Single Shot Rifles at Auction
      #230486 - 25/05/13 10:50 AM

Once again, I thought I would start a thread on the single shot auction scene.
Maybe John can create individual forum topics for the Mausers, Doubles, Mannlichers and Singles at auction for us all to share. But until then, here is my first entry for the "Singles at Auction" thread.

At the upcoming Holt's auction. Certainly, quite a special rifle:

Sale A1072 Lot 1220

ALEXR. HENRY & CO.
A FINE AND RARE .303 NITRO EXPRESS FRASER 1880 PATENT SIDELEVER TAKE-DOWN FALLING-BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 3474,
serial number on barrel and face of action only, 27in. round nitro barrel engraved 'ALEXR. HENRY & CO. 22 FREDERICK ST. EDINBURGH.', block mounted open sights and two folding leaf sights marked for 100, 200 and 300 yards, ramp-mounted bead fore-sight, Fraser patent sidelever falling block action, patent no. 5403 of 23rd December 1880, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'S' detail, the hand mounted with a fully adjustable folding peepsight, partially chequered trigger, fine and bold acanthus scroll engraving, the action unsigned, retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, 14 3/8in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, horn pistolgrip-cap, inlet sling eye, including chequered horn buttplate, fore-end with fluted tip and engraved Deeley & Edge patent release catch, weight 6lb. 12oz.

Other Notes: Current research suggests that only around four hundred Fraser patent falling block rifles were ever produced. Daniel Fraser died in 1902 and although the company continued in business under the guidance of Daniel Fraser's son, Donald, for nine years, it is surmised that most of the falling block rifles were made during Daniel's lifetime. The Henry records show just 20 Fraser patent rifles being sold by them.

Estimate £8,000-12,000

Thank you Lancaster, good of you to keep us informed of these cool rifles !

I like the look of that caliber, make a good Lee Speed round I think ?

I was going to do a 8X57R on a BSA barrel, but it wouldn't go that small, so went to 375
a 9X57R would be good I think ?

to bad the peep sight is lost
show again who popular the 11,2x51R Kropatschek was in the time from 1870 to 1890 in this area
its not for no reason Waffen Dorfner in Vienna still make a commercial and CIP proofed load.

thats an very interesting rifle
it looks like they build a modified M 71 receiver around a M 88 bolt. possible that they bought a M 88 bolt by one of the firms in Suhl still making M 88 rifles and design a smart single shot with this.

The .22 is an target rifle, descriped in Bock's "Kleinkalibergewehre" 1924.
Before the egunauction i dont now the 5,6x35R model.
The rifles made by Meffert, but the construction is from Grothe/Stendal.
I have written an article about the .22 and Grothe in Visier some months ago.

George Gibbs Farquharson in the next Rock Island auction.

Description from the auction:

The top of the barrel is marked "METFORD 1764 GEORGE GIBBS 39 CORN ST. BRISTOL .275 BORE" behind the rear sight. The barrel is equipped with a raised blade front sight and a rear sight composed of three leaf sights (one fixed, two folding) and one ladder sight. The ladder sight is graduated 100-800 and marked "Charge/90/570" on the left side and graduated 200-500 and marked "Charge 100/360" on the right side. One of the folding leaf sights is marked "300/Charge" and "YDS/100/360", while the other folding leaf sight is marked "200/Charge" and "YDS/100/360". The action, trigger guard and lever feature a fine scroll engraving with the action marked "GEORGE GIBBS/BRISTOL" on the left side, "800" on top of the chamber and "BOLTED" in gold on the right side. The pistol grip stock and forearm are highly figured walnut with multi-point checkering on the forearm, checkered steel buttplate with compartment, metal grip cap with engraved compartment, silver blank initial oval and contrasting forend tip. Form fitting thin sheet steel panels are inletted and screwed onto both sides of the pistol grip and extend halfway down the butt for reinforcement. These panels are called Selous side plates and are named after the famed African hunter Frederic C. Selous (1851-1917). Selous is credited for designing stock plates, such as the type that are on this rifle, to reduce the chances of the stock breaking during heavy recoil. Famed British explorer, officer, hunter and conservationist, Frederic C. Selous was a true life adventurer best known for his exploits in South-East Africa who defined the popular image of the traveling Englishman in Imperial Africa. His circle of friends included other historical figures of the late 19th/early 20th century such as Theodore Roosevelt, Cecil Rhodes and Frederick Russell Burnham. While participating in British Army action against German forces on the banks of the Rufiji River during World War I, Selous was killed by a German sniper on January 4, 1917. He was 65 years old. Consignor states that this is "one of two [Gibbs rifles with Selous side plate] in existence. Drop at comb 1 1/2 inches, drop at heel 1 7/8 inches, cast off at heel 1/8 inches, cast off at toe 1/4". The rifle comes with a contemporary oak case lined in red felt, James Dixon & Sons oiler and brush.
Condition: Very good as custom refinished. The rifle retains 98% of the blue finish showing some high edge wear. There is some finished over pitting mostly on the Selous side plates. The forearm is a well made, high quality, custom replacement and the buttstock has a hole from a removed sling swivel. Mechanically fine.

