Thoughts on Heym SR20 Trophy?

I'm considering one in 270 for one of my sons. I know this rifle was marketed by Mauser as the 2000/3000 but to me it looks like the Heym is better finished (especially the Trophy, which has quarter rib, classic stock design, octagon barrel, etc.).

Anyone have good or bad comments about them?

Hello,

I have several rifles of the mentioned type:
Mauser 4000 in .222 Rem
Mauser 2000 (?) in 9,3x64 and 8x68S
Heym SR10 in 9,3x64

All of these have the unique safety (pushing down for "fire", pushing up for "safety").
The safety seems to block the firing pin.

Precision was tested for the Mauser 4000 in .222 Rem, Mauser 2000 (?) in 8x68S and the Heym SR10 in 9,3x64 and was excellent for all three rifles:
5 shots below 20mm at 100 meters with handloaded ammunition were obtained with all rifles and even better in .222 with several loads.
Trigger pull is good at about 1000 grams to 1400 grams and crisp.

The position of the front trigger (set trigger configuration) is not the best for small hands, but manageable.
I do not know whether Heym in Germany has standard triggers for replacement of set triggers.

The action is a push-feed, not a controlled round feed.
The ejector mechanism is a spring loaded pin in the bolt head, the extractor is a spring loaded claw.

Wood is normally in the standard configuration, for the upgrade I have no information available.

I use the .222 as a training rifle and for fox and raven hunting, the 9,3x64 Heym SR10 would be a nice rifle for Africas plains game as it is a reliable weapon.

I can recommend these rifles, although spare parts are not easily to obtain.

The safety on this SR20 is different than the one I've seen on the 2000/3000/4000 (and maybe the early SR20's used that type). I think the "Trophy" was introduced around 1989 so maybe that explains the difference.

I'm a fan of controlled-round feed and would much prefer 7mm or 30-caliber over 270, but this is a nice looking rifle for the money...combines modern action and classic looks. This isn't the actual rifle I'm considering, but same caliber, configuration, and condition.

And now I'm running into a new issue...having trouble locating scope bases for the SR20; got a call into NECG but the guys I need are out. If anyone has a cross-reference for bases that will fit (beyond the Mauser 2000/3000/4000) I'd appreciate it.

Have you thought about Conetrol mounts/rings.

Yes, but they don't appear to be readily detachable. I'd like to have easy access to the irons.

What's not to like. I have an SR 20 classic - the same rifle as per the pictures save for a normal round barrel, no quarter rib and no open sights. Mine's in 243 and left handed. Had it for 15 years and can't see any reason to change it. Three shots touching is the norm. I have had to rezero three times during the fifteen years. Once when I changed a 4x32 Zeiss to a 6x42 Meopta and then recently when i upgraded that to a 4-12x50 Swarovski.

I have a couple of LH Mauser 2000 rifles and both of mine wear EAW mounts, which are QD. If you are not familiar with them, they are excellent mounts, adjustable for wear and externally adjustable for windage and elevation. Talley have blank scope bases for custom fitting. You might want to consider that route as well.

The EAW mounts are what I'm probably going to get...I feel like I got a great deal on the rifle so I can justify their asking price. Looking at mounting a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and it should make for a pretty good all-round rifle (though I'd still rather have it in 30-06, 7x57, or 7x64!).

If you don't need the extended front pivot you should be able to order a set that sit lower. The use of the extended front pivot (necessary for short tube scopes) do sit a little high. The other feature of their rings is that the 1"/26 mm rings will fit both tube sizes, which is handy if you find a nice German/Austrian scope with a 26mm tube.

You might also check whether Recknagel also make mounts for that model. They are somewhat similar to EAW mounts.

Nice rifle BTW.

I've neglected this topic for awhile so let me get caught up in a hurry: Bought the rifle (for middle son) and mounted Talley bases. Had the local 'smith reduce length of pull to a more manageable 13.5" and install a traditional looking orange Pachmayr pad. Found a great deal on closeout Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 scope and mounted it in Talley QD rings. Sighted in with cheap 150-grain soft nose ammo and took the boy hunting.

He bloodied it the first time out, taking this little sow on a Good Friday pig hunt. Seems to be a really good rifle...I'd probably pick up another if I could find one.
