Bore Rifle Book
      #218583 - 29/10/12 01:49 PM

A few days ago I had the pleasure of getting a copy of my good friend and fellow Alaskan Cal Pappas' new book, the British Bore Rifle, so I want to take this chance to make a shameless plug to my fellow bore gun afficiandos. Shameless because a few of my guns are in it (along with a lot of other fellows on this site)!

I just finished it last night and it truly is a worth while read for those interested in the biggest hunting guns ever made. About half of the 400+ pages is history and load info, hunting stories, etc, and the other half devoted to eye candy from 4-bores on down, way down. I've been interested in bore guns for many years, had the pleasure to own and hunt with a few, and there was a lot of information (particularly in the history section) that I'd never heard of before. As a result my reading list just grew a bunch as I now must research some more of the old Africa and India pioneers I just learned of.

I loved the old black and white photos of hunters with truly massive doubles. I can't imagine going on safari with 300lb of lead and 400lb of powder!

Cal is on NE so I'm sure you could PM him or contact him through his website calpappas.com if you want a copy.

Since I killed my old camera last week this gave me an excuse to try out the wife's. The book in appropriate surroundings:

I received my email from Cal yesterday, I'll be placing an order soon. I think Omnivorous_Bob has it wrong though...it's 2 Bore on down because Cal was kind enough to put two of my 2 Bore rifles in the Modern and Non-UK builders section.

Cal should pop in here and tell us about his book. I want to buy one too. Shameless plugs on the book readily accepted.

I am willing to buy a quantity and ship them over to Australia as one lot if it reduces postage/freight costs??? For any Aust NE members if interested.

I will see if Cal is interested and any savings can be achieved.

From Cal's website:

Ordering information:

The British Bore Rifle.........................$90
The .600 Nitro Express......................$35 when ordered with the BBR (full price is $70)

Shipping (pick one)
1) to US addresses:
one book media mail........................$8
one or two books priority mail.........$15
three or four books priority mail......$22
2) international addresses:
one or two books priority mail.........$52
three or four books priority mail......$67

So I'm guessing $52-$67/4=$35 per book is the potential international postage saving, less the cost of Aust postage, probably around A$12 for an express bag.

I've sent off an email to Cal to see if we can do this.

I'm going to order a minimum of four books from Cal.

If people get in early (Australia only), before I order, they can get in at cost, which will mean a saving of the postage of approx $20 if ordering a single book direct.

(So I'm guessing $52-$67/4=$35 per book is the potential international postage saving, less the cost of Aust postage, probably around A$12 for an express bag. $90 for the book. Approx $32 postage within Australia. US dollars. Will convert to A$ later).

Orders must be firm and must be paid when requested.

I plan to have some books for sale later (which will be at the Aussie landed price including full postage), or will use them for prizes and gifts on NE. So get in now for a group price.

Cal says they are selling quite fast and the printed number will sell out.

OK Al,

What I will do is order a minumum of four. Telephone Cal and pay for the order of four. Maybe bump it up in the next week if anyone else orders.

I want one for myself, and two for prizes on NE, so yours makes four. Edited to add: Received a PM from sbs, so that is added to the order as well. I want to buy the .600 book as well for myself so two boxes of four books will be ordered.

Hi Gents:
Thanks for all the positive comments here and all the great feedback on the book. Here some details on the book:

Chapter 1. 36 pages of history--users of the bore rifles in the vintage years.
Chapter 2. 21 pages of muzzle loading bore rifles, 14 rifles photographed.
Chapter 3. 37 pages of vintage ammunition, ballistics, reloading tools and moulds.
Chapter 4. 41 pages of 4-bores, 14 4-bores photographed.
Chapter 5. 61 pages of 8-bores, 27 8-bores photographed.
Chapter 6. 22 pages of 10-bores, 10 10-bores photographed.
Chapter 7. 39 pages of 12-bores, 12 12-bores photographed.
Chapter 8. 25 pages of 13-28 bores, 11 rifles photographed.
Chapter 9. 73 pages of the Bore Rifle Today: modern ballistics (11 pages), reloading (13
pages), shooting (10 pages), hunting (14 pages), where can I get...(17 pages), modern
history (9 pages).
Chapter 10. 34 pages of modern and non-UK bore rifles, 22 rifles photographed.

The books are 90$ each and for each BBR ordered a copy of the .600 NE is offered at 1/2 price or 35$.
The postage in an above post is correct, however Canada is lower than the international rates and I will charge accordingly as I don't make a profit from postage.
One note. I will drop the media mail for two reasons: complaints of 3-4 weeks delivery time and also slightly damaged corners of the book from being shuffled around the post for so long and the USPS won't pay an insurance claim for slight damage--only if severely damaged, lost, or destroyed.

Right now I don't have a plan for wholesale sales for a couple of reasons: the books are selling well as is, most of my profit is lost when old at wholesale (it cost a bunch to put this book together), and when I did so on the .600 book a few years ago, many folks would negotiate the quantity down to 4-5 books so they could have one at wholesale and sell a few to friends. However, I do know postage is high so friends can combine orders to one address (most so on international orders) so save this way.

Any questions, email me at <pappas@mtaonline.net>
Cheers, thanks, and enjoy the world of the British Bore Rifle!
Cal

What folks are saying about the British Bore Rifle:

The books came today. Extremely pleased with both! Very well put together books and I really like the high quality gloss paper. Thank you for taking the tine to put together these wonderful books, it must have taken a long time. Also thank you for signing both. I have already started to read the Bore Rifle book and I am really liking it.
Charlie H.

Your book has arrived.  And it was better than I could have imagined.I've written you a letter of thanks, but while I still have your attention, Thank you, my friend!  It’s a beautiful book.
Don W.

Hi Cal, Gary H. checking in with you today. I have some very good news to report. My Book came in is mornings mail. Life is good today. Boy, does it look great! I really like the heavy paper stock and all the color pictures in it. Great job in signing my book to me, very well worded and written. Later tonight, I will be able to sit down and go through it and do some serious reading. What a great edition to go along with my .600 Nitro Express Book. It looks like you have hit another Home Run with your new British Bore Rifle Book. Many Thanks Cal. All the very best to you. Bye for now. Gary H.

Thank you for the two copies of "The British Bore Rifle."  What an incredible job you did on this.  It is the encyclopedia for all those interested in these rifles.  It will be some time before I have explored it all.  The photos are uniformly excellent, and what a fantastic variety you have uncovered over the years. George H.

The book will be a collectors item for sure. Will G.

I read most of the book last night. I loved the history section; lots of new info I hadn't heard before. Rob S.

And you, too, will be pleased with the work! I’m home mose evenings for phone orders and email orders are placed anytime. Don’t forget about the discounted rate for the .600 NE book!
Cheers, all, and thanks for the kind words.
Cal

I think I will close this now so we get the order in.

Kamilaroi, if you are ordering four books, 2 of each, it may be cheaper to order direct and not have to pay Aussie postage as well - ie one box of $67.

Let me know asap if you want to do it direct.
