7x64 Brenneke Custom Mauser
      #279472 - 18/03/16 05:13 AM

I am looking for info on my Brenneke 7x64. Is this a special order? Any idea of value? Please let me know what you think. The scope is an old Hensoldt variable and the mounts do not appear original. My email is j_delmer@yahoo.com for any questions

Stunning rifle it looks as original Brenneke rifle, all parts look to have the same serial number but i have a doubt the scope and its Mount aren't original?
Ps. Waiting for Lancaster and Kudae opinions

Certainly a nice rifle.

Wilhelm Brenneke's lifetime achievements are described in a 7-page article in the 1960 Gun Digest. These include the design of the 7x64 Brenneke cartridge.

Also, I presume that large side button visible is the hinged floor plate release he also invented. The item marked "Kammergriff verriegelung" is another invention, to hold the bolt in position to prevent it being inadvertently raised, (Kammergriff means bolt handle and verriegelung means bolt lock).

Yet another invention pressed against the lengthened cartridge extractor as it moved rearward. This did away with the looseness of the bolt, eliminating clatter and rattling as it is moved back and forth.

I don't know the value of the rifle, but it stands out from other unmodified Mausers of this period. I would think it quite desirable by collectors of this era.

This rifle seems to have some tecnical details which Brenneke has patented so I think it's original Brenneke. But when talking about scope and mounts my opinion is same with Itkid.

Just had another look; the item marked Magazindeckel Verschluss in the photo means a magazine cover lock, so it is as suspected:

"Brenneke designed a well-checkered sliding button of generous size, operating alongside the guard, and easy to use, even with gloves on"

you may need a step ladder to get your cheek high enough to look through that scope!

Great rifle and great calibre too.

Brennecke Rifles were made by Emil Schmidt & A. I. Habermann in Suhl
http://www.jagdwaffensammler.de/drilling-schmidt-habermann/eschmidt-habermann.html

and I believe this one came also from ESAH

yes, the scope is new on this old rifle but a clean work.
imho, nice and original Brennecke rifle.

You really need to get rid of that scope mount, which spoils the looks of an otherwise flawless Brenneke rifle. A quick trip to New England Custom Guns would restore the scope mount to its original condition.

As lancaster wrote, your rifle was made for Brenneke by Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl. tm ESHA, like all pre-war "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" bolt action rifles. ESHA built the rifle to Brenneke's order on a WW1 Kar 98AZ "carbine" small ring action, as shown by the shape of the recoil lug. The rifle was proofed 1032 = October 1932. ESHA incorporated several Brenneke design features: The closed, welded up "thumbhole" of the left receiver wall (Mauser made such actions only later, after Brenneke made this feature popular), the DRGM protected bolt handle lock with a plunger riding on the extractor and the unusual magazine cover lock. Schmidt & Habermann was a major Suhl gunmaker. As they were predominantly gunmakers to the trade, the name is relatively unknown, as their guns are most often marked by other gunmakers, "name" ones like Brenneke or Barilla as well as countless country gunmakers.
Even if you don't find the small "esha" Schmidt & Habermann, Suhl, trademark in a hidden place on the "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" rifles, the distinctive rear sight base with the ESHA serial number is a giveaway. Here are some photos of such rear sight bases and ESHA numbers: # 38695 and 40764 (with the GS mark too. Opened up to 7x57 and reproofed February 1965) are on Schmidt & Habermann M21 short, small ring actions. # 39299 and 41750 are on "Original Wilhelm Brenneke, Leipzig" rifles, as is 42921 on your rifle. (BTW, my Schmidt & Habermann o/u combination in 16 and 9.2x53R Swiss is # 41481 and proofed in 7/27 = July 1927.)

I agree with Xausa for the story and the charm of the rifle, remove that mount and restore the rifle or find a more coeval mounting solution
