time for weekend entertainment - Smokeless Powder in a Muzzleloader

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en384qVqrug

I was surprised how well the first rifle stands, must have been a high quality muzzle loader barrel.
the second with the tripple load don't had a chance but a new breech loader would not be so different with such a load.

That ML was an inexpensive, 1970's piece of junk to start with. Low quality in all parts.
The weakest part of that gun, would normally be the drum and nipple arrangement. That it held for the second smokeless shot is amazing.

Of course, there would be those who saw this and figured they could load a little less of the H110 and get away with it. Don't do it.

A .45 or .50 side hammer ML gun will withstand a normal charge of black powder, up to about 24,000psi - nominally, which will be produced by shooting a bullet (conical) with up to 90gr. of 2F BP. Round balls, shot with black powder, rarely produce pressures over about 15,000psi in usable/normal top-end loads.

Savage made an "Inline" muzzleloader that was supposed to be able to use smokeless powder. Seems to me, the powder it was meant for was H110, (W296). This is a magnum pistol powder.
The charge was was quite small, iirc, however some people buying those things being rather stupid increased the charge or used different powder and blew them up, then attempted to sue Savage. I don't think they were successful in the suits.

the gun may have been cheap but the steel quality of the barrel was not bad. have seen pics from such "nitro trials" where the barrel rupture from one end to the other in 4-8 stripes.
the last load for the first gun was so you probably go aways with some injuries but alive.

I thought it was interesting that the first rifle survived harsh overloads. Both rifles failed at very high loads, perrhaps modern rifles would have failed at those loads.

I was surprised about the drums, but CVA did a good thing with them, being screwed through the side of the barrel into the breech plug.
Otherwise, as normally done, just into the barrel, it would likely have blown from the BP overload, let alone the 80gr. stricken measure of H110.
I just filled an 80gr.(Scheutzen) 2F measure, with H110 and got 80.4gr.
