Safari Arms LTD Ammo.
I have an original 1930ish 10.75x68 Mauser. I purchased a box of ammo from Safari Arms LTD and the cartridges will not chamber. I was told that there is a difference is specs between SAAMI and CIP. The Safari Arms LTD is too long for my chamber.

No, by the time I got the ammo I was reloading my own. I do have a relatively short chamber and all the cases I purchased have the same problem. I resize the cases before using and they chamber without a problem.

I had the rifle restored by Dave Norin. His shop is located in northern Illinois on the Wisconsin border in the village of Antioch.

I had him replace the butt plate which was broken, add an internal cross bolt and re-cut the front sight dovetail to use standard front sights which allows me to change POI by changing the front sight.

No the 10.75x68 has a case unique to the cartridge with a rim of 12.41mm and base of 12.45mm as opposed to the 8x68S with a 13.00mm rim and 13.30mm base.

That's not as easy as you may think. Merely rechambering is not sufficient. You have to open up the bolt face too. Further, the Mauser, Oberndorf Commercial 10.75x68 action and magazine must be opened up to work with the longer and fatter .404 cartridge. The 10.75x68 has a CIP max cartridge over all length of 81 mm = 3.19", Mauser mags for this cartridge had an inside length of 84 mm = 3.3". This is insufficient for the .404 with it's max oal of 89.76 mm = 3.53". Mauser .404 magazines on their Magnum actions were 92 mm = 3.62" long.

True but can be done easily enough and is a relatively common alteration on a standard M98 action.

My own Oberndorf Mauser which was a 10.75x68 originally has been opened up for the .404 Jeffery cartridge.

I would not do this now or recommend it with the availability of ammo and loading components for the 10.75x68, there is no earthly need to do so. The .423" Mauser as it was more commonly known was a popular cartridge in the heyday of Africa and India hunting but was only let down in performance at times by the poor bullets. But then so too were many cartridges of that era especially with the nickel jacketed type that often riveted and broke up.

kuduae if you really want or need a .404 go for it but I strongly recommend leaving your rifle original and focus on getting a good supply of reloading components for it including a bullet mould. cast bullets let you shoot a lot without the wear and tear on the barrel and cases last a long time especially if annealed regularly. The 10.75x68 will do everything you want of it.

Yes I was thinking of rechambering one, but It was just a thought. I'd love to keep the original chamfering if at all possible.

eagle 27, not kuduae, but Gundog01 thinks about rechambering a 10.75x68 to .404.I don't need or want a .404, especially not on an opened up standard length action. I have a Mauser in an even more exotic chambering, 10.75x63, forerunner of the x68. And I have a very satisfactory rifle on a ZKK action in .416 Rigby, besides many more, so I feel no earthly need for a .404.

Your 10.75x63 would be quite rare, I recall shooting my friends one at a range in Germany, can't recall the rifle but do recall we were having issues with hangfires with the loading he was trying out but I'm short on the powder and bullet details too. I shot so many different cartridges in firearms that two of my good friends owned that I lost track of which was which and back then they were all mostly exotic cartridges that I hadn't heard of before.
It was my friend with the 10.75x63 who gave me a quantity of RWS 347gr soft point bullets and a couple of boxes of new RWS .404 Jeffery cases for my .404.

I remember importing a good bunch of RWS 401gr FMJ bullets for my .404 back in the late 70's and they all arrived in those flimsy round plastic green boxes, many cracked and broken open with more than a few bullets loose in the wrapped up packet which itself had developed a small hole where a bullet was protruding. The lady in the post office (her husband was a hunter) was very intrigued, pulling a bullet free from the package to inquire what I would be using them on.
Fortunately all the bullets I ordered were accounted for in the package.

Interestingly your RWS FMJ bullets are stamped on the base with the RWS shield, mine were not. I don't see any of these 347grainers in your collection?
