I haven't shot my Kodiak Express .58 for many years. I've forgotten how I used to load it. I never went to much trouble. I want to revisit it.

I've started shooting a 0t a BP Pistol club. And as a newbie am learning a lot from watching and talking to the guys. A new experience for me starting as a clueless beginner.

Re the Kodiak rifle. I have the primer caps and the FFG BP I used. I purchased some minie style lead bullets to shoot in it when buying the rifle. They never worked very well.

I think I lubed the minies with Bore Butter. Using my variable measure and loaded them over 80 or 90 grs of FFg.

Did I use a wad? Or a patch? I don't think so.

Now have been told where I probably can purchase some .58 lead balls, so want to see if an accurate shooting load can be worked out.

Should a lubed wad be used over the ball? A patch? The ball lubed? The ball patched and lubed?

Between shots should one push a cap in and out the barrels to clean it, remove any heated debris?

Advice appreciated.

At the BP handgun club, I was told commercial bore butter melts too easily in our summer climate.

A 75:25 or 50:50 blend of beeswax and olive oil is better.

Barisol as a liquid or spray is useful for lubing and cleaning a BP gun after using soapy warm water. Clean with soapy water. Then use barisol. Dirty spots will be exposed. Clean. The barisol will evaporate, leaving behind a protective finish.

Of course snap some caps to ensure the nipples are clean and open before loading.

I cleaned my Kodkak years ago. Lubed it for storage. Hopefully fine.

I think I had a booklet instructing me back then.

Advice appreciated.

Any good shooting black powder ml video links that can be recommended?

Suggestion, use cold tap water for cleaning John. no need for soap.
This was written up by Holland and Holland to a friend of mine who had them "refurbish" a 6 bore SxS caplock ball and shot gun. This info was in a personal letter to him.
Ballistol is water soluble. That should tell you it is not a rust preventative.
Some guys use it for a target patch lube @ 10:1 mix water to Balistol.
Ordinary Neetsfoot oil makes a decent patch lube for hunting.
Remove the nipples, take the barrel off the stock and dip the breech end into a bucket of cool or cold water for cleaning.
Using a jag on a rod, pump water in and out of the tubes, 15 to 20 strokes each bore. This "action" of forcing water into and out of the bores will nicely clean the patent breeches/channels of fouling.
Remove the locks for cleaning. Make sure you clean the inside of the cups on the hammers.
Failure to remove the barrels for cleaning will result in those areas not better cleaned properly.
After drying, I spray WD40 into the tubes, then patch that out. Again, BALISTOL will not prevent rusting. It is water soluble.
Both my brother and fiend Ron rusted their guns overnight when using Balistol for a final 'oiling' after cleaning. The humidity was high both instances.
After drying the gun with patches, lube the bore with a good gun oil. Hoppe's #9 powder solvent is actually a great rust preventative, even better than their gun oil.
My .58 Pedersoli SxS shot best with 100 to 110gr. 2F and a patched ball.
In mine, 100gr. shot both tubes into the same group. 110gr. shot parallel (neatsfoot oil lube, same as a water based lube).
90gr. crossed(diverged) and 120gr. crossed(diverged).
Forgot to mention, .562" pure lead ball and 10 ounce 100% cotton denim (.021") Pure cotton ticking, same thickness will also work well.

My Kodiak shot well with 120 gr 2F and 58 cal patched RB and shot well enough for hunting with a Hornady 525 gr cronical bullets.

For MLs, I remove the barrels from the stock and put a long plastic on the nipples. Hold the barrels (& tubing) vertically, pour hot water down the barrels. Use a patched rod to pump the water out the plastic tube, pouring in more water till the water runs clear.

I shake the water out, spray the bore with WD40 (adsorbs water) and use a hair dryer to dry the barrels.

I then swab the barrels with a good gun oil. I don't use WD40 as a lub or a rust protector because WD40 was formulated as a water displacer (WD).

There was a very good article in DGJ (Vol 1, 2002) about hunting in Africa with a 58 cal Kodiak. I bought my Kodiak after reading that article. I would post the srticle if I knew how to post

It's a pity we can't utilise the old gun rack hooks above the fireplace. An ideal place to dry out a BP gun and keep it dry.

After cleaning, lubing your BP ML, what do you do before using it, loading it? I assume the oil needs a patch put through it to remove any excess oil? Or not needed?

If you can't clean your BP gun straight away, nodes squirting some WD40, bore solvent, gun oil down the barrels, through the nipples, help at all? I suppose it doesn't hurt. What would you do as a minimum? Until proper cleaning can be done.

I always run a couple of dry patches down the barrel of my M-l rifles to clean the bore of oil and then fire a couple of caps off to clean out the flash channels.

At the end of the shooting session I put a folded patch over the nipple and spray some wd down the barrels till I can see the patch soaking up wd. Then run a wd patch down the barrels.

If the humidity is below about 35%, BP fouling will not cause rust.
If the humidity is above 35%, the fouling will absorb moisture from the air.
Follow Ed's post above, on wiping the bore and firing caps on the nipples before loading.
My guns stay dirty until I clean them. I've never rusted a bore & been shooting ML's since 1972.
One thing, never let a hammer down on the breach if the nipples are removed. The main spring will break out the bottom of the lock inlet.
After firing the gun, you need to clean it. Do not put that off until tomorrow.

Any good YouTube videos recommended to
watch zone loading using muzzle loading bp rifles, shotguns and revolvers?

85lc has sent the article to me. I need to edit the images and post them.
