Refinish
      #266424 - 15/06/15 05:29 AM

Almost done with my refinish of the .318 WR. Just arrived back from being polished and reblued. Stock is fit. Last thing will be having it checkered. Some photos of the shape it was in when I acquired it and some after.

Casper, must have cost an arm & leg, but boy it certain would have been worth ever penny; it certainly is a beauty now!
Lovely to see new life come back into an old piece, & the timber is fantastic
Cheers

IMO it's quite seldom to see original Mauser rear sight in that kind of take-down rifle. Have you any foto of rifles proof marks ?

Beautiful rifle, caliber & restore, the engraving & style look to be European/Belgian-German some how to me ?

Nice job.
Is the rear stock a newly made one ?
What about the steel butplate ?
The half octagonal Krupp steel barrel appears to be from German origin, is it signed W-R ?

Best.

Not signed by anyone. But I'd guess German also. It has "made expressly for fereday & sons Salibury" on it. (see photo). I'll post some photos of the proofmarks this morning when I get home from work. The whole stock is new. When I bought it, it didn't have a buttplate and the original stock had a lot of really soft wood at the butt.

chambered for .318 westley richards. I've fired it before the resto began. Quite a difference between .318 and .330.

Casper, you might possibly remember the Oberndorf actioned Westley Richards I bought from you some years ago. It was in pretty rough condition, with a shortened barrel, disproportionately high front sight, modified rear sight and numerous scratches and dings in the stock. The fore end tip was hanging on by a thread. The original bore, caliber 8X57IS, was pretty rough as well.

I had it rebored and rechambered to 9X57 and sent it to Lon Paul for reworking. Here are some "before" and "after" photos, prior to bluing. Lon is still recovering from the fire which destroyed his workshop and it has slowed his delivery time considerably.

The finished rifle will be equipped with a Lyman 35 rear sight.

Looking good. I regret selling that one, but, I regret selling quite a few rifles over the years.

It should be Fereday & sons, Salisbury. This company still exists in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Action is old military one made by Pieper, Belgium. If serial number is Mauser factory one, rifle has been made year 1908. Same year there exists at least two other .318 W&R caliber Mauser rifles, one made by mauser and another, take-down by W&R.

I haven't compared the 338-06 to the .318 but seems to me that they should be real close.

Could be closer, however the factory .318 is listed as 48,000psi and factory ammo, IIRC - 2,400fps with a 250gr.

The .338/06 standard, not imp. by A-Square is now listed in SAAMI and the max. working pressure is listed as 63,000PSI - 2,000psi less than a .270 Winchester for some reason not known.

The .338/06 will drive a 250gr. at 2,500fps - I've seen listed as high as 2,600fps, which is only 100fps slower than a .358 Norma Mag. Must be a FAST 26" bl.

The Ack. IMP version easily makes that and a bit more, especially if the neck is shortened by .050" to 1/10".

I bought the stock blank off of ebay for $80. As part trade for a rifle someone wanted from me I had him duplicate the old stock. I fit it and finished it. The bluing cost me $250 for deluxe polish and blue. I paid about $400 for the rifle 6 years ago.
