Massive brown bear takes a tumble

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Xxz-gDDt_dc

A hunt on the Alaskan Peninsula for a huge brown bear. Measuring ten feet and four inches and a shot at a range of 340 yards.

I saw that video a few days ago and even being an avid hunter that knows that 'yes there are often not so perfect shots'
I felt that this vid feeds the antis with ammo.
It certainly doesn't showcase what most of us preach that we do.
I personally would be thrilled with the trophy but extremely disappointed in myself with the shooting.

I hesitated to post, Gryphon and John. I feel the same way and felt they should have let the bear come closer, considering the 'skill level' displayed by the shooter. I found the video difficult to watch.

Personally speaking, I would not have permitted the hunter to shoot at a bear from that distance - no matter what rifle he was shooting. 340yards it just too far. I would even say that 140 is too far for such a bear.

Agree with you all.

As much as the hunter is a good shot, I was surprised
they didn't let it come closer.

Video is def fuel for the antis.

I didn't type any comments. Wanted to see what people said first without any bias of opening comments.

I thought the shot was overly distant. Not having hunted bear in the mountains, I wouldn't know what the standard is, but would have thought closer was better. As the bear was walking closer, I can't see why they didn't wait to let it closer.

The first shot may be too far back. Considering the dust impact of the pass-through shot. Unless the camera man is well to the left of the shooter and not a couple of metres away only.

Having taken a shot at an extreme range, not shot it properly, it is harder to hit it again and finish it off properly. This is usual with overly distant shots.

When the bear is sliding and tumbling down the mountain, the background whoops, yells, cheers are really ffffing aweful. IMO. I would be ashamed at that sort of shooting and result, or a little embarrassed. And that sort of carry on .... hell I must be boring on hunts, because I enjoy them without all that racket and chest beating. Perhaps I am more reserved ..... "Dude", "dude" "Hey Dude" ... Are these guys 15 years old?

The film is part of an aired to TV hunt I believe. One reason they probably took the over distant shot. Because they want to succeed for the sake of TV film sales.

Very nice trophy bear at the end.

To any US members. Do they have to pack out the meat as well by law? Just interested.

I thought he got it in the body or front leg
as he seemed to be limping.

Anyone else have any thoughts ?

I don't have a problem with long range shots when nothing else fits but in this case the bear was getting closer, the hunters were huffing and puffing from exertion or maybe a little excitement and the first shot was taken when the bear was on the move. They had all the time in the world to take a rest, get properly bedded down, take a closer shot, and take it when the bear was properly stationary. The first shot at long range just has to be the best.
As for the whoops and hollers, I've really come to expect nothing different in a lot of published video. Like NitroX I've always been a boring old fart when hunting and quite frankly I just respect the animal a whole lot more.

Pair of amateurs with itchy trigger fingers, zero respect.

I wonder which one of those geniuses thought it was a good idea to post that fiasco on youtube?

To me the first shot looked well back in the body. I was always taught not to shoot unless you are sure of the shot and at that distance I could never be sure of it. Also agree with the dude thing. Really a bad look all over.

I actually turned off the sound when they started hollering
and then wound it forward to see if anything else was worth watching.

1st lousy shot, guts and hind leg by the looks of it, taken at a walking bear - that screwed the pooch!

After that's it takes a lot of tissue damage to stop a grizzly - especially a big one. Only the brain or spine works quickly then.

1st shot was taken too bloody far away for precise shooting - not smart.

340 yards is unethical but in the end its the guide who is responsible for this

Not knowing anything about bear hunting in that area I don't know if that was a long or standard range shot for there, so my comments maybe out of context.

I too felt they should of let the bear come closer. If this was possible and it looked to me like it was, then there is no excuse for shooting a tough animal at that distance. To me, what looks like poor shot placement confirms my thoughts.

The yelling and whooping might be acceptable in some areas but like the rest I do not think it reflects well.

Rather revolting of you ask me, but on par with most of what gets produced for TV these days.

Yesterday I was flipping the channels and I watched a guy shoot a mule deer at over 350 yards, with an ultra high-tech scope on a rifle that was anchored in a sled and sitting on a table.

Then of course came the whooping and the hollering...

Personally, I find it disgusting. The bear would have come much closer that that, given its line, and the slope. With a bear, especially one that size, you make your first shot count, as Daryl says.

A hunter should know when NOT to shoot. Great advertisement for longer range hunting, by mediocre hunters, isn't it?

The whooping and congratulations? What did they have to feel proud of?

I thought that I saw the trace of the first shot go into the right shoulder area and exit. Also the bear was travelling left to right going over the ridge that they were sitting on, if they had waited much longer the bear would be going away from them. The view from the plane looks like that if they had let the bear go any further that he would have gone over the ridge and they wouldn't have had a shot.

Just rewatched it and still seems to me the bear was coming closer to them. Bear was on a ridge that that intersected with the ridge they were on. They could of moved further uhil to close the gap as well. The guide certainly did not look happy as the bear was moving through the snow leaving a big blood trail.

Dangerous game?

I have no problem with someone who wants to shoot game at that 300+ yards. It does take some skill to do that properly. However, this thread is for "Hunting in Africa & hunting dangerous game". I do not believe shooting any animal, grizzly, rhino, or buffalo, at 340 yards puts one in peril from dangerous game.

Here in Alaska only the hide is required to be taken out. Brownies usually don't taste good and aren't eaten.
That was way too long of a shot. Pretty sad overall IMO.
