I'll be using a recently acquired Interarms Mark X "Alaskan" 375 H&H to hunt brownies here in SE AK this spring/fall. So far it functions as a nice, heavy-metal rifle. Anybody had any significant problems with the Mark X actions in 375 that need to be checked out carefully before hitting the field? Positive feedback is welcome as well from any Mark X owners.

I built a .25-06 on a Mark X action and a .257 Weatherby on one and was happy with both. I did have a problem with the magnum action wanting to drop the empties in the magazine instead of holding them until they was ejected to the side but this was an easy fix and all was well. I wish I could find some in the .375 H&H length.....good stuff!!!!

vapodog,
I've got a friend who's carried his Mark X in 458 Win Mag for years without a single glitch. He's stopped a charging grizzly with it. The action is solid, despite the few naysayers. I have had significant weakness problems with my Weatherby in 338 Win Mag (weak floorplate release, broken bolt release latch). I trust my Mark X Mauser more than the Wby.

hello Deishu

i have been using a Mark X since 1982. it is a .338 win mag so it is built on a standard-length action.

is your .375 H&H on a magnum-length action, or did they use a standard-length action and undercut the front receiver ring?

i know that harry selby's super-famous .416 rigby was on a standard-length mauser action. the only pitfall there -- besides weakening the action when you cut out metal -- is the cartridge feeds at a steeper angle, i.e. less reliably.

i have been 100.00% satisfied with my 1982-vintage Zastava-made Mark X.

it was the first expensive custom rifle i ever built; couldn't afford one before then! i chose the Mark X action with great care after extensive reseArch.

then i had harry mcgowen do an accuracy job on the action, barrel it with a premium barrel, add a canjar trigger with tang safety, and then his son stocked it for me.

i put over $2,000 into it in 1982 dollars, so that shows you how highly i thought of the Zastava action. and i got my money's worth!

i finally had to rebarrel it last year after 22 years service. i had harry do that, of course.

the only caveat i would give you is to have a really fine gunsmith go thru and smooth out the action for dangerous game -- polish the follower, the rails, the raceways, lap the lugs etc. that's not quite the same as having david miller or a-square make it into a world-class dangerous game rifle but it sure will eliminate 90% of the most common hangups.

good luck & good hunting

lapsub

lapsub,
It seems to be a regular magnum length action. The rifle was manufactured around '82 or '83. It's in the wooden monte carlo stock and has the second recoil lug mounted on the barrel. It appears to be the same as the Whitworth express model only with different stock and non-express rear sight. I hear what you're saying about smoothing the action out, but it functions pretty smoothly as is. I bought it from a local guy who put only 10 rounds through it. He bought it new in '83 or '84. It's a nice rifle in near perfect condition.

The zastava actions imported by interarms seem to have been pretty good for the price however the chas daly imports seem to have been down graded.....

Somehow Brownells was trying to get the import action and lost out to chas Daly (KBI) and Brownells was disappointed by it. Personally I think Brownells would have demended a higher standard of quality from Zastava and the action might have been a little higher priced but certainly worth it.....

This is very disappointing turn of events to have the potential of real Mauser actions in short standard and magnum lengths and left hand to boot and then add the stainless and mini series.....I think the builders would have a bananza with them.....but the cheap ass name of Daly has injured the zastava actions in my eyes seriously.

vapodog,
I can't attest for the new production Zastavas, but I do know there are a lot of newly manufactured rifles of US descent that are cheap ass. My Weatherby in 338 Win Mag I'd put in that category, as well as a recently purchased Remington rifle. Time was when these were more solidly built. Point is, if Zastava has downgraded their actions, it may be they're following somebody else's lead across the pond. Again, the Mark X I own is a well built rifle. Time will tell if the new Zastavas have departed their sound pedigree. Based on the one I own (manufactured '82 or '83) I wouldn't hesitate to invest in a new Zastava Mauser action.
