My new regulation jig.

Ever since I started building double rifles, I've wanted a set-up that would give very precise adjustments and repeatability. I thought up this jig while hunting turkeys last week. I think that the photos will explain most of it. I started with a 1"x1"x6" piece of cold-rolled, milled a slot for the micrometers and gibs, and drilled holes for set screws. I went to the local cut-rate machine tool store and bought two 0-1" micrometers for $16.50 each. I hack-sawed off the anvil end of each and milled away some of the body in order to let them sit lower in the slot. This setup works even better than I had hoped for and allows adjustments of as little as .0005 if needed.

That is a swift setup there.
How will the micrometers take the heat?
Maybe a wider base and extended pins may be a solution if heat becomes an issue.

Awesome. Well done.

I believe a guy here in Aus made up a really neat
system for regulating doubles that removed the need
for all the wire etc.

Also made adjustments a lot quicker.

Ron,
Looks like a neat setup, I see no vertical adjustment, do you think like I do that its a product of that dead flat, nice aluminum I beam you use to assemble the barrels initially? When you smoke in the ribs both top and bottom and then heat up the barrels to adjust for regulation, do the ribs move without issue, and how far up the barrels toward the breech do you apply heat? do you have to add solder to the ribs as well as to the wedge? Thanks for your advise

Very nice piece of apparatus Ron. Similar to what the craftsmen at Holland use from what I've seen, only your settup is a little more elaborate.

I don't think that this is a soldering jug, but think that it is a regulation jig, meaning that it is used simply to adjust barrel spacing, but not for holding them during soldering process. RON, correct me if I am wrong?

Yes it is for holding the barrels during the soldering process. I bought the cheapest micrometers that I could find which have all metal parts, no plastics. So far I've used them four times and they still function perfectly. Even if I had to buy a new pair for each new gun that I build, at $32/pair it's worth it.

Ron,
I stand corrected. I use a similar jig; mine has stainless steel set screws (so solder won't adhere) to move barrels precisely side to side and/or up down ever so slightly, while measuring that movement with separate micrometers. Once the settings are achieved, I take away the micrometers, and set screws hold everything in place, and I solder. Seems to me that heat would alter precision of your micrometer set-up, but if it works, it works!

I start at 50yards/metros and then fine-tune the regulation at 100 yards/metros.I built this double on a 16 gauge BRNO ZP-47, in calibre 9.3x74R.
