8x60 barrel info

Hello guys! New poster here looking for some info on a barrel I purchased awhile back. Thought I was buying an 8x57 barrel for a possible rebore idea. I looked at it a little more closely and saw a 60 stamped on the bottom. To my delight an 8x60 cartridge from my collection fit perfectly! I'm curious as to what the other markings might mean and since I don't have the Speed book or anything that would tell me, I thought I would inquire here. It is 22.6 inches long with front claw mount and light engraving on thin shoulder. Left side reads A. Plett Frankfort A/M. Bottom has R,G, and U proofs which I think I understand. Also has Krupp-Stahl and S.T.mG N 12gr. which I figured out. What I'm most curious about is a symbol that is a T that is also an F overlaid with a C. Sorry no pictures. There is a 7.8mm bore stamp, (I do get a .323 slug measurement). There is the 60 and two dates, 3/27 and a 12/25 below that. Why? There is a script WK, Wilhelm Kleber? Upon closer examination there is a smaller 4 inside the 0 of the 60. Sorry for the length of this. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words! What can you tell about my barrel? Since it has a nice bore I would like to screw it to a suitable action and stock it in a European style. Thanks in advance!

Proof marks should ne BUG, 7,8 indicates that barrel is made for .318 bullets. So it seems that yours caliber is 8x60I, this is between-wars caliber. So make a chamfer cast and slug the bore, then you will see....by the way, could this engraved name be A. Plett, Frankfurt a/M (= Frankfurt am Main)?

The rifle originally with your barrel was retailed by Alfred Plett, Neue Mainzer Str. 77, Frankfurt am Main, but he did not make barrel or rifle. The original rifle was made for him by the shop of Christoph Friedrich Triebel, Grosse Backstr. 14, Suhl, a well known gunmaker to the trade. Triebel used a barrel made by Wilhelm Kelber, Beiersgrund 3, Suhl. As the two proofdates and the crown/R = repair proofmark show, it was altered, rechambered?, soon. Maybe rechambered from 8x60 to 8x64 Brenneke? An 8x60 cartridge would also slip into an 8x64 chamber and seem to fit. So a chamber cast is necessary before you buy ammo or reloading dies. 8x64 brass is easy to make: Neck up 7x64 cases.Load data is availble for both cartridges or you may use 8mm-06 data for the 8x64.

Very interesting history and good info! Thanks guys. The 8x64 idea is an interesting one that I will check into when my Cerrosafe arrives. It does look however though that the "4" is much fainter and quite likely over stamped by the "60". Is it not possible to have a .323 groove with 7.8mm bore? Would an "S" be covered by scope mount, or have been on the receiver? Every measurement I do on the slug and the muzzle shows .323 give or take .001. Will do one on chamber cast also. So, what type of receiver and stock might have been used on such a rifle originally? Thanks again!

With the right sized cases, if a .323" bullet seated in the brass easily chambers, it should be OK. Best to first test with a light load using a moderate burning powder - from a book loading- say, for instance a starting load with something like H4895, a powder than can be reduced to 60% of a full load, without giving ANY problems.

Thank you to everyone! That was what I was hoping to learn. My barrel has a story to tell! I hope someday to put it back to work in clothes it was familiar with.

For those still curious, I made the chamber cast today and it did come up as an 8x60. The casting measured .322 well into the rifled area ahead of the chamber. Should be a fun project when its turn comes!
