Westley Richards * W.J. Jeffery * Watson Bros * John Dickson * McNaughton * E.J. Churchill * Cogswell & Harrison * William Evans * Charles Lancaster (are these currently made?) * John Wilkes * Alexander Henry * Willaim Douglas * Peter V Nelson * Boss & Co (UK?)
Italy * Zanardini * Rizzini * Beretta * Peruggini & Visini * Renato Gamba * Pedersoli
France & Belgium * Francotte * Chapuis * Verney-Carron * LeBeau Courally * Marcel Thys * Domoulin (sp? too) * Harald Wolf (??)
Germany & Austria * Merkel * Krieghoff * Blaser * Johann Fanzoj * Peter Hofer * Josef Just * Scheiring * jacob Koschat * Hambrusch * Heym * Fuchs * Fennerwerk/Valmet/Tikka
Spain * Arrieta
USA & Canada * Rigby * Searcy * Dakota * Martini-Hagn * Winchester (or are these out of production?)
Russia * Baikal * IZP (????)
Czech * CZ (I assume they still do?)
50 malers so far.
Added the double barreled bolt action Fuchs to the list. How could they be forgotten!
Frankonia ??? - I believe made their own doubles or were they sub-contracted? Also Harold Wolf - I believe he was making doubles as well (from memory) or just bolt rifles? Plus the old Valmet 412/Tikka 77K/Fennerwerk with its adjustable barrels in U/O configuration. There is a really ugly but cheap Russian rifle too. Its initials escape me currently - IZP, ???? I'm guessing Winchester & CZ still make doubles - perhaps not Winchester?
Any mistakes that I have made above, please let me know.
Gryphon - I will check out your Ferlach link still. Thanks for that as I knew there were a lot missing from there.
Thanks again for those suggestions. As I thought there would be more than at least I expected. Still more I believe.

Concerning Verney-Carron and the Double Rifle shown in 470Nitro (06/11/03 10:22 PM) message, this side by side model is not available from Verney-Carron anymore. However, the over&under Sagittaire NT Double Express is an interesting double rifle with a good quality/price ratio and the availability of 12 gauge, 20 gauge and even .410 aditional barrels that can be fitted on the same receiver. Verney-Carron also propose on its rifles an extraordinary patented sight system, (L'Infaillible Optimum).

NitroX Hope this might be of some use. I think it's "DUMOULIN". I don't think Harold Wolfe makes any double rifles however he was knocking up a drilling in 577 NE 577 NE (2 3/4) over a 12 G. I dont believe Winchester has built any double rifles since the Grand European OU guns which were finished by mid 1980's. Baikal make a fugly OU rifle that I think is a 1ZH-94 or similar. Another possible entry could be Ziegenhahn & Sohn as there was an advert in Hatari Times #13. Also maybe Sarasqueta from Spain?? Zoli?

I'm not sure if Sarrasqueta is still making doubles. I've seen several 375 doubles but all of them was from the sixties. I'll try to know.

Great Post. Related to this subject: Have an EJ Churchill 450/400 NE SXS Boxlock, SN 41XX, that needs restocking. Does anyone have good photos of this vintage of Double Rifle? The stock on this gun has been completely disfigured by a previous owner's attempt to repair. I have a beautiful piece of the correct wood for new stock and forend. I want this restocking to be vintage correct. Thank you in advance for your help. Best Regards, Wes.

Hey, another wanderer. Welcome. What year was your rifle made? Does it have a cheekpiece? What typ, if any, recoil pad? Pistol grip?
They are all pretty much alike in design. Make sure that you have a stocker who does Doubles. If you change the length or weight too much you may have to have it reregulated.
Colour can also be important. You don't want to end up with one that looks like it was just done. Even if it was.

Rifle was made 1929. When I purchased it last year the stock was so modified that one cannot determine if it had a cheekpiece. The previous owner(before me) said he had no information on it because he purchased it an an Estate Auction 3 years previously and the owner previous to him had passed on 2 years before that. He only bought it as an investment and never shot this rifle. It has the typical British red recoil pad and the typical pistol grip with Buff Horn Cap. The stockmaker is very experienced with Double Gun restoration. EJ Churchill Double SXS NE Rifles with Box Lock Action are today pretty rare. Now I am trying to find a photo of something typical to 1929-1930. Any suggestions are much appreciated. The factory has so far not been of any help. Best Regards, Wes.

Mick, I agree with you and Thank you for getting me back on the right tract... The most important criterion for stockmaking is that it properly fit the owner. As a side note: I found out why I have not heard back via Email from the EJ Churchill factory. My message to them just came back to me undelivered. I think it is because of this Norton AntiVirus software on my computer. I turned the Email scanning off. Hopefully, this message to them will get through. Best Regards, Wes.
