9.3x62 on a K98

This is a rifle I had built for myself that I though others might enjoy. Found it at a gunshop semi-sporterized in 308 caliber. I kept the Warne QD mounts, rings, and bolt handle as it came and had a gunsmith swap out the barrel and do some other modifications. I did the stockwork - it's not perfect, but pretty darn good considering my prior attempts at stock making.

Here's the details of the build:
- 1940 K98 action & bottom metal
- #718 LW barrel long chambered in 9.3x62 cut to 23 inches
- NECG front and rear sights
- Talley barrel band sling swivel
- Black walnut stock w/ decelerator pad

7.3 pounds as shown. A little shy of 9 pounds with scope, ammo, and sling.

I like the stock. Very good lines and ergonomically pleasing. The only jarring feature I find is the military trigger guard with the hole for a sling swivel. I would suggest you try to find a 1909 Argentine unit with hinged floorplate to replace it with. They turn up from time to time on eBay. Or try http://www.hoosiergunworks.com/catalog/mausers.html

Nice - absolutely nothing to complain about. I like it. I don't mind the TG, the slightly thick (for my taste) black spacer at the butt plate of the exaggerated slope at the feed port, or the abrupt widening of the bolt. These are some things I might change on my next one - but this one's just fine for a hunting rifle to be proud of.

Not a thing wrong with that rifle.
Should do well for everything you'd want a rifle to do.

If in the future you want to make the TG look a bit less military, here are 2 ways to do it.
This guard is exactly the same as yours, but with some careful filing and polishing.

This guard was handmade in the style of a double rifle or shotgun.
It takes a bit of time and working to make one, but it's not all that hard to do. The tang is inlet into the wood and covers the rear guard screw.
The front of the guard has a threaded stud that screws into the bottom metal like a crank, and the long rear tang inlets into the curve of the pistol grip. Makes a nice looking guard

The rifle was not quite finished when the pics were taken, but you can get the general idea of how it’s done from them anyhow.

I very much like the classic, clean lines of it. I'm also a huge fan of the calibre.

Everyone has their own taste preferences in the little things, but I think you did a hell of a job

Well done. You have a rifle you could hunt the world with. Take a bow, for your stock work and the L/W barrels are superb.

The trigger guard idea is a good one and I'm sure you can pick up ex-mil guards for nix to practice on. Here is the guard in the white from my 250-3000 which was filed and shaped my gunsmith. It shows what can be done. The floorplate was replaced with one that wasn't pitted. He also filled the lock screw holes, however I don't mind them as they are very practical.

Very nice build, love the lines. By the way are the NECG sights swetted on or drilled and tapped?

Deepwoods, the sights are sweated on. I prefer solder over screws and it was even more important on this build as the rifle has a very thin barrel.

Guys, appreciate the input on the trigger guard. I had thought about either filing it or swapping it out, but it really didn't bother me.

The hole in the TG is for a sling, the bolt disassembly hole was in the butt stock ( that big disk in the middle of the K98 butt )or with the pressed steel cupped buttplate used after about 1942 there was hole through that which did the job.
