I would have really loved to shoot one - unfortunately that we=as never to be thanks to little Johnny Howard - traitorous bastard that he is!
I did have a Winchester M1 Carbine - she was a little beauty!

I carry one on my daily training hikes. Balances beautifully in my hands as I don't use a sling.

In the dead of winter when it's too darn cold to do load development, my Garand gets the call for my weekly shooting sessions.

Thanks for the links.

Good article. I guess note should be made about reloading for an M1 Garand & using only 4895 or 4064 for loading.
Buddy of mine had one and said he bent the piston using IMR 4350 & too stiff a load.

Haven't read the article yet.

It's simple, relatively reliable semi auto rifke with an eight shot magazine in a world of bolt action rifles. A force multiplier.

I like the way detractors said this told the enemy the rifle was empty. Some how I doubt that the ping could be heard above the noise of battel.

Funny, I thought the same thing when I read that.. pretty sure when the shit is deep, that little ping is the last of your worries...

Mass production and a serious need made the M1 great.

I bought one when I was 17, sold it before I was 18. Only jammed my thumb once. I’m a quick learner.

A truly great rifle is the M14. Bought my first at 21 and lost several of them in ‘96.

Bloody great rifle in the bush and on the range. Design, reliability and accuracy made the M14 great.

I had a preference for son-of-Garand myself, but all good

It was an absolute classic. I remember freezing my ass off when I was a teenager taking the CMP class to qualify to buy one with my dad and brother. We ended up sending in for one rifle which we got and it was in terrific shape. That was back in the mid 80s, dad is gone now and I have that rifle in my safe.
