Double Rifle photos, both are solid shooters.
- Mike

W&C Scott .500/.450 3 1/4" NE, made about 1899

Rigby .470NE, class C grade, sold to retailer J.T. Hartwell in January 1919

Both are GREAT!!
I know the market doesn’t seem to like Nitro hammer rifles but I think they are super cool.
Especially with a Jones underlever.

Thanks Ben,
Both would likely have originally gone to, or been intended for India.
The Rigby has a faint 3 digit "Maharaja number" behind the pistol grip.

The Scott shows very little wear and perfect bores/rifling so was probably caught up in the India/Sudan ban on .450's and fired little if at all from ~1899 to the ban. Thereafter maybe just languished in a cabinet because hammer rifles and the .500/.450 3 1/4" had become dated and out of fashion?
I have found that neck expanded and fireformed .500/.416 brass are the easiest and least expensive way to get this .500/.450 shooting.

The Rigby's buyer, J.T. Hartwell, traded as a "Gun and Rifle Maker" at 5a West Chapel Street then all of 5 West Chapel Street, London from 1919 to 1925, the Jones Underlever and hammers on the Rigby are pretty unusual for as late as 1919.

Jack Lott used a hammer(ed) .577 Nitro on cape buffalo. I can still picture, the picture. Seems to me, he was holding a ctg. in his right hand's fingers. (not quite positive on that)

Hi Daryl,
Yep, That picture was in a Jack Lott article in Gun Digest, will have to go look for it. Lott was a huge fan of Jones Underlever Hammer rifles because they can be opened & reloaded quite silently.

I agree.

I could be happy using double rifles with hammers all the time.

Still have to dig out the Gun Digest with that Jack Lott article for Daryl.
Hard to get motivated with freezing & snow ......... detached shop is not heated unless I fire up the wood stove about 2 hours ahead of time.

All 3 of my H&H double hammer rifles (10 bore Paradox, 8 bore ball gun & .500 X 3 1/4" BPE) were almost certainly made by W&C Scott (pre 1892 of their [H&H] new factory)
[If anyone has pics of Phillip Webley rifles of that era please post pics] as they also made H&H guns and rifles
Always the standard for hammer rifles in that era, W&C Scott were pre eminent in that field

The article was called "Make Mine a Side Hammer" by Jack Lott. I have the article, Mike. I forgot about that. It's in a folder on my desk top. Someone from here, sent it to me and I can not remember who it was - some things are just simply - gone!
