Martini trigger pull
      #208709 - 21/05/12 11:55 PM

I took the Greener 577-500 out this weekend and she shot okay for the first trip. Two problems cropped up. Sometime in the past the blade on the front sight has been snapped off and replaced with a shotgun bead tapped into the old sight. It covers about 14" at 100 yds. I'll have to try and buy another correct blade sight or have one made. The second thing is the absolutly horrible trigger. It feels like it has 1/2" creep and then I almost have to use two fingers to pull it the rest of the way. I read somewhere that not much could be done with martini triggers. Is this true? If it's not true, can a competent gunsmith make this rifle a joy to shoot instead of a workout?

Casper,

Seems like yours has been messed with sometime in the past. To answer your question, yes, they can be remedied - but it takes a person well versed in Martini intricacies to do it right. a 2-pound trigger should be possible. However, if ones doesn't know what one is doing, it is pretty easy to mess it up - like getting the sear angle wrong.

Both my Greener 12 bore rifles had triggers like yours, the local gunsmith cleaned them up to a nice crisp 2 1/2 pound, now all I have to deal with is the recoil.

Casper,
I do a lot of Matini trigger jobs and it is entirely possible to get them nice and crisp, but as belgmart said, the smith has to know the correct procedure. Not only do the sear engagement angles have to be correct, but the sear position also determines where the breech block sits when open.
I'd happily do the job for you, but I'm a little too far away.

Find a gunsmith who has worked with this type of trigger. Someone who knows Remington rolling blocks would understand this trigger.

Any good single shoot gunsmith should be able figure out the trigger and how it works.

I would talk to John Taylor or David Kaiser.

Is the big action similar to the Cadet in trigger function?

I managed to get my Cadets down to a nice pull, but it's easy to screw it up and have an unsafe trigger.

Yes, it's exactly the same principle, just bigger.
