I received my .577 double rifle yesterday. Made by Gustav Richter Breslat. Lots of case color left, bores are great and locks up tight. Chamber cast shows a length of 1.35" bore slug = .585". a cut down .577 case with a little removed about 1/4" in front of the rim fits. The problem that I see is that the inside neck diameter is .595. Going to be hard to fit a bullet in there. The closest that I can find in Handloaders manual of cartridge conversions is a .58 Roberts. Used to convert percussion to centerfire. I don't understand the crown over V on the rib and the total lack of proof marks on the barrel flats.

yes, the Vorratsbeschuß proof mark thats guns get in 1893 when the german proof law came into action. to be clear that was for guns still in the racks of gun dealer to show they were there before the law and don't need the new real proof.
what you have is one of the rare double rifles for lancaster bullet cartridges. lancaster means here lancaster shotgun cartridge or center fire cartridge in contrast to the lefaucheux pinfire shotgun cartridge. the bullet cartridge use a shortened shotgun shell with blackpowder load and a heavy bullet. such guns were outdated in 1893 but some still around. you best way is magtech 24 ga shotgun brass, thats what this gun was made for. common case length was 40 mm but also some in 35, 33 or only 30 mm long. in no way a german gun for the .58 roberts. the bullet was the so called cats head - Katzenkopfgeschoß.

the caliber of your double rifle is 24/33 Lancaster Kugel

weight of the 24 ga bullet was 33,3 gramm, 18,7 mm long it have 3 rings, upper ing measure 15,8 mm, the lower rings measure 15,7mm sometimes called stop ring bullet because the upper ring stop the bullet on the case mouth when loaded with a hand tool.
just cut 24 ga Magtech brass to 33 mm and find a bullet mould. you can also start with a roundball but thats not so easy like the longer cases (40 mm long). the short cases were made for a load without a wad, just powder and bullet like any other rifle cartridge.
btw, nice little double rifle, would like to have it!

Looks like you're going to be busy for a while Casper! Can't wait to see the range report. Would this cartridge use FFFg then due to its straight small case?

Nice purchase Casper, looks in good condition. Looks quite lite as well, it will be interesting to see how it shoots. Well done.

Nice looking rifle. The smallish case is if identified correctly quite rare. If you can get it shooting, a good medium game rifle is my guess.

I'm thinking it might hold around 70 to 80gr. of powder with the short bullet 15.05mm (.5925") for the top band.

Cases are made. I'm having trouble locating .590 diameter bullets.

Casper, I can send a bag of 50 450 grain .590"s if you pm your address. They are solid base with a single grease groove and look to have a very light coat of alox-type lube. I don't remember where I got them but I bought a bunch about 15 years back when I got my snider.
I also have a hollow base mold that is marked .590" but really is about .592" (IIRC, I haven't used it in years) that I think is about 480 grains if you'd like to borrow it.

Small charges from large bores can be very effective and fun. Some years back, my buddy Keith and I did a bunny hunt one March, on snow-shoes for hares. Keith used his .75 Sporting rifle with 45gr. 2F GOEX and I used my .69, with 30gr. 2F GOEX, both of us shooting patched round balls. Due to the low velocity, you could hear the head bones crunching apart from the sound of the gun. The range was usually 30yards or closer. This SxS .577 will be a fun gun for this sort of "plinking". Fun, fun!

Good to see something different
The fore end catch is usually seen on more powerful rifles
But an interesting calibre in its own right
Many thanks for posting and good luck with your shooting

Might hold only 50gr. BP. with a short bullet. I guess we'll find out soon.
