Locks and Bores?
      #187429 - 06/08/11 06:41 AM

Out of interest, not for a project.

Can any lock be used to build the larger rifles? Say from 8 to 4 bore.
Just mainly looking at these ones:

CVA KENTUCKY FLINTLOCK AND PERCUSSION
T.GIBBON'S HAWKENS LOCK L&R
CVA PENNSYLVANIA & FRONTIER FLINTLOCK & PERCUSSION
CVA HAWKEN FLINTLOCK & PERCUSSION
PEDERSOLI KENTUCKY FLINTLOCK & PERCUSSION

Cheers,
Troy

Troy - I'd check tackofthewolf.com for locks - of the English variety.

I would NOT use an Italian lock. I've never seen one that appeared to have been made well. They were all very rough inside and needed too much work to make work properly, ie: CVA or Pedersoli. The L&R locks are quite good - I have several and they all suit me just fine - flint or percussion.

If making a large single in flint in earlier style, the large Queen Anne rounded lock plate would work nicely, I think. There are several that would "fit" the subject.

Take a look at http://www.flintlocks.com/ and click on the LOCKS button.

TKS Tom - I forgot about the Chamber's locks - for some odd reason. Jim's locks are wonderful, right out of the box and probably the best buys in flintlocks there are. They come tuned and faster firing than about any other production or semi-production lock. As a rule, I've had good luck with L&R & Davis locks but they do need some work, sometimes- as in annealing overly hard frizzens or springs. Jim's locks don't need any 'help' and are perfect as received.

Jim Chambers and daughter Barbie are also wonderful to deal with - I'm delighted to call them friends.

I can thoroughly recoment the Jim Chambers locks! They work,as Daryl-S has said, straight out of the box. And Jim always gives you his personal attention in the case of any queries.First class people to deal with!!
Chris.

Another source for good locks is Danny Caywood. http://www.caywoodguns.com/locks.htm
