Hi, John -

Hadn't seen that article in quite awhile...thanks for resurrecting it.

I've been shooting my .338-06 for almost 25years now and it (LITERALLY) has not failed me yet.

Most of the game taken with this rifle have been whitetails. ALL OF THEM have dropped to the shot!

My largest deer to date was taken with this rifle with a 250gr Sierra BT. This deer was right at 150-yards, slightly quartered-on when the Sierra hit EXACTLY between two ribs (on the on-side) and just barely knicked a rib going out. But this buck hit the ground - HARD! BTW, after field-dressing, this buck weighed in at 286-pounds.

While I have taken maybe too much game with too many other calibers, I can honestly say that I only needed the .338-06.

I also am fond of the 338-06
I have owned 3 of them, and I have made about 25 others. Every man and woman I have ever made one for has loved if. In fact a few have said they could not believe HOW MUCH they were impressed by it
It's one of those wonderful combinations that just seem to work better then expected.

Thanks for that article John!
I think my .338-06 was built in the late 1980's (I need to look at the receipt for the RCBS dies).
It really is a very impressive and underrated cartridge!
It kind of harps back to the British Nitro cartridges and their ???grain bullets, at 2400 to 2500fps.
Lot a critters been killed with them Nitro cartridges so no need for me to say any more on this!

My current interest is another similar (velocity) performer.
It's the Soviet M43/7.62 x 39 cartridge. It also pushes its 125gr bullet at 2400fps but I have been experimenting with bullets of 150, 170 and 180grain weight.
I have also been reloading some of these heavy weight bullets at subsonic velocities, using ADI/IMR Trail Boss powder, through the 22" barrel of my Norinco 701 (a Chinese copy of the Win pre 64 M70) bolt action rifle.

Great read on the 338-'06. I seriously considered this cartridge (and the 35 Whelan) before selecting 9.3x62 to be "the other half" of my 30-'06 takedown.

More impressive was that a lengthy article was published in a national magazine that was informative and didn't try to sell you something from one of the major advertisers...probably not uncommon when this was published, but a far cry from what I'm used to seeing these days.

I have been impressed with Finn's writing for many years. Sad to have him pass, but we all go, sooner or later.

Most intersting were his articles on African hunting and shooting. The big article where he compares the effectiveness of various ctgs. putting them into 'groups' of killing powder - from OBSERVED effects on numberous animals was especially impressive. That people keep trying to get another 50 or 100fps from a .375H&H is interesting as according to the animals, it takes a lot more than that case can provide to make any difference whatesover. We do need confidence in our loads, though - our 'saving grace' from reality, perhaps.

Yes, he was one of the great writers - along with Elmer.

The .338/06 was/is a good round - now a proprietry round, SAAMI rated at 65,000PSI.

Load a .35 Whelen to the same pressure and you get get even better ballsitics with same wieght or identical ballistics with identical sectiona density, slightly better in the larger calibre - include a .375/06 and the same thing happens again. That's physics for you.

Nice article - enjoyed reading that. There's a Safari Press book due out later in the year "GUNS AND HUNTING - Two Decades of Thoughts on Guns and Calibers" which might be worth checking out if you can stomach Safari Press prices and so-called limited first editions of books previously published elsewhere...
Not sure if this will be a re-release of his earlier "Finn Aagaard on hunting rifles & cartridges", anyone know?

There is an excellent audio book of Finn Aagaard telling his life story and adventures too. Well worth listening to. The man himself is the speaker.

I've had the good fortune to meet and become friends with Berit Aagaard and her new husband Bill Pace. Had the chance to shoot his famous .375 M 70 at the range and hear her stories of taking buffalo # 50 with the rifle about a year ago. You should see her shoot left handed at our big bore get-togethers at the local range!