Obviously, there are many more than two Gibbs Farquharsons with Selous plates so the consignor is in error on that point.
The rifle must have been chambered in 461 No.2 originally as that rear sight with the black powder charges and bullet weights conforms with the No.2 loadings. The gun looks to have been rebarreled while utilizing the original rear sight and as stated the forend is an obvious replacement.
I would like to get this rifle and put it back to its original configuration. That would be the only just treatment for such a rifle IMO.

the 3rd looking realy unusual

a Husqvarna Martini rifle with a surprise chamber in 450(?)

https://auctionet.com/sv/138791-151-kulg.../images#image_1

I dont believe that the action was made in Sweden. Husqvarna had some connections to Liege so the action was probably build in Belgium.
78cm long barrel
Husqvarna build rolling block and double rifles in 450 BPE 3" and also later some double guns in 450 NE but can the 3" long brass working in this action here?

another mystery Martini for sale at Widforss

https://auctionet.com/sv/137318-152-kulg.../images#image_1

a typical british rifle but made(?) by W.Foerster Berlin, prussian court gunmaker
caliber is given here as 10,8x47R so probably one of the german target rounds made by using 11,15x60R Mauser brass

A bit late here in reply to the Gibbs for sale at Rock Island Auction.
It is a great pity that this rifle has been "got at" by the gun butchers, I cannot understand why anyone would actually pay to have a nice rifle like this ruined, total lack of taste I suppose, it could however still be returned to it's former glory by un doing all of the butchery, the forend looks absolutely hideous! Huvious my friend, your thoughts are exactly the same as mine.
I notice the screws in the Selous plates(one of only two Ha, Ha) are tightened to their original "timed" position so at least they got that bit right!I can only hope it went to a good home.
Chris, France.

The estimates on the Westley and (especially) the A. Henry are way too high IMO.
The Westley "long range large game" rifles are much sought after but maybe not so much in an 1871 and with the exchange and premium, could nudge $10KUS which I just don't see on an "improved Martini".
Is the market up in the UK? Seems like the estimates for this kind of stuff are double what they were just a couple years ago.

Huvius - The Alexander Henry is about right for the UK (most good ones will fetch over £4000) until we have to remember the 30% commission/tax that go on top of it

I certainly agree that the WR is way too high

The Snider/Newarks Patent would interest me at the lower estimate as I particularly like Sniders but the aforesaid 30% would put it too high

I will be on my way to the Pacific when the auction happens but will try to watch it on the internet, there are a couple of other items that interest me and on line bidding can lead one astray..........................

Bought a Cape Rifle today, will post soon

Best

Tony

Purdey single shot sidelock made for the Marchioness of Breadalbane (of Blackmount fame)
http://auctions.holtsauctioneers.com/asp...3&saletype=

J. PURDEY & SONS
A RARE 7X57R ROTARY-UNDERLEVER SINGLE-BARRELLED SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 16880,
26in. London nitro reproved lined barrel (originally in .303 calibre) with solid raised partially matted top rib, engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID-PRESSED STEEL', open sights and folding leaf sight marked for 100 and 200 yards and with white metal-inlaid sight lines, ramped bead fore-sight with flip-up moonsight, the breech end mounted with a Swarovski Habicht 3-9x36A Nova telescopic sight in later quickly-detachable mounts, self-opening treble-grip action with sprung underlever, removable striker disc, fences finely carved in high relief in Barre style with stylised acanthus on a stippled background, automatic bolted safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' and 'BOLTED' details, right hand lockplate with arrow cocking-indicator with pinless dummy lockplate on the left, best fine floral bouquet and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining slight traces of original colour-hardening with some reblued finish, 14 5/8in. well-figured replacement pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap, sling swivels and engraved steel heel and toe-plates, weight 9lb. 7oz., in its brass-mounted oak and leather case

