I would guess it is a "Special Bond" squib load ... probably not even with a projectile, just 'smoke and mirrors' ...

Looks like he fired his left barrel first! Dunno if that's good for regulation.
Course maybe he already touched off the right and this was an insurance shot.
Anybody know what or who he is shooting at?

That's certainly a blank or, as one would expect of Bond (James Bond), his physical make-up is that of steel bar anchored in cement. For this shot anyway ... no apparent sign of recoil.

For those of you who might be interested in a bit of trivia behind the gun itself, it used to belong to Stuart Anderson Wheeler when he was a professional hunter in Tanzania and Botswana – I don’t think it made it to Cameroon, where he also hunts. So this gun wasn’t off-the-shelf, but has several elephant and buffalo to its history. The gun’s a box lock with the Anderson Wheeler house scroll on a coin finish, with a Turkish Walnut stock. I used to handle the rifle on a regular basis and it’s nice to see 007 carrying it around now. Anyone coming through London should come and see us in Mayfair, and see what other guns we have in the vault.

Anderson Wheeler 500 Nitro Express Double Rifle photo © Anderson Wheeler
James Bond (Daniel Craig) uses an Anderson Wheeler 500 Nitro Express Double Rifle with box lock in SkyFall. The movie's armourer acquired the rifle from London based gun and rifle maker Anderson Wheeler. The request was for a gentleman’s big game hunting rifle, also known as a 'double rifle'. Anderson Wheeler provided a 500 Nitro Box Lock Express Rifle, which loads a .50 calibre round that fires a 570 grain bullet at around 2,200 feet per second. This rifle is ideally used as a stopping rifle and is usually carried by professional hunters or hunters in search of African Dangerous game. Bond will probably use it to hunt some villains and henchmen during the scenes filmed in Scotland. The rifle can also clearly be spotted on the cover of Bond on Set: Filming SkyFall, where Bond holds the rifle, standing next to his Aston Martin DB5 and wearing a Barbour jacket.
The Anderson Wheeler Express Double Rifle is building a reputation as the professional hunters' choice for its reliability, accuracy and overall good looks. The box lock ejector is hand engraved with a traditional Anderson Wheeler house scroll with a coin finish. The open sights are fitted with an integral quarter rib consisting of three folding leaves on the rear sight. The front sight comes with a 4mm ivory bead that can be flipped over the 2mm silver bead under poor light conditions or close quarters. The hand rubbed, oil finished, stock and for end are made from carefully selected exhibition Turkish walnut, crafted to fit the clients’ personal specifications to ensure balance and a perfect fit.
The exact same rifle as used by Bond in SkyFall can be custom ordered at Anderson Wheeler for approximately £15,500 ($24,500).

Just saw the movie, best bond movie ever.
it`s funny they gave him a doublerifle, even more funnier that it`s a 500NE, of all the things. but i am glad they did.
cuz when i get my krieghoff 500NE that i have orded, i can say it`s the same type of gun and caliber as james bond used in skyfall hehe.

Looking forward to seeing this movie as well. Lots of hype and PR about it but no negative reviews so looking good. Lovely to see a well made double rifle in a classic calibre from a smaller maker being used in a modern movie.

The Anderson Wheeler press release (I received this I believe back in September in the rush to prepare for my trip and missed posting it):
A New Rifle in MI 6’s Armoury, At her Majesty's Service
Anderson Wheeler of London’s, Mayfair are proud to have supplied one of their fine box lock double express rifles for the defence of the realm in the up and coming James Bond film, ‘Skyfall’.
The rifle is chambered in the mighty 500 Nitro express, built to embody many of the qualities normally associated with the man himself; classic taste and style coupled with a no – nonsense approach to getting the job done. This rifle is building a reputation as the Professional hunter’s choice, for its reliability, accuracy and overall good looks
The box lock ejector is hand engraved with a traditional Anderson Wheeler house scroll with a coin finish The open sights are fitted with an integral quarter rib consisting of three folding leaves on the rear sight. The front sight comes with a 4mm ivory bead that can be flipped over the 2mm silver bead under poor light conditions or close quarters.
The hand rubbed, oil finished, stock and forend are made from carefully selected exhibition Turkish walnut, crafted to fit the clients’ personal specifications to ensure balance and a perfect fit.
The thick recoil pad, articulated front trigger and a centralised weighting make this rifle a pleasure to shoot and easy to handle.
The rifle used in the film is a derivative of a round designed in the 1890s. This vintage big game calibre made an unshakable reputation across Africa, particularly throughout the British colonies. Its proper name is the 500, 3 inch, Nitro Express.
