Good little hunting film and an amazing head for a free range wild red stag these days. As the hunter says, "largest for him so far."

Thanks for posting.

I was expecting some old vintage converted VW from the comments.

From the angle of the shot, how much lower would one have to aim for that shot? He hit it high in the shoulder as well. I'm not that experienced in high country angled shots like that but have usually managed to hit what I aim at so far.

Great video * a fantastic stag!
Tough country to walk in, very flat here compared to NZ!
Would need to certainly get my fitness up to do that lot.
Feeling buggered already!

Not sure of the range (was it mentioned?) But i personally would be saying " aim just a tad up from the brisket"

I noticed the high shot and thought to myself that although it was a one shot kill I dont think the fella actually allowed for the steepness...not picking just my opinion.
The stag is dead!

btw I had a fella out with me one day that missed a horse of a hind and was shaking his head in disbelief at missing especially when he had shot 1000 pigs in the flat country.
"mate I couldnt have missed etc etc it was as big as a fkn horse,I dont miss easy`s like that"

Well you fkn did mate!

"You shot over her back Doug" After hearing that he hadnt adjusted for the angle)

He had no knowledge of shooting down a steep hill..he does now as I gave him the full wrap there and then ha ha.

Agree 100%... NOTHING like backpacking in, setting up camp and hunting...

Shooting behind a fence is complete BS in my opinion and in no way reflects hunting...don't care how big of an area it is..you still know they are in there somewhere... each to their own, but not for me...

Thx for posting..really video..

I know you like to get out into the wild Art,you may like this video as well,it does include a chopper lift but there is plenty required after the drop off.

Bloody Kiwi accent maybe a bit different for you though LOL>

Good video, and that is how it is done here, insulation tape over the end of the barrel, bipod nowadays, plenty of blood over the clothes from carrying your own meat out. Good East Coast or Southland hunting country.
That is the classic high shoulder or brisket shot if the animal was facing, not the low lung heart where so many aim and then the animals runs. Okay in that open country but not in steep mountain or bush country.
Some nice chamois too.

Shanks has me back there again next year as long as I can get over the physical wrongs of the current time.
It will involve a chopper lift too as I`n too stuffed to do those 10 hour climbs anymore.
Its the sort of country you would love Art.

You need a video for some of your own hunts Art

There actually is some around somewhere..during my Zim hunt in 2008,long time ago I know, I was hunting with the late Ian Gibson..they filmed the entire hunt for the tv show TRACKS ACROSS AFRICA..There was 2 episodes shown ...

I think I still have copies of that dvd somewhere- 12 days in the Zambezi Valley--although I was actually there 16...

Its a great way to go back and remember a trip..show your family , things like that..the scenery is usually incredible..

Have 2 trips coming up--will see if I can take a small video along..but usually I like to just enjoy the moment..filming by myself seems to take some of that away..maybe I'm just a bit greedy with my own time..

This bloke can be a bit heavy on the "good Kiwi joker" routine for my liking (he's a North Islander) but the video, which has some amusing bits, will give you a pretty good idea what to expect foot hunting for Thar. The Landsbrough Valley is situated along the main divide between the Mt Cook and Mt Aspiring national parks. Not somewhere you'd want to go if you don't like heights. You don't have to go this extreme to be successful but if you want there's plenty of this sort of stuff out there.
