Bear Hunt report, August 28 to September 6, 2025, In Canada

Saturday August 30 My son and I flew to Winnipeg, MB Canada to hunt bear with outfitter Harry Walker of Sandy River Outfitters. https://www.sandyriveroutfitters.com/ We were booked for a 6-day hunt for baited bears.

We spent Saturday night in a hotel at Winnipeg Airport. Sunday morning Harry picked us up at the hotel and drove us out to his hunting property near Powerview-Pine Falls, Manitoba. The property consists of three lodges and a warehouse. From this location Harry operates 70 bear bait stations, some sites several hours from camp.

We stayed in a nice modern lodge-a three-bedroom lake cabin. Standard outfitter bunks in each room, single bed on top double bed on bottom. The lodge was clean and neat with fresh clean bedding and towels provided. Food was home cooked and incredibly Good. Harry’s wife Angie was our cook. I will get to that later.

Normally Harry has only 8 hunters per week. This week we had 9 hunters to accommodate a father and his two sons. There were 5 hunters staying in our lodge. The other 4 stayed in the neighboring lodge.

Hunting is afternoons only with hunters going to the blinds about 2pm and staying until last shooting light, about 8:30 pm. No morning hunting as there is too much chance of bumping bears in the dark, going in.
Hunting sites are stocked with a bait barrel and either a ground blind or a tree stand. Baits were refilled when you go to the stand and were obviously being used. Bait was old bakery goods. I hunted from a ground blind.

My son took his bear the first using his 30-06 with Vortex bullets.

I took my bear the second night night.

My rifle is a Ruger No. 1 in 450.400 3” NE with a Leupold VX®-3HD 1.5-5x20mm scope using 400 gr. Barnes TSX bullet in handloads.

The guides took those of us who had tagged out early fishing on the lodge pontoon boat on the Winnipeg River. We caught walleye, northern pike and small mouth bass. Pike and bass were catch and release for us. Walleye were catch and eat.

Since my son and I were flying we decided to have our hides processed into rugs in Canada. My US Taxidermist had suggested I at least have the hide tanned in Canada and shipped down. But after all consideration the cost of having everything done in Canada and then shipped to us was less than if we shipped and finished in the US. The cost include customs processing as well as shipping.

Saturday September 6 Harry drove us back to Winnipeg Airport and my son and I flew home

In summary I was incredibly pleased with this hunt. I have hunted with several outfitters over the past 35 years. Some good, some exceptionally good and a couple, mediocre. I must rank Harry Walker and Sandy River Outfitters as one of the best. Harry and his crew were warm, cordial, and personable. They went out of their way to make sure we had a great hunt. They were knowledgeable and skilled. Food was great, accommodations were clean and neat, equipment was well maintained, and game was present. If you are considering an Outfitted hunt for Bear, I would suggest Harry Walker and Sandy River Outfitters. Harry also offers whitetail deer and wolf hunts. https://www.sandyriveroutfitters.com/contact-us/

Nice looking animals. Imagine the 450 400 would make a pretty handy bear rifle. The fishing would be a nice bonus.

Ahh, jacketed lead core with plastic tip. That's nre for Barnes, for sure.
Can't help but wonder if it's someone else's bullet with building metal jacket.
One link I found said to make sure your barrel is clean to steel before shooting them. Interesting.

Interesting. When I Googled Barnes Vor-Tex ammo, it came up with 6.5 Creedmoor ammo Vor-Tex saying it was lead core.

DD,

That looks like a great hunt for both you and your son. I may try to hunt black bear there, based upon your report.

Is there any issue in bring ammunition from the US into Canada? Does it have to be factory loaded or can one bring handloads.

I always wanted to shunt bear with my 62 cal ML DR but don't think I can travel with percussion caps and black powder. Too bad. It would make a nice story, taking a bear withan 185 year old rifle.

Did Sandy River Outfitters recommend someone who processed your hides into rugs?

Again, great hunt and thanks for posting.

When you check in at the air lines you must tell them you have a rifle even if you have a big rifle case. They will ask you if the rifle is loaded. Then they will give you a red tag that you sign saying the rifle is unloaded. You then place that tag in the rifle case and lock it.

The airlines should ask you if have ammunition. When you say yes they will ask additional questions. Do you have more than 11lbs/5 kilos? Is it packed in original carton or boxes specifically design hold ammunition for Airline travel? Do you have any loose ammunition. Is the ammunition packed separate from the firearms. No ammo carried in magazines.

I flew Delta Airlines. Here is their requirement to fly with firearms and ammunition. Scroll down to the section on shooting equipment. Check with your specific airline for any special rules they may have.

https://www.delta.com/us/en/baggage/special-items/sporting-equipment

The airline employee appeared to be asking these questions working from screen prompts on her computer.

My son traveled with a tuff pak. He had ammo, rifle and gear all in one.

Ammo must be packed separate from rifle.

My ammo was packed in 20 round MTM plastic box and was all handloads.

When we got to Canada we had clear Canada Customs. We had our completed but unsigned Canadian Firearm Declaration. The Customs officer compared the form with the firearm and entered the information in his computer.

The officer did pick up my sons rifle to inspect it. This was the first problem. While the Officer seem familiar manipulating the bolt action rifle, he proceed to sweep everyone in the room with rifle. He verified the rifle was unloaded and checked that the serial number matched forms and computer.

My son and I cringed, but we kept our mouths shut. Not the time or place to lecture on firearms safety.

The second problem came when the Officer put rifle back in the case in the Tuf-pak. He asked my son where is his ammo was and my son said in the bottom of the box. The Custom Officer said airline regulations require ammo to be carried in separate bag from firearm.

I knew this was correct and spoke telling my son, so the customs officer could hear, i would carry his ammo in my bag on the way. At this the Customs officer sent us on our way home.

When we were checking in for return home flight, I followed the airline protocol and checked in. Iwas then sent to bag security. I was stopped from passing security and returned to the airline as my bag containing ammunition was not locked and my ammunition was not in a locked container. The airline supervisor walked me through security telling them there was no requirement for ammo to be in locked container flying from Canada to the US.

My bag was sealed with a zip tie and sent on its way.

Small little blips, nothing big but just plan ahead. Next time I fly with guns, CYA I will have a lockable box for ammo. Not required, but I will have it.

You can take your reloads to Canada.

After writing the airline info above I went out to the shop and got out my sons ammo, and here is what it actually is.

He had 100% penetration and lots of blood.

DD,

Thanks again for tyhe information and the update.

Earlier, I wrote: I always wanted to shunt bear with my 62 cal ML DR but don't think I can travel with percussion caps and black powder. Too bad. It would make a nice story, taking a bear withan 185 year old rifle."

I checked with Sandy River Outfitters about caps and black powder and they said they would buy what was needed.

I thought that was great info for anyone traveling into Canada who would like to shoot a traditional muzzleloader.

I am glad to hear that Delta requires ammo to be separate from guns as I am flying to Bend, OR to hunt geese. I used to hunt geese in the Eaqstern Shore, MD and put boxes of steel BBB shell in my gun case. In 2020, I had also traveled to Alaska with my Glock 40 and a box of 220 gr HC ammo in a locked box. I guess TSA is tightening their regulations but don'tunderstand their logic.

Thanks DD. Might have imbibed too much liquid medi ine when I Googled that ammo. I do recall the green tipped guilding-metal bullets.

Make sure that guide knows the difference between real black powder and the phony crap.
