My Danzig "factory" sporter arrived yesterday. Bought it on a whim practically sight on seen - the price was right. I'm pleased except for the fact someone removed the DSTs but I suspected this prior to my purchase.
Small ring standard length action with what I believe to have LR barrel threads. Cal. 8x57 using a military stepped barrel with one solid and one flip up leaf rear sight. Germanic stock with rounded pistol grip, small schable on fore end, side panels and cheek piece.
I understand they are rather rare so it's a good cleaning and into the "shooting" collection. Hopefully eventually I'll happen upon a set of DSTs to put it right. --- John

Looks like a good piece for a bit of sprucing up.
Looking forward to seeing it when you're done with it and maybe reading about some of you're adventures with it.

Thank you Lancaster for posting the pics. Matt the sprucing up has begun - I took the gun apart for cleaning etc., no rust but the bore is ---- well ugly! however I have a very good duplicate in the parts bin to replace it. Hopefully I will run across some DSTs but no panic to do so.
The stock is good with no cracks, so a refinish, a checkering touch up, fix that fore-end chip and it will be good to go. --- John

These "Gewehrfabrik Danzig" sporters are rather scarce, as they were made for a short time only. When WW1 ended November 1918, the German government arsenals, among them the Königlich Preussische Gewehrfabrik Danzig, tried to convert to civilian production, to save as many jobs as possible. Just as Remington did when they introduced their M30 series rifles, made on their Enfield P14 – M17 production line, the German factories made these sporting rifles. Additionally, the Gewehrfabrik Danzig offered some simple .22lr rifles. Apparently most of these “Gewehrfabrik Danzig” sporters were exported then, as they are very rare in Germany. Alas, in 1919 very few Germans had enough money to afford a new sporting rifle. After the so-called “Versailles Peace Treaty” came into force in 1920, the Danzig arms factory was dismantled by the allied disarmament commissions, as were the other government arsenals at Erfurt, Spandau and Amberg. So these “Gewehrfabrik Danzig” marked rifles were made during 1919 and a few months of 1920 only.

Those DWM sporters are another story. In those innocent pre-WW1 days it was a common practice to include some sporting rifles in the military calibers into each shipment of military rifles to foreign countries, meant as gifts/bribes to the friendly decision makers. Mauser used their army type C rifles for these purposes, but DWM was without an own commercial production. So they had their "present/promotion" rifles either made up by independent Suhl or Zella-Mehlis gunmakers, apparently sometimes even using pre-shaped stocks by the DWM subsidiary Mauser. Especially famous are the 7x57 "Plesier" sporting rifles on M93 actions with long, octagonal barrels, sent to the Boers in South Africa with the shipments of Military M95 rifles. South American countries of course expected the same friendly treatment, sometimes even mentioning the number of sporters to be included in the military rifle contracts.

You have to look for a Mauser marked RwE on the receiver wall, as the Gewehrfabrik Erfurt was renamed "Reichswerke Erfurt" in early 1919.

Here, in Argentina, around the turn of the 19th century, this DWM sporters were sold in the gunshops. I saw only ONE exactly like mine, 200 numbers apart, in www.collectiblefirearms.com some years ago. That one had factory double triggers. Like the M98 my friend has.

If you're on a computer right click the image and go "Copy Image URL".
Then in the reply options you'll see a section called "Instant UBB Code". Top right is "Image", click that then hit paste for your image URL in this (dont double up on the HTTP though!)

Chapmen; Thank you for posting the trigger pics. A kind gentleman has offered to give me a set of DSTs, When they get here we'll see how they work out.
I see the knurled bolt knob must be a standard feature. I have a request - could you provide a pic. of the butt-plate, mine is rather plain, yours has some horizontal lines on it. --- John

A lot of information came out. We / I have been enlightened about the factory sporters out of
Danzig, Erfurt, Amberg, DWM. I however have a question - did Spandau produce any sporters in the same time period as the others? --- John
