Three today
      #206786 - 08/04/12 10:36 PM

Went out to the station for a look today bumped a group of sows and took two with the 223. Went to another spot and followed a creek on a floodplain found a croc kill , or what was left of it. A cow in a small pool of water. Hunted on keeping Mak away from the creek, a small boar stood up from a wallow. Got Mak to sit and smacked him with a 225 hydro out of the 338, over kill but wanted to see how they performed. Boar dropped with out a kick. Entry just in front of his shoulder and exited behind the off side shoulder. Cant wait to try them on larger boars and buff.
Mak is starting to show a bit of interest in the pigs. See how he goes tomorrow. heres some pics Mick

Nice mate.
My father used 225 grain Hydro's in his 338 wm on Africa with great results.

WOW - those scales are huge, like a carp with a trout or bass's mouth and teeth, I assume. Good eating?

The locals think they (saratoga - bottom one) are great eating Darryl... most soft whitey's let them go. Great fun to catch though. Barramundi of course is very good to eat.

Is the 'dry season' upon you Mick? Almost time for me to make the long drive north!!

They are great fun on a lure and I have eaten them too but Barra is easier all around.

Good work again Mick.

Either look like they'd be a blast on a fly rod, 8 to 9 weight on that Barramundi.

Daryl- I target the Saratoga on fly, generaly use a 8wt Sage. during the middle of the day I use whistler style flys in 3/0 on the drop and tight against cover or weed banks. The take on the drop is usualy gentle. The fight is different to most fish with a lot of tight turning circles then short runs. They have a hard mouth and are hard to keep hooked.
The other style of fishing for them is with surface flys ,gurglers, dalhbergs, cast into the lillys or thick surface vegetation. Weed guards are a necesity.
The toga will burst after the fly even before it hits the water, the take is usualy brutal and they head for cover vary quickly. Great on fly.
The colours that work on the Togas are the brightest you can tie. I tie a whistler style called a fruit salad, that is my favourite.
I release mine as I prefer salt water fish for eating.
Heres some more pics Mick

3/0 Fruit salad 8wt
3/0 gurgler 8wt

whistler style flies. top crimson tide, pink thing, fruitsalad pink colar instead of green.
mid-black/barred, rainbow clouser, chartuse thing.
bottom- Spinster, surfcandy, deciever.

All of those would work on Steelhead in one water or another. The spinner isn't necessary and might cause undue drag on the fly. Of course, much depends on the water type. A very slow tailout for a wide slow swing would work with the spinner, just as it does for surface patterns.
There are only a few instances where a flyrod catches less than tackle - here.

Hey Mick... we get jumbo toga out on the gulf side - I will post a separate thread here when I get a chance. Toga are awesome fish on a fly (or lure)...

Daryl, I caught a few Barra on a fly on my trip to Darwin 5 years back, one decent one of about 7lbs on a Loomis 9wt, it was a hoot. I also cast a big plug to a saltwater croc of about 12 feet, he took it and towed us around for 5 minutes before spitting it, I still have the lure here in my office with the holes through it; the guide, a lovely bloke called Lennie, was going bonkers, "DonŽt let that fu****g croc anywhere near my boat you mad pommie bast**d" being one of the milder quotes...still makes me laugh, best

HA! Made me laugh, too, Mike. I can just about hear him. So many trips to make once Tracy retires. One is to the UK.

What an offer! I'll MOST certainly keep that in mind.

Count on it.

Thankyou, Mike, from the bottom of my heart.
