The Last Day Kudu
      #188686 - 27/08/11 05:02 PM

Africa, the mere sound of the word congers up stories of Hemingway, Corbett, Taylor and after 50 plus years of waiting to go to Africa for a Safari, I finally made the decision to bite the bullet and contacted Chris Troskie of CT-Safaris where I advised Chris of my limitations and asked him was it going to be possible to have the ‘Safari’ experience to which Chris advised me that he works within the limitations of each client so a booking was made in April 2011 for an early August hunt.

After arranging all the necessary paperwork to export 2 firearms and ammunition, PBS medicine etc and all the little things that make up the Safari experience, on Tuesday 9th August 2011 it all began when I flew from Dubbo to Sydney where I stayed overnight before going to the International Terminal at 0700hrs Wednesday 10th August to have ‘Customs’ check that all was in order and after the mandatory security check I was ready to commence the 14hr plus journey to Johannesburg.

I always fly Qantas and this time I was seated in Premium Economy which was the only seats available on the required date but it was a pleasure to have the extended leg room and the meals were a lot better than Economy.

If I said the time flew by I would be lying but we arrived about 30 minutes ahead of time where I was met by the staff of ‘Hunters Support’ who collected all my checked baggage and whisked me through Immigration and then finally I was re-united with my Pelican Case in the SAPS Office where the serial numbers of the rifles were checked and once they were happy I was handed over to Chris Troskie and after the normal introductions we started a four hour trip to ‘Bloemfontein’ where we stayed the night ready for an early start the next morning to the first area to be hunted which was situated next to the Orange River near the town of Aliwal North.

The Orange River is the border between the Eastern Cape and the Free State but the property was actually in the Free State.

After settling in and checking the rifle for accuracy, we proceeded to start the hunt.

Day 1. 11/08/11

As most hunting is done in the morning and afternoon, we were in time to start our hunting in the afternoon on Day 1 which was to say the least an eye opener with the country side far different to that of Australia. The weather was quite pleasant with no jackets required but this would soon change.

Our first African species was the Zebra taken just after 1500hrs whilst running with Wildebeest, it was a nice male with not much damage to the hide and will make a very nice rug.

After taking the Zebra to the skinning shed we had a general look around and became more familiar to the lay of the land.

Day 2. 12/08/11

In the morning about 0930hrs we took a nice Springbok and in the afternoon a nice Blue Wildebeest at about 1700hrs. In the morning although cool a jumper was all that was needed but by the afternoon a jacket was required as well.

Day 3. 13/08/11

The morning saw us doing a lot of looking but with no real trophy animals seen, however the afternoon provided a change in luck with a nice Impala taken about 1450hrs and weather was pleasant and we were back to just a jumper.

Day 4. 14/08/11

Sunday saw us change hunting areas by 20-30 kilometers into the Eastern Cape but it was cold, real cold and the jumper and light jacket was replaced by a jumper and a heavy jacket and gloves etc but by 1030hrs we had got a nice Black Springbok.

Day 5 15/08/11

Although we had been looking for the very nice Waterbuck known to haunt this area for the last two days, today was the day that we found the stag that had been hunted by the last 4 hunters to this area to no avail. As we moved slowly forward, wind in our face and sun at our rear we approached the rock ledge which overlooked a grassy area with light scrub and close to the Orange River and there much to our Trackers surprise, there he was.

My guide Chris estimated the distance to be about 170 yards downhill so he set up the sticks ready for me to take the shot. After correctly finding the right one ( there was two ) Chris gave the instruction to shoot when I was ready. At the sound of the shot, the second stag stood up not knowing what had happened and although my stag was anchored a second shot was provided to ensure all was well.

Now considering a few facts, my inability to be a mountain goat and the fact nothing is left behind to go to waste, it was decided that it was best if I observed what was happening from above and Chris and the trackers do the honor and retrieve the trophy skull and hide along with the meat.

Day 6. 16/08/11

Today we went after Gemsbok which are both illusive and run like the wind if they see or get wind of a hunter. After a lot of work by the trackers we were able to take this one.

Chris, Myself & Mbuto

Day 7. 17/08/11

Saw us drive to the Eastern Cape to another property near the town of Steynsburg for the last 3 days of the hunt. We had been told of the possibility of getting a good size Black Wildebeest so it was worth the drive. On arrival we settled in and went for a quick look around ready for an early start the next day.

