A cutaway henry falling block
      #208823 - 23/05/12 09:16 PM

I found this one tonight. I can point you in the right direction if anyone's intersted.

An unusual .450/577” New South Wales Alexander Henry armourers cut away service rifle for instructional purposes. The Henry falling block action struck to the right side with WRA&A Co 1871 for manufacture by Westley Richards (the WR strangely stamped upside down). The left side engraved HENRYS PATENT cut away to show the movement of the block in the frame when the loading lever is operated. The extractor fork missing / broken off. Henry military lock fitted to the left side of the stock is engraved ALEXr HENRY with the wood to the top of the lock cutaway to show the internal mechanism of the lock. Walnut stock with regulation iron furniture is stamped to the right side with NSW NE 106 for issue to the New South Wales forces in Australia. Birmingham proofed Henry rifled barrel has been cut down to 20” with the fore end reduced accordingly. The top of the barrel to the front and rear of the ladder rear sight is cut away to show the rifling and the chamber area of the rifle. Purchased by the New South Wales Government to re arm their troops after it became apparent that Martini Henry rifle would not be available from the Ordnance for some years the rifle was that offered by Henry for the British Trials. Only the barrel of which was finally adopted by the British army. This regulation rifle has been converted to make a demonstration piece to show the soldiers and more importantly the armourers who maintained them how the rifle actually worked. In good condition for a class room demonstrator with fair bore, some pitting to the exterior and good mechanical order. An interesting gun and a piece of colonial history, cut away Henrys are rarely seen on the market.
