I am looking at getting a drilling ,the Merkel in Australia 12x12/.22Hornet is available although I would rather a bigger rimmed cartridge for fox, goats, 'roos etc. Anyone have advice on makes and calibres and what sights are best . This gun will be mostly used as shotgun. Thanks

I wouldn't get a drilling in 22 Hornet. Not a good cartridge IMHO.
Would suggst 222 or something like that.
Merkels good.
ALternatively, buy a good shotgun and then buy a cheap Boito 12Gauge / 22 cal or something.

Yes I think the .22H is not the best , I was thinking of a 5.6x52R or there abouts calibre, any bigger and I think I would carry a rifle not a drilling. I would probably go with the Merkel as not much else in Australia but Merkel is a sound gun.

5.6 x ??? was the calibre I was thinking of.
It is popular in Europe and components are readily available.

5.6x52R is the old .22 Savage Hi-Power it throws a 71grain projectile at 2,700fps not a true 22 its bore is .228". Norma still make ammo

Granite Arms has given me a price $7200! I expected a figure about top end $5000 I think I will look around for a good used one,

Steve,
The recommended retail price, for the Merkel 96K, is $7287 but you should be able to find a dealer who will do a bit better than this price. Granite Arms do not sell direct to the public and so always quote RRP and not best price. Do some arm twisting and see how you go.
I think that the 96K is available in .222 Rem and 5.6x52R (.22 Hipower) - at least the latest Merkel brochure, which I am looking at now, lists these calibres and no longer lists the .22 Hornet. We have been asking Merkel for .222s for some time so maybe they have finally listened. I can confirm that for you, if you like - yes, I work for Granite Arms, and I guess that I had better update the website, too! (yes, I am also Granite Arms' webmaster).
Your other option is to look for a good secondhand drilling but, in my experience, most of the secondhand guns (in good condition) will cost you $5,000 plus! I know, because I have always been on the lookout for a good secondhand drilling and haven't found a cheap one, yet. The only relatively inexpensive drillings, I have found, have been old guns chambered for odd calibres like 8x57JR or 9.3x72R.
I am not trying to talk you out of looking for a secondhand drilling, just stating what I have observed.
If you need any more info on the Merkels, please let me know.

Merkel make nice smooth classy drillings 96K in 20/76 - 6,5x57R. Load with a 120-140 grs Barnes X or Nosler BT, and you souldn't have any problems with roos or pigs.

Drilling?
Naw, get a vierling: 12 ga x 12 ga x 9.3 x 74R x 9.3 x 74R.
Or perhaps a one gun does it all system, such as 12 ga x 470 NE x 308 win. x .22 LR.
Or get Peter Hambrusch to make you a 470 NE x 470 NE x 470 NE triple for about US$50K.

Bob, I have ordered the Merkel 12x12/5.6x52R very expensive but why not! I notice most drillings have 6.5mm to 9.3mm calibres but I think to big for what I want (fox, Hare etc) if hunting game that needs a 9.3 I think I would stick to a rifle but mine is primary a shotgun first.