Day 8. 18/08/11

Before we had a chance to look for the Black Wildebeest we encountered a lovely Duiker which although not on the original list was to much of an opportunity to pass up and luckily I didn’t and it turned out to be a lovely 5” Duiker.

Day 9. 19/08/11

Today was the day of the Black Wildebeest which are elusive and tough. Although we started the hunt in the morning, it wasn’t until 1720hrs that our quarry was on the ground so with a bit of huffing and puffing the beasts carcass was loaded into the back of the ute for the trip to the skinning shed.

Day 10. 20/08/11

Being the last day of the hunt, I was beginning to get apprehensive as I really wanted to get a Kudu but the last 3 tries showed only females and younger bulls which was not our quarry. The property owner said that he has seen a couple of really good bulls over the last weeks but now they seemed to live up to their name “The Gray Ghost” as they could not be found.

Finally in the last hunting hours of the last day we finally found what we were looking for a very nice Kudu Bull where a heart shot put the trophy in the bag. When measured by the Taxidermist it measured 45” on both horns

It was some of the best moments of my life, I found all of the South African people I met very welcoming and helpful, I ate well and drank more than I normally do but hey, T.I.A. (This Is Africa)

If anyone is considering doing a Plains Game Hunt or in fact any African hunt, whether you’re a fitness freak or have a health problem like me I can assure you that Chris Troskie of
CT-Safaris will do all in his power to provide you with an enjoyable and productive hunt.

I hope you all enjoyed seeing my hunt as much as I have enjoyed showing you.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

You will be a happy man after that time away Jeff, nice to see the animals with the shots "up front" too.
It was worth the long wait eh!

I notice a bit of cultivation and perhaps an old pump shed in the "meat" pic,do you know what they had been growing there?

Hi Gryphon,

Not really sure as this was on the other side of the river and not on the property that we were hunting but it would be a fair guess that it might be lucerne as it was used a lot in the area, especially where I got the Kudu.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Jeff

You will have some fantastic additions for your trophy room for sure.

Isn't that usually the way, one of the most sought after trophies is near the end of the hunt. I like your kudu, it looks like a good representative bull. Very nice shape to its horns.

The black springbok too is very nice. I want one!

Congratulations on your first safari and glad you had a great time. Well done.

Hi Tophet1,

Thanks, It may not be the largest Eastern Kudu taken but I am very pleased with the results but he made us work for him. I guess you could say that ‘I am as happy as a pig in poo’ with him.

Hi Ben,

Thanks, “Son” got most of the work mainly because you never know what will ‘Pop’ up and most are suitable for the 30.06

Hi Afro408,

Thanks also, I am glad you liked the story as well.

Hi Fatboy404,

Thanks Neale, I am glad you like what you see. I used 180gn TSX behind 52gns of AR2209 and of all the animals taken, only one projectile was recovered in the typical ‘Petal’ design as this was unusual to me as all animals was butchered for meat.

As for next time your correct, it only takes money and if I can raise some I will go back for sure. I will do some more posts after I catch up a bit and get some rest as it was a ‘Hard’ 2 weeks, believe me but more than worth the effort.

Hi John,

Thanks, the Taxidermist says they will be ready to ship in about 3-4 months as he is a friend of Chris Troskie and the property owners where we hunted ( A bit of luck for me )

The Black Springbok was a difficult one in the Eastern Cape, long ranges.

Hi Mikeh416Rigby,

Your right there, a lot of good memories and photos to keep the dream alive and the trophies when they arrive.

Thanks Again Fellas,

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Jeff, what a fantastic trip! Looks like you hunted some wonderful areas of our country, and harvested some wonderful trophies. I am glad my countrymen treated you well. That is a lovely duiker, and a great Eastern Cape Kudu, lovely mature bull, with great worn horns, I hope that you come back soon.

Great pics by the way. Well done.

Regards.

Hi Powdersmoke,

Thanks for the compliments, they are truly wonderful trophies and Yes, your countrymen and women treated me with the up-most respect and the amount of coffee and cake that was dished up on our arrival to their properties was almost a meal in itself.

