"Day of the 9.3's"
      #197147 - 18/12/11 04:53 PM

Had a good mate from school call in for the morning on his way home from work.
He wanted to go pig chasing as we used to do all the time.

Here he is on my 4 wheeler with "Duke".

By fatboy404 at 2011-12-17

It is still bloody wet here at the moment and we got very wet chasing pigs flat out through the water.
we only got 8 pigs but had a ball.
He was using my Zastava 9.3x62 loaded with 320 grain Woody RN.
This is the only bullet he got back and the pig it was recovered from.

Another pig in the mud.

By fatboy404 at 2011-12-17

Couple of my mates pigs. He is going to join NE this week as well.

By fatboy404 at 2011-12-17

By fatboy404 at 2011-12-17

I was using some 286 grain Hydro's left over from my Cape York trip.
Here is a sow I shot on the run in the timber.
Nothing more than a gut shot but check out the blood loss for a solid and it exited.

The other "upside" is that my mate said he couldn't believe how nice the Zastava was to shoot considering full loads with the 320's.
He is ordering one this week.

I look forward to him being on NE in the future as we have been mates for 26 years.

Awesome, great photos.

The mud does kind of get on the guns a bit when chasing pigs ! LOL

It is what I keep saying about pigs and goats "end on" being able to stop some big lead from pretty big calibers.

They will hang onto 338's,9.3's,375's and my 404j a lot of the time and yet the same loads on scrub bulls are under the skin on the other side or exit.

Well pork is the closest to human flesh in consistancy so it is no wonder military calibres were 6.5mm and 7mm with big SD's and then to .30 and 8mm.

Neale I can see why you wanted a synthetic stocked rifle as a knockabout rifle.

If it gets any wetter out there you will need one of those fan powered flat bottomed skifs that are used in the Everglades.

Funny you should say that !.

Two things my mate said to me while doing warp speed through the water was,
"This bike doesn't have a snorkel you know" & "It's not a bloody hovercraft".

Pig chasing still does it for me.

Fatboy....what size Quads are you running? I was looking at getting one a while ago, something like the 500cc fuel injected model in the Yamaha. Makes carting critters out of the bush a lot easier.

Cheers

Good shooting mate!
I'm looking at an old open sighted 9.3 at the moment and if I acquire it I may set it up to shoot the 320grnes as I've got plenty of them.
Neale, Do you think the rain made it down to Brewarrina?

Neale,

How do you work your dog on the pigs?

Is he used to track them down and discover them? Or drive them out of cover? Or only after you have spotted the pigs is he let off the quad bike?

Never worked with pigs dogs before. And never pig sticking for example. We always did our own human pig dogging ...

I'm guessing the dogs add to your success by a multiple.

Being so wet we just rode around on my bike.
I just ride slowly through the timber and Duke smells them off the bike, jumps and goes and catches one. The pigs here are normally in mobs and run so I fly out of the Timber and look for the mob then cut loose.
I then find Duke and stick his pig for him. If he catches a really big boar I will go straight to him rather than chasing the mob.
When on the bike I use him for his nose, to find the ones that don't run.
If using him when on foot he just hunts about 30-50 yards out in front of me.
This is a good way to get some numbers and have fun as all the pigs want to do is get away from the dog at all costs. Normally they are running all around you and at you.
He now has caught 233 pigs at 2 years of age. A dog is less important with a bike but I love my dogs and will never leave them at home.

Whats 4.37mm ? .17 cal or .20 cal ?.
Are you sure you have enough gun on varmints as some people are using DR's in case it goes wrong.

They would be like our rabbits I guess when you shoot them with a 22-250. They sound like "hitting a bag of wheat with a cricket bat".

Used to love that sound with the swift and 250AI.

.172 is 4.37mm. I started off years ago, using a .220 Swift, then switched to a .17Ackley Bee as I wanted to see every impact, then .17Remington which shot this gopher in the picture - 380yards IIRC, to my current .17Ackley Hornet and .17HMR.

We use the rimfire .17Hornady's to 200yards - head and chest shots - bipods off tables or our quads boxes, and the centrefore .17's from there on out. Most of our CF shooting now is under 400yards at the farms/ranches we shoot.

There are rimfire areas as well, where the Ruger 10/22's with custom barrels and 25 round mags come into the fray. A 7 day 'shoot' is usually good for 1,000 to 1,500 gophers each. It's a lot more laid back than shooting them in the prairies, where 500 shots a day are the norm & the Alberta and Sask. rats are smaller, too.

So the main reason for the 17's is to be able to watch your shot.
They would be dearer to run and a prick to clean ?.

Re: "Day of the 9.3's" [Re: FATBOY404]
      #197329 - 20/12/11 10:20 AM

Actually they both are quite easy cleaning.

My CF has a Pac-Nor 9" twist, 3 groove barrel that needs cleaning about every 400 or 500rounds. I don't know which or if it actually needs it at 500, as I've not breeched 450 in a day's shooting and it is still shooting tiny groups &/or kiling rats at long range at that # of rounds. No metal fouling at all and Ed's Red takes out the powder fouling. My buddies .17AB that I chambered up with another, identical Pac-nor barerl is the same for clean shooting and accuracy.

We shoot all day with them then clean them back in camp while supper's cooking. Cleaning means patches with Ed's Red or when we're lazy enough, Wipe-Out into the bore and patch that out in the morning, then one of Ed's Red, 1 or 2 dry patchs and go shooting again.

The .17 Rimfires, both of which are Mosbergs, get cleaned same way, same time. I used a tight patch with JB compound when they were new - 20 strokes each way and neither picks up any metal fouling and they shoot well and clean easily. Gotta be careful with any abrasive with the bores as most .17's only have .002" rifling depth.

Seeing the impacts is a big thing with us and the reason for the .17's. It's especially good in the wind and longer range shooting. You can see the hit and get a second shot-hit where a .22/250 would let you down. I'm using BC .190 bullets at 3,925fps. They work quite well on gophers, or the 25gr. Vmax, BC about .235 at 3,640fps. They are flatter shooting than most commercial .224's and produce less drift as well.
Doubles and triples (1 shot, 2 or 3 gophers) are fun, but to get a triple I needed to use 25g.r Hornady HP's. The Vmax's break up too quickly for more than close doubles.

Being able to see the hits is enlightening.

That all makes sence Daryl.
450 rounds in a day is a lot of shooting !.

A gunsmith here who built my 9.3 said he likes the 3 groove Pac Nor as well.

Daryl_s that is a good bit of shooting and lots of it.

Being able to see your shot makes a lot of sence.
