New to the board but not lacking an opinion

Did anyone mention the 375H&H?

Well, besides that the 7x57r is a class act, and the 175 has worked out very well for me. In a pinch you can fire standard 7x57 in it but I wouldn't try that on anything that can eat you, as extraction is nonexistant.

How about having 2 made up as everyone should have a #1 in .375?

BTW, SDH, how about a shot of the off side of that #1?
Looks like a very nice modification.

Haven't checked in for a while. I was in Namibia, June '05 the rifle is a .30-40, sidelever conversion, major metalwork by the late John Madole, the rest from my shop. I've been shooting and hunting with it for a decade. Here's a pic of the lever side.

Thanks SDH.

Nicely executed. Side levers are great and not quite as common as they should be. Very classy piece.

Perfect wood too.

Ravenwolf,
Keith developed the 338-74 Keith cartridge in 1979/71, and wrote about it in his Gun Notes article in Guns&Ammo in August 1971, as well as dec. 1977 and dec. 1979. I'll send you a PM on this.
With Nosler 250 grains bullet he got 2711fps; 49950 pfs pressure.
With 275 grains Speer: 2580pfs / 50220 psi pressure.

Here is a drawing of the cartridge:
http://www.again.net/~steve/jpg/cd33874keith.jpg

I have not found anyone stocking reamers or dies for this cartridge, but I haven't looked real hard yet.

I am in complete agreement with .500 NItro on this re-barrel.
; A friend of mine just did the reverse- going from .375H&H to .17AckleyHornet for his wife's gopher shooting.
: A flanged .375 would be so - "RIGHT" for the Ruger#1.
: I recently made up a .375/'06 ICL IMP on a MK10 Mauser which gets slightly better ballistics than the .375 flanged data in Barnes book, and actually does 2,470fps. with 300gr. Hornady's soft and solid.
: These loads ware with "Extreme" powders & were developed in the heat (such as it was) of June, this year.
; Although definitely not needed in B.C. for moose or big bear, it is comforting to have the power & certianly flat shooting enough for 300 to 350yds. shots, especially with Barnes "X" or failsafe bullets.
: The belted .375H&H, or 9.3X62mm or 9.3X64mm would make nice rounds, but the flanged magnum would be "SPECIAL".

Hello guys! I'm new to the site, and like this tread! I hope I'm not too late to join in. I had a Ruger #1 in 458 that was fun, but not practical. I love the gun beause it had a custom stock to my length of pull in maple and walnut laminate. I had the rifle rebarreled to 7mm STW stainless steel, heavy contour by Shillen. I love the gun, but it is heavy! I am not complaining, I'm a big guy! I have a factory Ruger #1 7MM STW in stainless as a companion gun.

I like the idea of the 9.3X74R as a conversion for the Ruger #1. I own a 9.3X74R Valmet double, and I like to have more than one long gun in a caliber. Thanks for the G R E A T idea that you put in my head.

Glenn

I had a No. 1 in 375 built in the 70's in tropical grade. I really loved it and wish I would have kept it. But I needed the money and sold it. It was one of the most natural feeling guns to hold I have ever shot.

Great, now I have to have another one again, add another gun to the list of "have to's".

One of the great things about a single shot like the Ruger #1 is cartridge length is no problem. Infact, a longer cart. helps me speed my reload when neccessary.
I have a #1 in .338x74K & love the round. With a long bullet like the 225grNAB, LOA is right at 4.00". You can easily get 2800fps w/ this bullet & the round is just very cool to load for & shoot. I recommend it or a straight 9.3x74R. If you are going custom, might as well go custom.

I don't know how far along you are on this project, but I read on another forum that Ruger plans to introduce the 1H in 9.3x74R in 2006. That should serve your purpose nicely.

DPhillips,

My gunsmith confirmed this with his account rep at JSC this morning. (http://www.jerryssportscenter.com/) Account rep advised it will be a regular cataloged item; should be priced the same as the other No. 1-H's. Like they did with the .405 Winchester in the No. 1. My guess is that the No. 1 in 9.3x74R will become "official" at the SHOT show in February.

Of course, we'll have to wait and see if Ruger actually gets them out the door.

I just heard that rumor myself and will be saving my pennies for when one if they come out. I haven't done a lot with the 1B in 22-250 yet so maybe I'll wait a might longer and see what Ruger does...RW

How about my old #3 rebarrled in 500/450 to match my new double Hollis & Sons. This could be my backup gun, and being chambered in the same round I wouldn't have to deal with different ammo. Hum that sounds like a good idea.

Should cost maybe about $1200.00 to do I would think.

I just got all my shooting goodies for the Jeffery 450No.2 last night and I was thinking how easy and cool a Ruger No. 1 trobical would be chambered in 450No.2

I checked the Ruger web site
no mention of any new caliber
in the #1 ; but you can now
buy a Ruger Dodge truck.
Where are the priorities?

When I ordered some parts from
Ruger today I inquired about the
9.3x74r and was told it was new.
I pointed out it was not on the web
site catalog. I was given another
number to call there they told me
that none were scheduled for February;
but to call back in March and they
could tell me if any are scheduled.
I will follow up next month.

Has the 9.3X62 been mentioned? it is a great cartridge. If you want some real power and penitration check out the .366 DGW I have built several on the Ruger # 1 actions. You can find info on the cartridge on page 201 of the tenth edition of Cartridges of the World or at customguns.us

The 9.3x74 is a very fine caliber. I took all my animals with a Merkle O/U including Buff and was pleased as punch with it. Fun to shoot and good out to 300yds. I like the 287 Woodlieghs. Yes it does look good in a leather cartridge belt for sure.

If you're going to the trouble of rebarreling a #1 do it in a cartridge that's not available from Ruger. I think either .270 wsm or .300 H&H would be a good choice.

my dealer to inquire again. Maybe
soon.
