Would you use your Brown Bear Tag on a Wolvrine?

A few years ago I was on a Brown Bear Hunt on the Pennisula. We were hunting from a fishing boat and saw a Wolverine walking down the beach. Another fellow that was there wanted to get in the skiff and try to take it. He only had a Bear tag and wold have had to use it on the Wolverine. (In Alaska you can substitute animals of like tag value. The Wolverine was a bit cheaper so he could use it.)

The outfitter told him it was his choice but that he could not get another BB tag to replace it even though he had not shot one.

What would you have done?

I'd let that sucker walk! For me the big bear is a MUCH greater trophy.

That may be so but I am speaking in terms of my own personal preference. I would rather have a big bear in my trophy room than a wolverine. The cost of a Brown Bear hunt is so great that it would be a once in a lifetime hunt for me. Between the 2 I would take the Brown bear.

I would try the wolverine, it's pretty much difficult to hunt. You can try a black bear at any time.

BTW, I only had seen one while hunting Brown bear at the peninsula and I'd not a tag for it (There was no season too)

They sound like one of those chance trophies rather than a trophy that is specifically sought for.

If I travelled all the way from Oz for a brown bear I doubt I would take it unless it was the last day of the hunt.

However IF I already had a BB from a previous hunt and was after something else as a first preference it would be something different I guess.

There's no way I'd use a Brown Bear tag on a Wolverine unless I was unsuccessful in taking a bear, and on the last afternoon I was walking to the bush plane and one happened to stumble into camp. Bottom line is to be prepaired and purchase a tag for Wolverine before you leave for camp.

Talking about wolverines,i have never seen one before.It's not found in my part of the world.From what i've heard it's a pretty ferocious animal and kills for the pleasure of killing.Is this true?

They can be ferocious if cornered. Mean little chits, I can tell you that. They don't play well with others, and tend to very aggressive toward other, larger animals. While most of the stories you hear about them are exaggerations, they are very powerful and a dang handful when cornered. They are smelly animals and in the weasel family. Can get to 12 to 16 inches tall and up to about 3 feet (1 Meter or so). They are a grand trophy and make a gorgeous full body mount. The license to take a wolverine is pretty cheap, and I would have a tough time transfering a much more expensive license to the animal.

I don't think they kill for the sake of killing. They may kill while having another food source nearby, but would imagine its for teaching the cubs how to kill or for caching food for future use. Wolverines have a tough time. They aren't very fast due to their short stubby legs. They have problems in deep snow. They are scavengers for the most part, but will lie in wait for prey to come by.

What would be left of your Wolverine trophy after you shot it with your bear rifle??
Being from columbus, Ohio and an Ohio State Grad-- we are always very happy when a Wolverine is slain!

If I had a Wolverine tag, there would two holes, entrance and exit. Just patch up the holes for the mount. After all, if you're going after BB, you're a fool not to take the biggest boomer that you've got.

I've only seen one wolverine, ever. It stunk up our camp something awful, got into a heavy wooden larder box, and bit holes in every can of butter and bacon. This was on the Burnt River in Northern BC when I was 13. He scared the crap out of me, and still does!

I understand they are about the only predator that a procupine has. Is this another "urban legend"?

Being from Michigan it would be OUTRAGEOUS and sinfull to shoot a Wolverine I would much rather blast several buckeyes For those of you in the rest of the world the Wolverine is the University of Michigan Mascot. I would never pass on a Brownie for a wolverine simply due to the cost of the hunt which probably averages around 10k just for the outfitter. I would however instantly pass on a black bear for a chance at one. I have only seen one once in my life. I was riding my motorbike and one ran out in the middle of the road, stopped and looked sideways at me as if to say " What are you doing on MY road ?". I had instant visions of hitting the criter, biting the pavement and being torn apart by a giant weasel. I have some very large black bears on my hunting property and I would much rather suprise one of them in the Cedar swamps than a Wolverine or even a Badger.

I saw a Martin kill a Porcupine up in northern Maine.

Martin are tough and smart. I believe that wolverine are the one animal that can get away with killing and...eating...a porcupine.

The biggest problem I have always had in my camps up North...N. Montana, B.C., and SE Alaska were with Martin. They are master safe crackers and always find a way into the goodies. Wolverine take a more direct appraoch...rip and tear...

Ann yes I did. I saw there are theories that it crossed the ice from Ontario. I believe we have always had a very small population. Theese guys like Badgers are often nocturnal. It is certainly a very cool event and it had me pulling out the Nikon dreaming of one good photo.

Well you never really know with this stuff, especialy with the number of exotics people keep. My wife has a co-worker that lives right between you and I. His next door neighbor has a lion. It was not so long ago that every one thought Warner Glenn was full of sheep dip when he started telling people their are still Jaguar's in the American SW. More than a few people had to eat a little crow when that old cowboy got his photo's and published a book. Mother nature is pretty crafty and can pull some real blind punches.

Hope the neighbor feeds his lion regularly. Too damn expensive of a pet. I like small reptiles for exotic pets. They are easy to keep and won't munch on anybody.

What else are door to door salesmen and 'charity' collectors used for? If you are lucky they come regularly too.