The Son of the property owner where the Kudu was harvested tried for three days before success was ours but the first thing I wanted to do after the photos were taken was to show his Dad who is in his seventies our success (Thanks Charlie)as he always made me feel like family whenever we visited. This impressed his Son when I explained why.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Hi Ben,

They were on my list but unfortunately there was none in the areas we hunted. Although I wanted one, I had to make a choice which made me change my mind which was not easy to do. I also wanted a Bushbuck but that also had to be left off the list or something else would have needed to be dropped.

Maybe next time if the hunting God's are kind to me.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

I'm glad you liked the photos. We share the same likes, I have my Gemsbok and Kudu looking at each other on Pedestal mounts with the Zebra Rug in front and the Black Wildebeest looking straight ahead also on a Pedestal Mount.

Cheers for now,

Jeff

Hi Alex,

Thank you for the kind wishes and comments. Although the .375H&H was ready for action, something that Fatboy404 said before I left came to reality, that is, 'Don't try and plan what rifle will be used on which animal' and he was correct.

I was going to use the .375H&H on the Zebra, Kudu and Wildebeest but as the hunting Gods (and Neale) will tell you, all does not always go to YOUR pre made plans and in all but one case the 30.06 was in my hands when the trophy was selected whilst I was after other game.

Although you can not see the spot, the Kudu was also a shoulder shot again with the 30.06 using the 180gn TSX ahead of 52gns of AR2209 so I guess the short answer was no, the .375H&H was not 'Blooded' this time.

It is very hard to pick which trophy is my personal best but I wanted a good representative example of various African Plains Game and the selection I made was what I felt would allow this unfortunately there were no Warthog in the areas which would have rounded it out for me.

The Waterbuck was very old and has nice thick bases although only 24" the Gemsbok was 33 1/2" the Eastern Cape Kudu 45" but the old Black Wildebeest and I mean old was 24 1/2" the remainder were.:

Duiker 5"
Blue Wildebeest 24 6/8"
Sprinkbok 13 1/2"
Black Springbok 10"
Impala 21 1/2"

So as you can see, you expert craftsmanship paid dividends and although these measurements were taken on 'Green' trophies they should be close and was taken by my Taxidermist, Cecil Henning of Umlindi Taxidermy.

So there you are and hopefully I may be lucky enough to 'Squeeze' in another trip to Africa, God and Finances willing before I croak it.

I will send some photos of "Father" and "Son" which were taken by Les O'Rourke for your customer "Brag" book shortly.

Until Then,

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

.

There is nothing like unfinished bussiness Jeff.

My Father did four trips to finally get his Bush Buck and what an animal he ended up with.

I like looking at your photo's and other people's hunts in Africa as it brings back great memories.

Have spent the last two hours going through my "Africa" photo's and dreaming. So thanks.

My Cape Buffalo mount is on a plane from Zim now and that was from April last year.
Things happen in "Africa time" for sure.

I will tell more later but I will never get trophies mounted in Africa again.
Slow and more expensive. Freight was about $5200 US for two mounted Buff, mounted Bush Buck,Hyena skull and Zebra shoulder mount.

congratulations

An impressive bag and real good trophies, that was for sure a first rate hunt.
I am amused at the concern about your rifles, I tend to think that 2 rifles are 2 sources of trouble but all in all they achieve their work
I wonder when after 6 hunts in Africa will I manage to shoot a kudu? or a waterbuck ? or a decent wart hog????
well done my friend

Great hunt, Jeff and you are a TRUE sportsman, too. I love the pix. Especially the fact that you are not afraid to stand close to the animal, not a hundred yards behind it to make the horns "grow"!

Great trophies and thanks so much for a great writeup. Really appreciate the account.

Hi Neale,

I will look forward to seeing the 'Unpacking' and 'Hanging' of those trophies as it is an exciting time.

You mentioned your Dads 4 trips to Africa to get his Bushbuck and what a Bushbuck it was, I guess we all have those dreams of certain animals we want to take in our lifetime and your Dad was lucky to have his dream come true.

You mentioned looking at photographs and the memories came streaming back of the hunt and the good times shared with Dad and hunt friends. This is one ability of humans to relive past events with memories which is so special, especially as one gets older.

So till later,

Cheers Mate,

Jeff
