Need help identifying 1924 Oberndorf Large Banner Sporting
      #220480 - 29/11/12 03:51 AM

First post, hello folks, I have a 1924 (by proofs) Mauser Oberndorf with a large Banner I've never seen before. A gun acquaintance is proposing a trade and I'm not sure what she's worth. I'm very intrigued by the Banner as all I've seen are the smaller, more familiar banner, as are all examples I can find for sale. Any information greatly appreciated, gun is all original finish wise no drill or tap. It is a factory single trigger gun, with the small "GERMANY" stamped on the side of the buttstock, with lever release floorplate.

You may see another intermediate action with such a large Mauser banner on page 36 of Jon Speed's "The Mauser Archive".

Wish I had the book, and wish I knew the relative rarity of the large banner, thank you for the lead,

Angus

I suppose the large banner stamp is rare, but am not sure it gives your rifle any more value than a type B or C with the small banner stamp or no stamp on the front ring at all.
It is cool though and interesting in an of itself.
Does your rifle have a straight grip? Makes for a nice light rifle in 7x57.
I would definitely be interested if your deal falls through.

Thank you, no she's a pistol grip / conventional, 7lbs, handles beautifully. Decided against trading her away, it would have been towards an 1897 production factory custom Mauser C-96 pistol retailed by Westley Richards, decided to buy the C-96 all cash and improve my Mauser collection.
