Double hammers and nipples on one barrel - definitely weird when not superposed loads ie:one in front of the other

maybe the most unusual 19 century sporting gun I have ever seen

google translator "SELL RARITY COLLECTOR CARABINER - Serial Number 35. Smooth brown barrel, in the area of the chamber okragonal, then cylindrical, caliber 10.5 mm. Lower part of the barrel with a test mark (St.Etienne). Smooth percussion lock with flap lock, opening lever on the right side of the frame. Removable shoulder rest and grip grips made of walnut wood. France 1856-1869, length with shoulder rest 82 cm. Probably EXPERIMENTAL MODEL"

This last gun is a swivel breech gun, not a true O/U & it's a beauty. The trigger guard is the locking lever. Pull back on the front of the guard to unlatch, then turn the barrels so the "lower" barrel's nipple comes under the hammer.

14.5mm - .57 cal. interesting. It would shoot a 27 or 26 bore ball, weighing 259gr. to 269gr.
In my post above, I should have noted, first to pull the hammer back to 1/2 bent, then pull on the front of the T-guard to unlock the barrels.

Re: muzzle loader at auction [Re: lancaster]
      #343396 - 20/07/20 01:52 AM

Nice, but very plain and quite utilitarian. Except for the rear tang sight, very militaristic.
With that aperture sight being mounted in the wood and not attached to a longer tang, tells me the gun was given that sight by a sportsman after it was made.
Calibre roughly .63".
Quite likely, it has a Tige or Delvinge-type chamber.
Tige is a flat topped spike running up the centre of the bore mounted in the middle of the breech-plug, the length determined by the amount of powder used in the issue paper ctg. Likely a bullet & solid at this date.
Delvinge chamber has a powder recess in a smaller "than the bore" breech. This powder chamber accepts the powder charge. Slamming (throwing)the loading rod 3 times on the undersize bullet upsets the bullet into the rifling, in both designs
rather than having the progressive depth rifling and use of a hollow based slug, like other Euro and American countries used.
Austrian military guns used these two interesting "principals".
This use of these two systems is possible, but not positive. The gun may have been designed for hollow based "Minie-type" "balls" as well.

Very nice stalking rifle. The second one is really weird, being contained and leather washer-ed, by the looks of it.

* C.G. BALES, DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA

A RARE 4-BORE PERCUSSION RIFLED SHOT & BALL GUN FOR DANGEROUS GAME, serial no. P3036,
circa 1870, with round 32 3/4in. barrel signed 'C.G. BALES D'URBAN', applied fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding leaves, South African registration number stamped at breech, plain colour hardened double screwed top-tang, plain colour hardened bar-action lock stamped 'C.G. BALES D'URBAN', chequered walnut full-stock, iron furniture, twin barrel keys and provision for ramrod (absent along with front stirrup swivel), much finish remaining beneath an old applied lacquer, overall length 49 1/2in., weight approximately 12 1/2lbs.

Other Notes: The Port of Natal was renamed D'urban in 1835 in honour of Lt. Gen. Benjamin D'urban who was a favoured Governor of the settlers in the region. The spelling with the apostrophe continued in use until the Boer Wars, upon which it was dropped and the more recognisable 'Durban' spelling adopted.

C.G. Bales is a seldom encountered gun maker and retailer who first appeared at 26 Field Street, D'urban in 1869. By 1874 he had a store at Pietermaritzburg as well, but all advertisements for him cease by 1879. He is last mentioned in 1884 as a 'Gentleman residing in Berea'; an upmarket exclusive area of Durban. This type of percussion rifle was the favoured tool of rhinoceros hunters of the time; short and light enough to be carried distances on horse-back but packing a powerful punch, and through convenience persisted well into the cartridge era.