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was originally completed in .303 calibre, 'with 26in. Whitworth steel barrel, lever over guard, opening third grip to action and eyes for sling, detonating scroll engraved'. The rifle was completed in 1900 for Marchioness Breadalbane.
The Purdey trade label in the lid of the case has 'Lady Breadalbane' inscribed in pencil at the top left corner.

Lady Alma Imogen Carlotta Leonore Graham, born in 1854 as the youngest daughter of James Graham, 4th Duke of Montrose married Gavin Campbell, 1st Marquess of Breadalbane KG, PC, JP, DL, Seventh Earl of Breadalbane and Holland in 1872 to become the Marchioness Breadalbane. She died in 1932, ten years after the death of her husband. The marquessate of Breadalbane became extinct following his death. His Scottish titles, the Earl of Breadalbane and Holland continued until 1995, when the tenth Earl died childless and the title became dormant.

Other Notes: The proof marks on the barrel would indicate that in 1953 the rifle was converted to .22 Hornet and that subsequently, in 1993 it was lined with a Bohler Rasant steel insert in its current 7x57R calibre and reproved at the London proofhouse.

Estimate £18,000-22,000

Lancaster,
as fas as I know the min. 10.2 mm caliber rule is still in force in Graubünden, and the ancient 10,3x60R is still much in use.

The descrition characterizes the scope mount as being fitted to the receiver and the barrel. It looks to me as though both blocks are on the barrel. It would have been a shame to drill and tap the receiver.

Some of these old British rounds had multiple guises, seems like a good round to use for BP express which we have to have a case capacity (total if I'm correct) of more than 110gn.
I'm assuming here it is the 500/450 BP No1 (carbine)the Westly Richards 2 3/4"

Of course the rifle was made in Suhl! All prewar Heeren rifles were made there. Though Nagel & Menz, Baden – Baden, held the original 1880 patent by Colonel Count Arturo Heeren, they never made "their" actions themselves. As usual, they had their rifles made in Suhl by Stephan Heym (not related to the still active F.W. Heym company). As long as the patent was valid, Nagel & Menz had the exclusive right to market these actions. After the patent expired, Heym could provide other gunmakers with actions and complete rifles directly. At Stephan's death in 1919 his son Max Heym took over the business. Max Heym had the word "Heeren" protected as a trademark. Max continued until 1938, when because of old age he sold his business to Ernst Kerner & Co., Suhl, who continued to make Heeren rifles and actions until 1945. During the interwar years about 80 to 100 Heeren actions were made each year.
It was after 1945 only, when E.Kerner, Suhl, was no more, that others started making Heeren actions. Known are Glaser - Zürich, Oreschowski – Graz, Furtschegger _ Kufstein, Outschar – Ferlach. All other gunmakers bought in their actions or the complete rifles from these makers.

bavarian M 1869 Werder "lightning" rifle probably sporterized in Suhl/Zella Mehlis, maybe one the rifles made once by C.G. Haenel
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5674581

interesting fact that the rifle is chambered for the 8x58R Sauer &Sohn one of the older so called Express cartridge because the mother case was the 360 BPE 2,25". such express cartridges had a lower pressure than 8x57 rimmed and rimless and were used for early weaker break action guns. the old Werder rifle get a new breechblock when the rifle was rechamberd from 11,5x50R Werder to 11,15x60R Mauser 71 in the 1870s and seems it was strong enough then for small bore nitro rounds.

You are spot on there Huvios , You have one, I have one, and there is the example here, I also know of a number of others shown in Wal Winfer's books, but this is very nice, and begging to be put back into original configuration , at least they got the Selous plate screws in right! Chris.

