NEF Pardner single shot 12 gauge
      #238190 - 22/11/13 11:21 AM

Back in June my 3 children purchased the gun mentioned in the subject line. It is a smoothbore with rifle sights.
My son and I had seen this gun at a local gunshop earlier in the summer and I commented that it might make a fun roundball gun for deer hunting. I put it back and we went home.
After a couple of days I went back to buy it and found that it had been sold. Didn't think much about it until Fathers day arrived and it was presented to me by the kids!
So I started seaching out load information right here on Nitro Express, read and re read posts by Daryl_S and Yogi000, played around with loads, and have found that at 50 yards this gun can easily make 3 inch, 5 shot groups. Good enough for the deer hunting I do in Iowa where only shotguns are allowed.
My load is a .678" ball cast from 20-1 lead tin alloy, Winchester AA case, Winchester 209 primer, 23.5 grains of Alliant "Unique", a Winchester WAA12 wad with the petals cut back to just above the centerline of the ball and a standard 8 point fold crimp.
December 7th is the start of deer season here and with any luck at all I will be posting pictures.

Sounds great Matt - best of all, it is working for you quite well. Best of luck hunting. I've just picked up a pound of Hodgdon's LongShot and AA Steel powders for improved ballistics in my own 12 bore rifle.

Daryl,
I have tried Longshot and it shows a lot of promise. Same Winchester components as the original post but used 32 grains of Longshot. This load is shown in the Hodgdon website for 1 1/8 oz of shot giving a velocity of 1420 fps.
I'm just running out of time before deer season begins to do more testing.
I did try blackpowder loads, 120 grains of Swiss 3F with card/fiber wads and the inverted gas seal under the ball. In a gun that weighs less than 7 pounds the recoil is quite noticeable.

The heavier black powder loads can 'wear' on you, for sure. About any black powder load produces almost double the recoil of a smokeless load.

I noticed that with the 7 dram loads, 190gr., producing 1,550fps with the 14 bore round ball I used. The same speed could be reached easily with smokeless powder, with what felt like less than 1/2 the recoil.

That 7 dram charge was the 'heaviest' charger used in a 2 3/4" case, I believe. It is listed as the heaviest load in Greener's book.

We now know the HEAVIEST 12 bore load was 9 drams - meant for specially made heavy guns and 3" hulls. Peter, of this site, has one of those, I think - IIRC.

Iowa deer season started yesterday. It was a balmy -12 degrees Fahrenheit with a light breeze making the windchill around -20 degrees. Spent all day out without having a deer in range.
Went back out this morning. It was snowing and an improved temp of 0 degrees.
Got myself a nice doe with one roundball loaded as described above.
At 40 yards the ball went in through the left shoulder, raked the top of the heart, and exited the front of the rib cage on the right side. She turned, took 3 steps and fell over.
Thanks to all who have posted roundball loading information in the past. It has been very helpful.
I will post pictures when I get home tonight.

Congratulations, Matt - so good when a great plan ends up with meat in the freezer.
Now, stay warm!

Well all here goes my 1st attempt at posting a photo.
I'm the one with the mustache. My brother is the other guy and his deer.
Neither are large deer by any means but they are good eating size.
Sorry you can't see the deer better. My wife took the picture and was not going to stand out in the cold any longer so we could pose better!

I'm off to Tennessee next Monday to hunt with my son for a week. Its supposed to be warmer down there which will be good.

Bill,
I will be taking it along again this year. It will be my dense brush, spot and stalk gun. I will be using a scoped Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel as my primary Iowa deer gun.
I'm really amazed at the accuracy of the Mossberg with sabot slugs!

I haven't tried factory sabots in mine (M835 Mossberg 24" rifled tube), just some preliminary round ball loads that made a 1 1/2" group at about 30 yards offhand with open sights and some 1 ounce 3" high vel. 1,790fps? WW foster slugs that grouped just about identically and on top of the bead the way the sight was already set. Those kicked pretty good in that gun - I was surprised at the recoil. Didn't expect that much punch.

I have both Hodgdon's Longshot and AA's Steel, but still haven't gotten around to buying a roll crimp tool to assemble some high vel RB loads. At some point, I will and of course, relay that info here at NitroExpress. I could borrow my brother's roll crimper and make my own - on his lathe. Location of the roll pins should be easy enough.

Daryl,
Accurate roundball loads are the ultimate goal for the Mossberg but it will have to wait until next year as time is running short for good load development.
Gun deer season in Iowa starts in 5 weeks then the next weekend I'm off to Tennessee for rifle deer season.
Squirrel hunting is just starting to get really good around here and pheasant season starts Saturday. So you see why roundball load development must wait.
Oh yeah, work also gets in the way of all the above, but it pays for it all so I quess its not all bad.
