Annual Pilgrimage for Antlers
      #391444 - 04/05/25 05:16 PM

The recent Queensland school holidays saw the good wife and I travel to The Sunshine State for some grand-kid time in the Whitsundays, then on to Brizzy for the rellie circuit. It was well past mid-April by the time we made it up to the farm on Cressbrook Creek. The first day was spent working on guttering for the machinery shed, followed by barbeque and shiraz, and I was a little uneasy at the complete silence from any stags within the valley that evening and overnight. According to the locals they had been roaring their heads off up to the previous weekend, but the rut had finished just as I arrived! Damn! Usually I have the opposite problem, arriving too early!

Despite some overnight rain, the next morning was crisp and clear so at first light, with more optimism than expectation, I headed off up the main spur towards the divide. By keeping just off the western side of the ridgeline my ascent was in deep shade as the first rays of the morning sun began to warm the eastern face of the opposite slope. I hoped that any stags still damp from the cold rain would be out catching a little sun before bedding down for the day.

My vigilance paid off when a young 4x4 stag came into view sunning himself on the open hillside directly across from my position. I sat to watch him for a while and soon noticed movement further up the incline as a much better stag stepped out from behind a bush and began browsing on lantana berries. This was more like it! A big-bodied dark animal with heavy main-beams and visible top-tines so at least a ten pointer. He'll do for starters!

Judging the distance at around 200 metres or perhaps a little less, I left the range-finder in my pack and decided to just do it! With a rock-solid seat against a tree-trunk and elbows on knees, I expected him to drop at the shot but he immediately bolted straight downhill and was quickly lost to view in the lantana-choked gully. Uh-oh...

Absolute silence followed, so after a few minutes I climbed down into the steep ravine to look for the fallen quarry but my efforts were in vain. Scaling the opposite slope to the spot where the stag received the bullet did not reveal a single drop of blood, so I mapped-out a left and right of arc in the gully floor and spent the next 40 minutes or so searching under every lantana bush and rock-fall to no avail. With great disappointment I moved up to a small bench in the hillside preparatory to moving out and there he was, lying stone dead!

Not sure why the entry wound on the shoulder had closed up but it was a heart shot as it turned out, and he must have made a hard left when just out of my sight to end up where he was. Unfortunately my futile search of the gully floor had given the meat ants time to find him, and they made recovery of the venison rather uncomfortable to say the least!

Happening upon this stag so early on the first morning of my hunt, followed by meat recovery and returning to the big smoke to boil out the head, would essentially rob me of the next couple of days I had planned in the hills. ...so I sat for a long time looking out over the valley below and soaking it all in while the backstraps and rumps cooled in the shade. Wonderful stuff!

Great result. Always fantastic to have a happy ending to a search mission. ;-)

Well done.

Well done and a good one at that.
We would call that a 5X5.

Well done.

Yes, as Dryl says 5 point or 5x5 for elk and mule deer, 10 point for whitetail.

What deer is it?

I checked Google for Australian English to American English translator-no luck.

So I am guessing when you say rellie circuit in American that would be visiting the relatives, or would it?

Yes DD, doing the rounds of the relatives on both sides of the family.
I think we use 5x5 or 10-pointer interchangeably in Oz, but all bets are off for fallow deer!
These Queensland red deer are referred to as "the heritage herd" being descended from a few animals gifted to the colony of Queensland by Queen Victoria before Federation.

Here in BC whitetails are counted one side only if even on each side, so with that shirt one being over an inch in length, it would be a 5 point whitetail - here, aanr as a muley ot elk. If uneven the 4x5, or 5x6 - whateverlooked like a red deer stag go me. Very similar to rocky mountain elk, except for colour.

That short bez tine was actually full-size but broken off near the base early in the rut, judging by the worn edges. Tip of the trez tine was chipped off too...
Perhaps this detracts from the trophy quality in some hunters' eyes but I quite like the fact that he must have been a fighter!

I remembered that these animals can be called "Windsor Stags" because Queen Victoria selected them from the grounds of Windsor Castle to send over to Queensland in 1873. Cool bananas!

Well done mate!
Sounds like you were worried for a while not finding the stag.
Looks like a nice head mate, bet he tasted nice too!

What are meat ants? Is that what I see under the eye in your picture?

Agree 100 percent. No better trophy than a broken, scarred up animal.
Those Queensland reds were protected until into the early 90s and you had to get a permit to hunt them. I remember being on the ADA executive and fighting the removal of their protection. We thought they would get wiped out. May have miscalculated there. Those first Reds were released on Cresbrook Station, probably near where you were.

Thanks for your comments, gentlemen.

"Sounds like you were worried for a while not finding the stag."
Understatement of the year!!

Quote:

What are meat ants?

I could use lots of swear words, but in truth they are very efficient "recyclers" of anything made of meat that dies in the bush.
A fairly large ant with strong mandibles, and not afraid to use them on anything or anyone they perceive as a threat,
especially someone trying to remove bits of a fresh carcass they have "found".
...and they SWARM!
Fortunately they only bite and can't sting.

Close-up of the stag's eyes when I finally found him:

He had been dead for no more than an hour but was covered in the little buggers.
Tried repeatedly to brush them off for the photo but by the time I set the timer and jumped into frame they were back!
Did I mention they were tenacious?!

They have a strong smell of formic acid and need to be completely removed from the meat as soon as possible.
I also trim the meat a bit more than might otherwise be needed before cutting it up.
A single meat ant in the gob would definitely ruin the venison experience!

Wow! Incredible, glad we don’t have to deal with them. I’ve never even encountered a tic on a carcass over decades of hunting. Looks like good eating.

Luckily the ants don't always turn up: in this case my tardiness was to blame!

They do have their uses:

Meat-Ants doing a fine job of cleaning up a head.

Unfortunately ticks are a common occurrence east of the main range, and this fellow had quite a few.
Our 'Cattle Ticks' don't seem to like humans much, although some people are susceptible.
I've never had one latch on. ...thankfully!

Just looked up meat ants on antwiki where they are described as "extremely pugnacious"!

Well done T. From your description I guessed it was heart shot.

Do you shoulder mount, or skull/skull cap your trophies?

Take the venison home? How do you do it? Big ice box/Esky, fridge/freezer?

John:
I haven't taken a red stag cape yet, so just the antlers and head for a "euro mount" or cut down later for a skull-cap mount.
I do bring out as much venison as I can carry, typically both backstraps and rumps.
If it's cool enough I will excavate the tenderloins, and I did take the blades off a fat stag a few years ago. They were definitely worth taking!
Unfortunately the blades are often damaged by the bullet.
Only once have I shot a stag on the flat, allowing retrieval by vehicle.

Retrieval of the whole carcass by vehicle results in more efficient butchering!

Usually the venison is split between my rellies in SE Queensland and whatever fridge I have to get as much as possible back to Darwin.

When I eventually get a "royal" (6x6) I will definitely take the cape, even if it means leaving the meat!