Chris, I did buy that one and it is being rebarreled and new forend and case coloring.
It will be a 450 3-1/4 BPE though.
I have the Metford barrel to use and I really wanted to go with a 500/450 of some sort but the trough in the action is really too small for that size of rimmed cartridge. Externally, the barrel will be turned to match my 461 and to use the original rear sight that is on the small barrel. I'm really glad that sight was still with the gun!
I didn't have a Selous plated Gibbs before getting this one.

Re: Single Shot Rifles at Auction [Re: lancaster]
      #281783 - 01/05/16 03:59 AM

Here's hoping!
Looks like I am the high bidder on this A. Henry but I have lost auctions where I thought myself to be the winner - somehow... Sometimes my bid matches another but being made before my bid, takes the win. We'll see.

Anyway, here is the auction description:

Description: This Alexander Henry express rifle has the hammer and lock on the left and a shadow line cheekpiece on the right for left handed shooters. While the original military pattern Henry rifles had their locks and hammers on the left to facilitate easier loading, Henry express rifles typically have their hammers and locks on the right side as has long been standard on sporting rifles. This example has a blade front sight on a large integral base, a notch rear sight with a folding leaf and scope on the raised rib that is marked "ALEX'R HENRY, EDINBURGH & LONDON," intricate English scrollwork on the action, and a checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with checkered steel buttplate. The lock has a sliding half-cock safety ahead of the hammer similar to the style found on high end flintlock and percussion arms from early in the 19th century. The underside of the barrel has several English proofs, "500 EX," and "6582/A.H." The lower tang is marked "5909." The .500 Express black powder cartridge was most popular for hunting tigers in India.

Condition: Fine. The original blue finish on the barrel remains mostly intact with the balance having turned a plum brown. The case colors have mostly silvered out aside from some vivid case colors visible in the protected areas. The are some spots of varnish/oil stains as well as a few minor marks and light scratches. The wood is also fine and has crisp checkering and a few minor handling and storage marks. The scope is more well worn and has distinct signs of having been mounted further forward in the replacement rings at some point. The optics are clear except for some black visible in the outer circumference. The action functions perfectly, and the markings and engraving patterns are distinct.

Now, obviously they are correct that it is a LH rifle with the cheekpiece on the right of the stock. Often Alex Henrys are identified as LH simply because the lock is on the left which is not the case as many A. Henrys were made for right handed shooters (cheekpiece on the left) but with the lock on the right or left. A lock on the right would aid a LH shooter anyway. I'm not a lefty but that doesn't bother me on a rifle such as this.

One thing they seem to have missed is the forend latch.
This latch was used by Henry only on his takedown rifles! So, as I said, "Here's Hoping!!"

Huvius - Very nice indeed, the front bolted left hand lock is indeed unusual (most front bolted were R/H)

Both my AHs (1 L/H, 1 R/H) are rear bolted. From the numbers it appears mid 1880's

Good luck, I hope all goes well and you get it

Well, didn't get it.

Someone got a great rifle for an even greater price!
$4500 plus premium is about as low as a takedown Henry gets.
I guess I must find solace in the Alex Henry rifles I already have...

If it was an internet auction it sounds as if someone put a sniper bid on it/them

They are beatable (depending on the auction site) - ebay is usually easy as it counts down the time available

PM me if you get another one and I will try to help

This was in the US at the Rock Island auction.
My guess is that someone put in the same internet bid as I but placed it before I did.
Just goes to show, if you are really serious, you must arrange a phone bid or have an agent at the auction.
If it were a right handed rifle, I would have done just that but I was hoping to snag a bargain so kind of went in on the soft side.
Its funny, R.I. has this "bid plus" feature which I considered but opted out on. I don't know if that would have made a difference but I will strongly consider it in the future.

Too bad it was not done with a barrel liner back to the original .375 Express......

Yeah. 444 Marlin is a bit of an odd choice although there really aren't many choices in going up from .375 to something bigger when dealing with barrel diameter and breech diameter.
Would have made a great 450-400 but maybe the chamber couldn't accommodate it. Don't know that for sure but now there isn't anywhere to go from here unless the barrel can take a 450 bore.

Some really interesting rifles, there, lancaster, the Nowotny in particular.
It appears to take a ctg. The ctg. is shoved into the chamber with the holding pin to the outside at 2 o'clock.
A percussion cap is placed on the central nipple.
The hammer is simply a way of cocking the action, and the striker is internal, hitting the cap to discharge the gun.

