Nunavut Polar Bears

I just heard today that the quota has been increased by 150 bears for the Nunavut Territory polar bear harvest.

Some of this I understand will be open to guided hunts, but most of course to the local Inuit.

I wish you well, anyone heading up there for this. I would like to go just to see some of the area at least, have not seen that part of Canada yet.

Sounds like a good hunt to take along a 500 BPE double.

I have been told not to eat the liver and other internal organs, and when I think about it, I would leave all the meat to whomever wanted it. Supposedly the amount of toxins in the bears is incredible, being at the top of the food chain. I would be happy if I am wrong.

hmmm, I am not sure about that. I suspect it varies depending on the bears location. I would think the meat would be quite good eating on many of them, I have never taken to organ meat, have tried to but just can't get a taste for it anyway.

The locals would be the ones to check with on that.

The Polar Bear, Seal etc, livers are very rich in vitaminA.That being a fat soluble vitamin, it's very difficult for our bodies to excrete.Vitamins like B and C are easily egested as they are water soluble.At high doses, the fat soluble vitamins are higly toxic and can result in death if taken in excess.But, the native people and animals have inbuilt immunities against these.Call it natural adaptation.What would kill a normal dog, the Tundra dogs happily thrive on them.Same with the Masais of Africa.Despite their high protien food, their resistance to cholestrol is high.

Another potential problem faced by those who eat polar bear meat, is the ingestion of drug which becomes stored in the flesh of bears which have been tranquilized. Some bears are drugged numerous times in a season in the Churchill area, and this is the same population of bears harvested by the Nunavut Inuit.
