After looking at a bunch of different cartridges for my #1-B project I decided on the .405. Bullet variety is great, 210gr .41 Mag bullets for varmints, 265gr cast lead/gas checked bullets for deer, 300gr bullets for big deer (you can really get a 300gr Barnes X cooking in a #1 ) and the lovely 400gr Woodleigh in soft or solid flavor for big critters.

Kick isn't too bad with the up to 300gr bullets, you do know something happened when touching off a 400gr @2,000fps That load will put them into an inch at 100yards too.

And that long lean rimmed cartridge with the annealing band around the mouth just looks right sliding into a single shot.

Hmmmm, depends on the meaning of "greatest." I'll assume you meant most versatile, and by that standard, I think the .30-40 is it.

Being rimmed, it works in most of the classic actions. It's modest standard pressure allows it to work in modern replicas of some of the medium strength actions, such as the rolling blocks; but loaded up, it has enough case to beat the .308, a cartridge well respected for big game hunting. It's long neck and throat allow use of high sectional density bullets (ie. 220 gn), of which there is an excellent selection for it's bore size, including solids.

If the hunting of dangerous game is the figure of greatness, then the .375 Flanged Mag. would be the obvious choice. If the hunting of the meanest and most dangerous game is desired, the .450 NE is the classic.

An aside: I feel an underappreciated case is the .33 WCF. The parent .45-70 brass is available around much of the world, it uses standard .338 bullets, and there is enough case to (when loaded up) make for a magnificent hunting round. The 300 gn Woodleighs (talk about SD!) should go 2150 at pressures around 48,000 CUP, and the 250 gn jobs should go 2350. It could act as a rimmed .318.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On thinking it over again, "greatest" can easily imply "most used" as much as "most versatile" or "most practical." In that case, the .303 and the 9.3x74R would be the "greatest."

The 577-450 is considered to be the first modern big game rifle calibre and with it goes the Martini Henry rifle...

I like the massive old single shots, like the Thomas Bland 4 bore.

500 Grains,what a magnificent example of a 4 bore.
Is it a 2 barrel set and have you fired it ?

Another great thread to visit.

I've been having a good time with the Thompson Center TCR 83
Although not seen as single shot cartridges, the 22-250, the 243, and the 30-06 barrels I have here are great for Western game.

So many choices, as already said....
A rimmed cartridge will be appropriate.

Don´t forget the 7x65R Brenneke

I think that selection should primarily be guided by prospective usage; a single-shot calibre for shooting what: target, light & medium-sized game, heavy game, dangerous game?
I personally own several single-shot rifles: a 6,5x57R that I mainly use for roe deer, a 7x65R that I mainly use for mountain game (because of an extremely flat trajectory with light bullets), and I recently bought a 9,3x74R that I intend to use next year on red deer and maybe one day on brown bear.
As Fuhrmann and Luv2Safari already mentioned it in the above chain of messages, the 7x65R (bullet range from c. 120 to c. 180 grains) and 9,3x74R (bullet range from c. 180 to c. 300 grains) would be prime choices for hunting use.

When I was a young lad we had this old shop in our small town that had all sort of things in it, one being this dusty huge piece of metal that stood well above all the others like an old soldier.
To me the old Martini Henry was (& still is) the grandest old single shot rifle - certainly aren't the prettiest, but always ready to go on a moments notice!

I’ll cast my vote for the 303 British!
Probably the most prolific sporting (and military) round in Africa, Australia, India and North America as far as single shot rifles go.

As far as the greatest dangerous game single shot caliber, generally, it would have to be the 450/400s or the 450 3-1/4” imo.

But we all know the top of the heap is the 461 Gibbs No.2! ;-)

Of course it is, I started it back in 2003! Didn't remember until I went back to the beginning.

Next question was what I said back then.

.22 RF, as a great training and learning tool.

.300 H&H Flanged. Yep still like that one as an idea. I probably suggested it back then thinking economically about what I might be able to afford.

6.5x68R. I still like the idea, but now would probably go for a 7mm Vom Hofe Express in rimmed form of some type. Much more versatile as a mountain hunting cartridge, especially for any larger medium game species.

A .577 NE. I think I did not yet have my Jeffery .450 no.2 yet, and was probably thinking a ss in .577 was possibly affordable.

And 4-bore. About the only choice would be a SS for a 4-bore!

With 16 years of life experiences I would also add the .303 British. Veneable, old, sluggish by modern standards, but still kills like it did in 1900, if not better.

John you are welcome!

I think I saw this thread while Google searching for discussions on large straight case 45 caliber cartridges.
I think that was what I was up to at the time.

I like seeing these older threads brought back to the light.

I think it's obvious - the best single shot rifle cartridge is the one that you have in the hands.

The project that led me here is a single shot pistol, a Thompson Center Contender. The fellow who I work with had handed me a 10" hybrid chambered .410/45 Colt barrel.
This is one of the earlier ones without the rib. I'd been thinking about using some 444 Marlin brass to span the long corridor of throat to get a bullet closer to the rifling leade. The Marlin brass is too short, and I ended up blowing out some 9.3x74r brass to a roughly 45 x 2-7/8" case. I've had to turn the case mouth for .006" neck walls.

The last load fired in there was 61 grains of 3031 with a 300 grain XTP

Brisk, with room for more ass.
Haven't affected the brass at all at this point.
It's ridiculous - absolutely silly, but it's a single shot and it's a hoot and a half.