Most interesting - at least, that is the way I see this one working- a guess, in other words.

This patented action looks quite similar with these .22 LR actions whose are not so uncommon here in Finland. Before WWII Finnish Home Guard bought quite many of them for target shooting purposes.

Hi Lancaster

thanks for doing the work that I was too lazy to do - copying the pictures etc!
Alive and well, thanks too, after some hospital visits recently.

Check the maker, Leithner in Ischl. I did not realize before he was active into breech loader times. This is quite the nonplusultra Ischlerstutzen. Interesting to see all those little muzzleloader details that were retained, including the little golden "Gams" in the cheekpiece - was this a "trademark" of Leithner?
I guess at that time, 1880 and compared to muzzleloader ballistics, .450 BPE was quite advanced.

Here is a similar rifle, caliber 12.5 mm Lefaucheux.

https://www.waffengebraucht.at/waffen/so...in-ischl--78352

And some older percussion rifles from Leithner:

In the Rock Island auction Feb 17

The Westley 1869 is a bit rough (replacement forend and likely butt)but interestingly proved at 48 bore.
That equates to .461" so may be chambered in a Gibbs cartridge.

Here is one more Ischler Stutzen by Leithner, an early breech loader.
Interesting how the muzzleloader apperance is kept

By 1860, some of the Lefaucheu-action-type guns were being noticed in India & hope and speculation they could be made in larger calibres, suitable for dangerous game.

Interesting Lancaster - not sure if that 'part' on the forward edge of the action, but it's like a rear peep sight arrangement?
Definitely unusual that is for sure.
Perhaps DoubleD might be able to shed dome light on this one......most unusual indeed!

This is a single shot you fellows over in Europe may have seen before. I was told it was built by a guy in Ontario in 1912, but ?????
Model 71 action, S# on it is 3886N. That is the only stamping on the top-side of the action. It has a 29 1/2" bl. and is chambered in 8.15x46R.
It is obvious from the muzzle and breech, this rifle has been re-lined. Interesting choice of calibres.

It is a lot of fun to shoot offhand. Holds like a dream!
Jacketed ammo is loaded with 174gr. RN .312" Hornady's, which it shoots as well as the .314" 198gr. cast bullets I first tried.
I will attempt to pick up a .315" mould, as that is the groove dia. of this rifle.
I consistently was able to hit the big rectangular plate at 200 meters, offhand, with both jacketed and cast bullets. The plate is 14" x 16".

ALEX HENRY
A .45-90 CAL. HENRY PATENT FALLING-BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 5771,
36in. black powder proofed replacement two stage barrel, tunnel fore-sight, the hand mounted with a vernier rear-sight, plain action, cranked right hand lockplate signed 'A. HENRY', some external pitting, 14 1/4in. stock including 5/8in. ebonite extension, sling eyes, weight 10lb.

Provenance: Noted historian Donald Dallas has provided us with the following information:

This is an incredibly rare 3rd quality sealing rifle sold in 1884. Henry built around 478 sealing rifles for use in and around Greenland on the whalers. Due to their hard usage virtually none survive and this is the ONLY example I have ever come across!

Must have been 'sniping' at the seals with this one Lancaster with a peep of that travel range!
Amazing considering the salt water exposure, it appears to be in pretty good nick alright!

I think what this rifle started as and what it is now is not the same. The clue is in the description,'.45-90 CAL." and "replacement two stage barrel". Sights are a clue also.

I think Author Dallas is reporting is what it says in Henry files as to what this rifle was sent out as. Not what it is now.

Exactly.
Could have had a bad bore and as such a good candidate to rebarrel and sight as a long range black powder cartridge rifle.
A lot more interesting than a Sharps or Winchester 1885 in my opinion.

