8 bore or maybe even a 4 bore single rifle build
      #212064 - 04/07/12 11:18 PM

Hello all.

Quite a number of years ago I had the idea to build a big single shot bore rifle. I put some serious thought into it, put some ideas and sketch's down on paper and all, but then life got in the way and the project was shelved and eventually forgotten about.

Then, after reading AkMike's NT Buff post and seeing Omnivourous Bob's impressive results with his mighty 4 bore, I believe the bug has bitten again.

Some years ago Century Arms in Victoria (John Saunders) built a break barrel 4 bore. Does anyone have any photos or details of that rifle they would care to share? The finished rifle was written up in the "Australian Outdoors" magazine (I think). Does anyone have a copy of the article they could scan and send. That actual rifle is for sale at the moment but the photos on the ad are small and lack the detail I'm looking for.

Photos of any other big single barrel bore guns/rifles would be much appreciated as well. Photos give ideas, perspective and proportion.

I'm not sure if I want a break barrel or a falling block yet, but thats a minor detail as I can make either.

I'm just in the initial ideas stage at the moment, but any help here would be great.

Just trying to scratch the itch

Many thanks

Best
ALEX

Alex

I think I have a photo somewhere of the bore but
I just looked for it and can't find it on my computer.

I'll have a look when I get another chance.

The 4-bore REWA Alex refers to. This is the small advert. picture Alex mentioned.

Alex,

If you make a 8-bore I reckon a double is better. However a 4-bore is too big, so as you are aiming a single is better.

I may have some pics somewhere, but would have to look for them on several PCs. My main one is temporary out of action.

Alex,

Here's a link to the 2 Bore Jones Underlever I built for a customer a couple years ago:
2 Bore Jones Pictures
There is a link at the start of the post that will take you to my website and the 5 pages of detailed documented build.

Here's a link to the current Big Bore Project I am working on:
Video build Log of 2 Bore Jones Underlever Side by Side
If you go clear back to the beginning there is about 7 hours of video documenting my current project.

Hope this helps.

It might be a bit light-on for donkeys, Alex. But we'll give it a try, anyway.

Century Arms built more than one, but I'm not sure what the number was. Might have been a pair?

The one advertised on ozgunsales is listed by Zero Sports Manufacturing in Springvale, which was founded by Fred Klimek. It would not amaze me if Fred had had a lot to do with building these guns, and I believe he's still around. Should still be contactable through the shop, which his son Anthony runs now [Anthony's diving shop shares the premises].

There are some detail photos on the Century Arms website, http://www.centuryarms.com.au/docs/4bore.html

Edit: Dive shop website [shares phone number with The Shooters Shop] http://www.springvaledivecentre.com.au/

Let's see, 8 bore, 4 bore, 2 bore, hmmmm. I think (know) they ALL kick too much for me.

I'd think a good 10 bore rifle would be about tops (for me)for a round ball gun.

Alex, drop a PM to Omni-Bob here for detailed pics of his bore rifles. I'm sure he'd help out for a project of this scope. If no answer then PM me and I'll give you his email. He's a top notch guy.

Hi Alex,
There was an article about the Century Arms 4 Bore Rewa Rifle in The Australian Shooters Journal in Oct 96, if you are interested I can scan a copy and send it to you.
Thanks and good luck with the project

Hello Alex,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I have emailed you the scans at your work email-I couldn't work out how to post pics here.
Please let me know if you haven't received them.
Kind Regards

You might want to talk to Rolf Baknick (spell?) who I believe worked as a smith at Century Arms.

Saunders also made (in JV with Wal Winfer) a number of large falling block action rifles in various cals to 600 NE. The remaining stocks of actions and barrels were sold off only a few years ago.

A few years back there was an article in a UK mag that featured someone who was building 4 bore double rifles and had options for matching smooth bore barrels. I think I might have a copy of that article somewhere.

Some years back I looked into bore rifles and determined an 8 bore was the max that I could possibly handle.

Here is a nice 8 bore double:

I have a Greener 8 bore ball gun. it is actually a true 7 at .91 caliber and I need thin extruded brass cases any ideas? I understand Imperial of Australia made some years back. All I can find now are turned brass. I can not properly seat a ball. I am afraid the second ball will end up half way down the bore. What do you intend to use for brass and a mould?

I have a Greener ball gun also. Rocky Mountain can make you a case that works. You may need a die to turn in the case mouth. What are the specifics on your Greener?

I dont have the Greener in front of me but Its 18.25 pounds 3.25 inches across the breach . top lever made as one of a pair started in 1881 and finished in 1884 .91 caliber and the chamber is for a paper thin case. I have cases made by ballard but they are too thick. I end up seating the ball on top of the wadding with a malet for single round firing. I would like to shoot a beast with this monster.
Thanks for the info and I will contact Rockey Moutain when I get off the boat.

That's a heavy 8 bore or even a 7 bore gun! It's only a few pounds lighter than a 4. The Greener I have here is a top lever gun as well and has the cross bolt. Why don't you post some photos when you get a chance and the barrel proofs.

A slightly undersized ball which fits the case, but held in a cupped wad might be the answer for your problems. The wad will 'take' the rifling and spin the ball while holding it in the centre of the bore. See the 10 (or 8 bore) ammo cuttaway picture in Greener's book, "The Gun" and it's Development 9th Edition.
This undersized ball system doesn't work in all guns, but is certainly worth trying.

I guess you can still use your cup method? This is a smoothbore "ball gun" I believe.
