What's a good action out there to build a 318 on? I've seen some 1909,s there's a pile of vz24s floating around.

A VZ98 would be good - pre-WW11, I'd think.
A 1950's Model 98 would also be good.
1909 to 1912, also.
An Interarms Mark 10 Mauser or Parker Hale 98 would also be a good one.
I'd build on any of those. The Mark 10 and Parker Hale would be easiest as already commercial.

See if you can pick up a clean Husqvarna 146 action from Simpson Ltd.(Pick one that hasn't been drilled).
Classic pre-war commercial FN large ring Mauser 98 action. Highest quality and period correct. Best bang for the buck.

I rather like the idea of building one on a small-ring action. I keep running across old sporterized K98a's, and thinking they would make a nice little walking-around rifle.

To Joel Dorleac. I am not a master gun maker so my opinion may have little weight but as a collector and student of fine Mauser sporting rifles and having admired Hollands,Rigbys, Westley Richards, Jeffreys,as well as a multitude of other classic arms over 45 yrs, I have to say that your work is superior in that it elevates form and function to an art form. Ralf Martini makes beautiful rifles but the details of the machining and the perfection in the lines of your stocks approaches true perfection. Thank you for sharing them with us and for your contribution in keeping this art form alive. Respect.

The FN action rifles sold by Sears and Montgomery Ward in caliber .270 and .30-'06 should be ideal for conversion to .318WR and require no magazine alteration. That's what I used for mine.

Thanks Daryl. They are really great guns and they handle well. Especially the 146 with its heavier barrel than the 640. Modern FZH Mauser 98 actions alone cost $3500 USD. So the FN is a sweet deal at 10% of that price.
Xausa, Max COL for .318 is 3.35"(with solids), standard 146 mag is 3.31". A quick pass with an end mill will thin out the rear of the mag wall but this is not necessary unless you use solids which are useless for hunting. The 250gr softpoints made by Woodleigh are 1.302" long compared to 1.419" for solids. Swaged .333 softpoints will also fit in standard mag with no mods.
The 8mm Mauser with full loads and 250gr Woodleighs will duplicate .318 ballistics and hard to distinguish the two without looking at the headstamp.

Ha ha, interesting always to see historical propaganda and PR BS. But maybe they are 'extending' it a little, by suggesting the "new rifle" is the "Mauser .318 Accelerated Express Magazine Rifle" ...  Never know though, what some makers thought of how gullible the market was ...
Still happens today. How magnum belts on cartridges suddenly became, "must not have's" on any firearm to be used for any sort of hunting if one did not want sudden malfunctions ... after people used magnum belts for probably 80 years ...
Or the "need" for short fat flat sharp shouldered cartridges ...

Beautiful rifles as far as the husqavarnas Simpson has most are drilled for a side mount I assume a griffin and Howe which is not a deal breaker but the mount go for what the gun is

Some of the Husky's rifles that tradeexcanada gets have the side mounts with the rifle, or are plain or are drilled and tapped for them. Those with side mounts usually have the 4X Pecar scope mounted.
They are/were made by Husqvarna as far as I now.

Two details to notice; PECAR Berlin is/was german trademark, went out of business in 2006. Some of those swedish sidemounts are made from aluminium so it's usefull to check before buying.

A phone call to Anthony at tradeexcanada would solve that, I assume. Too bad they don't export outside of Canada.
Many also have Aimpoint Scopes. Appears those are/were popular in Sweden.

AIMPOINT is Swedish trade mark, quite popular here in Finland too. Those older versions haven't any magnification which is good thig when hunting moose at small distances.

Here is a link to Tradex that shows what Husqvarna M98 made by FN they have. Many are drilled for top mounts, side mounts or both. I bought a total of 7 for me and my friends that had not been drilled and tapped. I also bought a properly drilled, for top mount, mod. 640, 9.3x62, with swept back bolt handle on which we fitted a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36.Will take it to the range soon.

You can also search for FN98 but the FN action does not have the thumb cut on the left wall or the hump with the stripper clip guides found on the original period rifles. Unfortunately Tradex has recently stopped exporting to the US market. Keep checking Simpsons as new stock arrives.
Husqvarna 640 (1947) has thumb cut , hump and low swept back bolt handle of the Deluxe.
146 (1939) next to 640 (1948) transitional with hump but no thumb cut. Smooth as glass.

In the truck business they say you can't shop a used truck.looking at the ones Simpson has a couple are drilled one is not and one still has the mount I think most have cracked stocks of course the one undrilled has a crack and the one drilled on the side and top doesn't one prewar and the other fiftys and sixties.not trying to make a fake just a ice piece to shoot.ones 9x57 with a fair barrel the rest are 3006 with nice barrels can't rebore the bad only the good 06 one.but I need to research if the 318 reamer would clean up in a rebored 06.im guessing not.

The model 46's, (96 actions in 9.3x57) are a good buy. The one I sold to my brother would put everything from 232gr. Norma and resized 225 Hornady and 235 Speer on up to 293gf. tugs, and resized 300gr. Hornady RN's into separate 1" groups or better, at 100meters.
It actually made 1920's era 9.3x62 ballistics - only with 300gr., not the lighter 286's.(2,175fps)

Ducmarc, In your original post you said you were looking for an action to build a .318.
You cannot rebore an '06 because the chamber is too large but you can rebore an 8x57 and rechamber to .318 WR if you must have that caliber.
Seems like the supply of 146s is running out. Simpson used to have over 30 in stock and so did Tradex.
Now they have a handful and in poor condition.
You may consider this action marked Belgium but made in China and used by Dumoulin.