A like-condition original 16 to 18 pound Model 74 Sharps would most certainly have a higher re-sale price. A lighter, standard Sharps, maybe not - I do not know.
As a shooter & talking point around here, no contest, the Alex Henry all the way - OH WOW!

send the pics to a friend in czechia who collect old bohemian made guns because it falls into his area. he write me back that he was the second bidder on this years ago and be happy it still exist but it dont become cheaper over the time - quite the opposite

the design is typical for old german airguns and also came into the united states by german gunmakers. before the great war they were made most notably by Oskar Will Venuswaffenwerk in Zella St. Blasii, since 1919 connected with Mehlis into Zella Mehlis near Suhl
here is typical Kurbelspanner https://forum.vintageairgunsgallery.com/spring-piston-crank-wound-airguns/o-will-kurbelspanner/

the design was later simplified by adding a lever like this one

https://egun.de/market/item.php?id=8223315#

from time to time I get lust to by such a airgun

the dream of a boy's gun, would like to see how it works: LANGENHAM, GERMANY
A RARE .177 & 9mm (FLOBERT) BREAK-BARREL CONVERTIBLE AIR-RIFLE, MODEL 'ARBENZ PATENT GEM', serial no. 10413,
circa 1910, with smooth-bore .177 insert inside the smooth-bore 17 3/4in. two-stage blued shot-barrel, dove-tailed fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight to the dolls-head locking latch, the top-flat of barrel signed 'PATENT' with the Langenham crossed pistol trade-mark and 'GEM No. 10413', the left hand upper flat marked 'ARBENZ'S PATENT', the breech-face marked '13 20673 95' on the barrel section, the air-chamber face with floating firing pin and marked '73', two exposed tabs for inner barrel removal and a further wing-nut on the right hand side possibly for pin replacement, slanted nickel-plated air-chamber, walnut butt-stock, semi crescent plated heel-plate, plated cocking link forming the trigger-guard (link pin poor replacement) and much original finish remaining
https://auctions.holtsauctioneers.com/as...5&saletype=

must be a air gun but how do it work with the the 9 mm Flobert rimfire?

Lancaster, Much to my surprize I do not find the Selous plates to be uncomfortable on my G Gibbs in 303, (obviously re barrelled from something more interesting), even in the 40 deg C temperatures here in France, I am sure this is due to the fact that the plates are very thin, and closely fitted the stock , I have not yet tested them in sub zero temperatures. Stay safe! Chris B.

Appears to me to be a similar flavour, however I think it is a "one-off" gun designed and 'custom' made, likely in a German or Austrian shop.
It is also similar (idea) to some of Billinghurst Harmonica-actions of the percussion period in the USA.
Quite an interesting design and operation, with the shotgun chamber sliding sideways to be in line with the action and butt stock.

Oberhammer in Munich had an "DRGM" on this construction or parts. This "DRGM" was granted in July 1896. The title referred to a "military rifle with a shot barrel underneath". But - this system of the gun i bought i have never seen as military system. Oberhammer was able to manufacture weapons himself, so I assume that the weapon was made in his workshop. As you can see in the link rifles like these from Oberhammer are known- but with the Mauser98 System.

Regarding these little rifles what is the function of the spring mounted on the left side of the action.

That is the non-selective ejector spring, unlike on a quality double gun, these rook rifles eject the spent case or unfired cartridge every time the gun is opened up.

Going back to the Oberhammer combination #344744......

So, the riddle continues .....

Chamber cast gives exact the dimensions for the 5,6x52R aka .22 Savage High Power. But - this system is too weak for that, only locking over the bolt handle approach. What the hell.......

Interesting the chamber, 5.6x52R would be for that round, a lever action round of 48,000PSI on pezio, 42,000(crusher) CIP numbers. There are no SAAMI numbers for it listed in the KwK chart.

the 22 savage high power could have - per definition - no low power load
sometimes it remains a mystery, maybe you made a handload in the .22 hornet class to stay safe

Lancaster,

another classic rifle from Leithner!

Whatever one may think about modern rifles built in the old-fashioned way, this may be a classic of tomorrow - in my eyes Mr. Wutti certainly has built the nicest Ischler Stutzen in our time.

https://auctions.springer-vienna.com/en/...mp;currentpos=7

hammer break action rifle "Ischler Stutzen" M. Wutti - Geisthal, 6,5x65R, Starting price 9.000 EUR

Detail
60 cm octagonal barrel, stepped partially matted rib, iron sights, extractor, doll's head, bright rounded action, engraved with fine scroll and scenes of roe deer and chamois, marmots on the lock plate, signed "W. Fauland", finely carved fence in percussion style, on the right a rebounding back action hammer lock, hare's ear spur, external safety lever, double set trigger, carved horn finger rest, contrastingly grained walnut full stock, French polished, fine chequering, sloping cheekpiece, en-suite engraved steel buttplate with trap for 3 cartridges, 38,5 cm, sling swivels, split fore-end, horn schnabel, Deeley latch, German claw mounted Zeiss Diatal-C 6x32, reticle Plex, year of manufacture 1993, traditional stalking rifle of this exclusive maker in the style of the fin de siècle, condition 1.

there is a growing market by collectors who don't want the hassle with gun licence. good to pristine pre war airguns bringing a lot of money today.
was in Suhl last week, we visit some people there.
there was a weapon cabinet in the house of a descendant of an old gunmaker family full with vintage airguns probably worth like mine with vintage big bore rifles today.

