Hollis 12bore rifle - Test results!
      #249673 - 29/06/14 07:38 AM

Well the old girl can still shoot!

This was at 50 yards, left and right barrels respectively, hold was 6o'clock under both the 'EE' letters on the box. The load was standard B&P #9 trap loads trimmed to 2.5" and PP wad with petals cut above the second seal topped with a 1/8" card wad topped with 1/2" home-made dry felt wad and topped with another 1/8" card wad and finally the 680grain CBE Paradox hollowpoint slug lubed and sized to .733". I havent chrono'd this one yet but this load put smiles on many faces that day!

Dragged this 5-litre empty aluminium can out to 75 yards and let drive at it offhand! These are the entry holes, the can was filled with water halfway and the first slug hit just above the water level making a clean hole at both ends!

The second slug?? Well, lets just say that it had a bit of an argument with the aluminium!!

Loading up a small batch of HP's and the full-bore Lyman Sabots

wad stack for the HP slug

The full-bore Lyman, these weigh 660grains, and I'm yet to try them out!

Felt wad seems to be working well, thankfully. Took a while to get these to come out at the right size!

Home-made crimping tool does a decent job on both types of slugs

another DIY contraption, this hull vise works great and costs peanuts to make yourself! All you need is a small toggle clamp, like the one shown, an 8"x2" aluminium plate 3/8" thick and a 2"x2" aluminium block with a 0.858" hole bored through, I will post details on how to make this in another thread!

Nice! How do the pointed slugs work at say 75 yards?

I had problems with sabot slugs tumbling out of my 30-30 20g over and under.

Very good results, impressive accuracy. Well done with loading them youself.

I'm impressed!-- Where these "full bore" Lyman slugs from a modified (rebored) Lyman mould? the ones I have are undersized, fit normal shot cups and weigh 525gr. in pure lead, 506gr. in WW metal.

z375,
with your roll crimper that you have in your drill press can you also give us a diagram or dimensions of it please? Also what speed do you rotate the drill to get such a perfect crimp & lastly how many reloads do you get from you hulls if any?
Regards

The Paradox slugs come into their own past 50 and the can was put up at 75. I'd like to try these at a 100 yards but that will have to wait until the weekend

Daryl,

This was custom-made out of a chunk of OHNS steel and first roughed out on a VMC and then final dimensions were done on an EDM setup, it throws slugs without any hangups and they drop at .735" and weigh 660gr in pure lead, havent tried WW alloy so dont know the weight they will drop at. I had this crazy idea thanks to a member on the CastBoolits forum (Turbo1889) he had posted various scaled up drawings of the Lyman Sabot Slug in a 12ga, 16ga, 10ga and so on. I had always wanted a slug that would be pretty devastating within 100yards and I think this hunk of lead is just the ticket, the driving bands were designed to be parallel, which means you can load this one the other way around too and that will get any hog's attention!!

I was supposed to send a few of these to David Commens for him to try out in his Greener bore gun, I will get around to doing that soon enough.

This is the thread http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?189654-Full-bore-Lyman-Sabot-slug-mold!!

9.3,

This is not my own design, I had a plastic BPI roll crimper which got buggered eventually luckily before it died I had a friend who makes precision die components make one for me in stainless steel with a few changes,it has two concave teeth diagonally opposite each other which was done on an EDM. I will ask him for the drawing and post it here for anyone who wishes to make one, works very well on both plastic and paper and makes a nice, tight and uniform crimp, I did have to break it in a bit with some Colgate toothpowder and light machine oil and a few dozen fired plastic hulls as occasionally it would grab the plastic when it was new, it doesn't happen anymore. I also managed to win an auction for a Lyman 12ga roll crimper for shot and RB loads, it does a beautiful job on paper and plastic.
