Happyness is a new flintlock!
      #395593 - 08/01/26 05:22 AM

Gentlemen,
here is my new shotgun to hunt woodcocks!
Of course, I'll have to take it to my gunsmith to fix this hammer. It’s a 22 bore, it is light, I’m happy with it!
It is signed Michel Berleur. He was established in Liège between 1780 and 1815. Guillaume’s brother, a family of gunsmiths.

imho, a very typical gun for the napoleonic time.
a 22 ga is a problem when it comes to wads. I made the maths: 454,4 gr / 22 = 20, 65 gr leadball = 15,2 mm diameter

maybe 20 ga wads will work if you can get them. for repairing the hammer I would give it to an experieced TIG welder, they do wonders.

I would try the thin 20bore "B" wads first. 2 over the powder, one over the shot. We have found this type of load shoots quite well in a cylinder bored gun.
In one with quite rough bores, I used 3 thin cards between powder and shot.
The reason for the thin wads, is they will not punch through the shot cloud to create do-nut patterns like heavier donnaconna wads are prone to do.(especially lubed).
I have been able to fire 10 rounds, one after the other, just using the thin "B" wads as noted above.
If those wads are too difficult to used, then making a .605" arch punch is another option.

Nice, would be fun to hunt some birds with a flintlock. How long would it take to load?

It's quite a imposition to use a flintlock BP muzzleloader on woodcock flying lightning. Making it more difficult. And sporting. Wonderful.

One of our gentleman shooters at a clay target shoot, field clays, used a BP shotshell shotgun. It was noticeable how much slower his ignition was, needing to kead the clays more. But we also worked out his BPNshotshelkscwere much under loaded with the BOM charge,

A flintlock ML BP shotgun must be quite slow igniting.

Looking forward to field reports.

My oldest family gun is smaller bore percussion hammer ML shotgun. My Great-Grand pas, or even Great-Great. Not in good condition as it may have been buried during a world war when the pommie jackboots authorities confiscated guns from "German" Australian citizens who had been in Australia longer than themselves. Its a bit rusted. I think it's possibly unsafe now.
