The Chamber that grew while in the gun locker...
      #210975 - 16/06/12 03:46 PM

Tonight I was talking to Bill in Oregon via Email and told him I was getting ready to shoot the .577 2-3/4 NE for the first time next weekend. I got the gun from him a few years ago as an unfinished project.

Bill wrote me back and said, the Chamber is 3"!

What!!!!!!!!!!

Ran out to the shop and measured the chamber---yep 3". Damn!

Well now I have to buy some more brass and another set of dies!!!

Anybody have a need for 10 rounds of Bertram 2 3/4" NE, formed but not fired brass and a set of CH4D dies!

There may be no need for the 3" dies. Try sizing the 3" cases after firing them and see how they chamber.
Your pressures probably wont be high enough to expand the base to any degree that would need full length sizing unless the new brass won't chamber all the way and you need to size them prior to the first loading.

I just checked Buffalo Arms website and with a bit of luck, I could have the new brass and dies here by Wednesday. Or I could get up early Monday Morning and drive the 280 miles and 4 1/2 hours across the mountains to their warehouse and pick them up.

I'll just order them and hope they get here in time for me to load them up and take the to the Alberta Victorian Rifleman Shoot.

I hope brother Murphy has had his fun.

I also broke a the shell holder for the my WR Carbine No. 1. Fortunately I have 40 round still loaded up of that ammo, that will work for the match.

That is certainly what I would have done, if the new 3" actually chamber OK and don't need the bases sized down first.

Some straight cases FL sizer dies are open at the top, allowing longer cases to be sized perfectly, or almost - much depends on the die design themselves.

Hey Douglas slow down. I will send you some brand new 3" 577NE brass shells and try using the shorter dies.

Joel,

Thank you very much!

I will give it a try and we will see.

I have all this time been learning all about the 2 3/4 NE and now I have a week to learn about the 3 inch. Time to crack the books.

Anyone have any suggested loads for 650 grain lead bullets in the 3 inch case?

Hey Douglas don't complain about chambers that have grown. Don't forget my double rifle grew from 500/450 into a .500 BPE.

The replacement brass did not arrive until Thursday when I was packing the truck. Out of time for loading, so I shot a .297/230 Morris Francotte instead. When I fired the first shot everyone yelled at me to cease fire because they thought I had a squib fire.

The sound of the action was louder than the round going off

Let me chime in to say I also think the existing dies should work.

As for the sizer, the base of the two rounds is exactly the same. Only question is whether it will accommodate the extra 1/4". It probably will, and should be very easy to find out.

The expander and seater will certainly work.

Finally, if you need rid of the short brass, I'm a candidate. It certainly will work in my A. Henry .577 2 3/4" BPE.

Your Martini looks like a nice project and a fun gun. Seems odd that rifles and clothing act in different ways. Your rifle chamber got bigger while in the closet. My clothing seems to shrink while in the closet!

Cheers,
Curl

I'll pm you about the brass.

The new brass is 3" .577 Bertram. It does not fit the chamber unsized. Full length resized in the 2-3/4" dies it just barely fits. The brass is a touch tight in the head area but can be finger pushed in the chamber. I will need to get a 3 inch set of dies.

I seated a bullet in the case and tried to chamber a round. Would not go in all the way. At first I thought it was because bullet shape was wrong or no throat. After some checking,it looks like the neck with bullet seated is to large. Thick case walls

I went gopher hunting today and shoot over 500 rounds (Gophers 57, DD 483) and I am to tired to mess with it tonight.
