Plain Alexander Henry

I bought this rifle last week from an old gentleman who shot it regularly

Very plain, .450 - 3 1/4", 28" round barrel, right hand bolted lock, 7 lbs 2 oz

Usual Henry rifling - could do with a scrub!

I telephoned John Dickson (who have the A-H records) and was told it was sold in October 1894 to the Duke of Westminster

It was one of 3, identical with consecutive serial numbers, probably bought for his staff??

He was a most interesting man, the First Duke with racing and country pursuits as his main interests, shooting in his estates in Cheshire and stalking in his relative's estates in Scotland

After eight children from his first marriage he married again, at the age of 57, a 24 year old and had 4 more children with her!

At 74 years, his last, he stalked a stag, and shot 25 snipe!

As well as being the richest man in England from property deals in Mayfair.

Some guy!!

The current Duke is now the richest man in England

I had problems loading the pics, here are its friends

Top is the new .450-3 1/4"

Next the ex Duke of Marlborough A H best rifle, left hand lock, pistol grip, octagonal barrel in .450 No. 2 musket

A George Gibbs MBL rebarrelled by Jeffries to .500 3 '

A martini sporter by Hollis in .577/450

Fields patent in .450 No.1 Carbine - the nicest action

My only break action, unmarked 10 bore

Of course the originator, Sharps' in 50-70

Nice collection you have there TH44.
The 10 bore, is it rifled? I see what looks to be a rear sight on the barrel.

Congrats TH, very nice, and my style...plain and well used. Being from Edinburgh doesn't hurt me liking it either.

That looks like a twin to one that I have.
The rear bolted lock is supposed to be fairly rare on the AH singles too.

That is what I have heared and observed myself. Very unusual on a plain grade gun I would think.

Matt - unfortunately it is a shotgun converted some time ago but it was at a dealers who did not want a lot for it as it had been cut down. It shoots round ball ok at 25 metres. Single barrelled cartridge bore rifles are, I believe quite rare
There is an excellent example of a single tip down 10bore Alexander Henry rifle with octagonal barrel in Wal Winfer's book - I would love that!

Mike - Is your serial number anywhere near mine 68XX? (PM me if you do not want to detail here)
It is quite late for the hammer rifles, maybe earlier locks used up? Possibly the Duke got a deal for the 3?

Huvius - as you say, less usual but there seems to be little consistency with front, rear or non bolted locks.

A Jones screw grip 10 bore rifle would be great for hunting deer here in Iowa. Rifles are, for the most part, are not allowed for deer hunting here. Unless of course the rifle is chambered for a 20 bore or larger shell.

That is a wonderful collection.. Unfortunately those sorts of guns in that condition are pretty few and far between in these parts...