Very nice.

So many lovely vintage firearms in Germany and neighbouring countries at decent prices. If many Euro countries did not limit how many could be owned, one could end up with a hundred!

A nice .303 sporting martini just sold today for $2400 plus commission. Condition was particularly nice, especially the wood. Price was about $800 over where I thought it would end. I've wanted a 303 or 450 sporting martini for a while now. Missed a couple at Holts. I guess I need to calibrate my spending expectations.

https://bid.paauctioncenter.com/ui/auctions/107930/13439553

I have an eye open for vintage (pre 1900) airguns and just now when I wait very nervous for the end of such an auction two other guns came into auction in sweden

one is a Kurbelspanner - crank cocking action(?) by G.Noack in Berlin
https://auctionet.com/de/3282604-ein-deu...e-halfte-des-19

the crank is missing like on most guns from this time

because of the local Berlin connection I would bid on this if there was not the other option now

second is a Hebelspanner - lever cocking action
https://auctionet.com/de/3282476-luftgewehr-zweite-halfte-des-19-jahrhunderts

such vintage airguns are very hard to find, they were offer up to 1900 but then driven out of the market by the new Will Bügelspanner - triggerguard cocking action

you see its basically the same gun but more comfortable than the old

cross your fingers that I have a new vintage airgun in two weeks

Hope you have 2 Lancaster!
Fingers crossed for you mate.
What do you replace the likes of old leather buckets with then, must be a fiddly job by the looks of that?

actually the action is very simple - the best way to make an action long lasting

I repair common airguns for friends but using only available parts you can buy. never remake a leather bucket but its not rocket science. You cut out the part, make it soft with water, then bring it in form with home made tools and let it dry.
to be true the Oskar Will airgun get a new leather bucket by my gunmaker.
I dont want to break anything on such a valuable airgun.

I have a couple of these, none no where near as nice. Price paid even plus commission is low for what I have seen over the years. for similar guns

Nice Martini DoubleD!
Cool lever on that old girl, would it still have the latching arrangement or just hold shut anyway?

The leather 'bucket/washer' is not difficult to make. My father replaced the one on my brother's Slavia air rifle when we were kids. Shot that gun a LOT.
By the time we were teenagers, there were no sights on it???? No idea why, but we still had no trouble shooting beer bottle caps in the window (no glass) of the horse barn when relatives were over for an evening, in the summer.
Seems that pellet rifle ALWAYS made a showing and NONE of the adults could learn to shoot it well due to the lack of sights. They (especially my RCMP uncle) marveled we were so good with it.
Upon questioning, telling them to simply look at the bottle cap over the barrel didn't help. LOL Instinctive shooting is even more accurate with a rifle, compared to a bow.
Can you tell, I still love shooting air rifles.
That trigger guard lever .25 cal is super!! I have 4 of them, all PCP.

I really liked the rifle but didn't bid enough. I'm a bit awash in small bore martinis but have nothing larger than a 300 Sherwood. Some day when I stop putting myself in the poorhouse for double rifles I will rectify that.

Apologies for posting this without hosted pictures and just links to the auction:

At Sunday's auction, 10/27/2024, at Carol Watson's Orange Coast Auctions, there were two Alexander Henry singles up for sale. Lots 23 and 24.

Lot 23 is a 500BPE takedown single https://cwocauctions.proxibid.com/A...ingle-Shot-Rifle/lotInformation/87561624

Lot 24 was retailed (finished?) by Reilly and is an earlier non-takedown in 450BPE. https://cwocauctions.proxibid.com/A...ingle-Shot-Rifle/lotInformation/87561625

I thought the 500BPE takedown was especially nice and bid on both. Don't know if I got either yet.
