9.5x57 MS 1st hunt

A few months ago I had the opportunity to purchase a 1910 MS take down in 9.5x57 as I had wanted a MS for some time I jumped at the chance. I recieved the rifle (including new dies) a few months later after a gunsmith friend replaced the deteriorating recoil pad and reshaped the damaged front bead he also made me up a expander die which necks 8x57 brass up to around .410 then I run the brass through the full length die and I have 9.5x57 brass that doesn't need to be fire formed the whole process is alot easier than I thought it would be. I made up some test loads using ADI 2206H starting at 43 grains and worked my way up to 48 behind 235 gr Speer and Woodleigh projectiles there was no real signs of encreasing pressure and I ended up settling on 47 grains. I couldn't wait to take this thing out in the field so as soon as I got a chance I went on a quick hunt a few hours west of Sydney to test her out on some goats. I managed to bump into a mob of nannies and kids and took 3 of them all shots were at less than 50m off hand using the speer projectiles I didn't manage to recover any of the speers and by the look of the exit holes I think I will need to use these on some heavier game to see them open up. It was a great day out in the bush with my new rifle I now can see why so many people love these short, light and great handling rifles from what the previous owner told me the gun had been sitting in a safe for around 8 years, that won't be happening with this owner I intend on giving it some real use.

9.5x57 would be my favourite if I had one instead of the .375/06IMP. We all love our 9.3x57's. That is a nice hunting rifle!

NSWHunter - your loads are very soft. I used that same powder in my 9.3x57, H4895 I believe it is called over here, with 48.5gr. and 270gr. Speers & they are barely making 2,300fps.

With the 220gr. and 225gr. Hornady's sized down to .367" and 232gr. .366" Norma Vulcans, I'm using 52.0gr. of H4895 - as well as 56.0gr. BLC2.

These loads were developed in a M46, which is a Model 94/96 action - the weaker of the Mauser actions. The 9.5x57 has a slightly higher expansion ratio than the 9.3x57, which means these loads are fully capable of being shot in your rifle.

The case web expansion was 0 from sized diameter of .466" (8x57RP) with all loads - literally showing no pressure signs at all. The velocity was good at 2,450fps with 232gr. and 2,550fps for the lighter bullets. They all shot into sub 1" at 100 meters off the bags.

As always stay safe and work up from below, watching for pressure signs.

The 220gr. Hornady FN meant for the .375Winchester and Marlin lever guns might be a better goat bullet. At lower velocities, Rod found the 235gr. Speer to be very tough acting - closely matching 300gr. Swifts from a .375 H&H in penetration and damage.

I'd think, unless run at 2,500fps or more, they'd be too tough for the smaller goats. The 225gr. Hornady SP should be wonderful in that case for such game - even Sambar - flatter shooting and better expanding as well. Since it has a thin nose and .062" base jacket, it should work well on a variety of game at such moderate speeds. Having the spitzer nose, should allow good feeding as well.

I bought the Speers because I thought they would be a little softer than the Woodleigh’s and perform a bit better on light game. On goats they hardly opened up at all I will try other projectiles in time I wanted to try some of the 220 - 225 projectiles but was under the impression that it’s hard to get ammo to feed correctly unless they are round or semi round nose in shape. I will have to invest in a chronograph to see what kind of velocity these loads produce.

That's beautiful country alright and it's nice to see an un-scoped old classic being put to good use.

Could you please show the rifle taken down? I can see a hand screw on the right hand side of the forearm, but where is the rest of the mechanism?

BTW the forend "latch" is a tapered pin c/w leaf spring arrangement. The action/mag mechanism is "different".
