Current producers of kipplauf rifles?
      #170573 - 30/10/10 06:17 AM

I'm looking for a new, or secondhand, kipplauf with jägerverschluss.

Are there any gunmakers making "working-gun editions" of these rifles today?

I'm not very keen on a Blaser etc.

Merkel is made with kipblock locking, some models are with steel receiver. Which caliber?

7x57R is the most desireable.

Merkel is also a "modern" make..

A gunsmith made one is what I'm looking for - not a factory rifle.

I just sold my Kimber Montana .308 fiberglass rifle, and want something light and classic!

If the Blaser K95 and Merkel don't do it for you, there is also the Heym model 44 if it is still made. Otherwise, what about a Borovnik? Not sure whether that counts as a 'working rifle' for you or not.

G'day bonde,
this is my kipplauf made by Herbert Scheiring of Ferlach, Austria. Don't know if its got " jagerverschluss " as I don't know what that is. These rifles are all custom made and mine is the plainest I've ever seen. Quality is as good as you will ever see. It was made about 1980 and I believe he's still turning them out. Its cal. is 7x65R, has a 1.5-6x Zeiss claw mounted scope is one of the most wonderful rifles I will probably ever own.

Yes, it is the Ferlach iteration of old Franz Jaeger's "Kippblockverschluss" DRPatent Nr.209113 of 1906. Some Ferlach gunmakers build guns on such actions since about 1970, of course without mentioning Jaeger. They usually build them as snap-action underlevers and use a round boss, visible in the photos, instead of F. Jaeger's flange, to lock the tilting breechblock into the top-rib extension. Blaser reinvented this action and even managed to patent it to use it on their K95 and several others, and consequently Merkel feared legal troubles when they introduced a similar action. Following an advice from GGCA circles, they expressly advertized their K and B series as having a "Jaeger-Kippblock-Verschluss" and never heard a thing from Blaser. Jaeger's breech design is regarded as the strongest break-open breech, as there is no pressure to be taken by the action bar. You may even disassemble such a gun, load the barrel, slip on the breechblock, tape it in place and fire the cartridge by hitting the firing pin/striker with a hammer. That breechblock, if properly fitted, will not move the slightest.

Just got the newest, 12/2010 DWJ. It shows the newest offering of the C.G.Haenel GmbH, Suhl www.cg-haenel.de , the model "Jaeger 9" single barrel Kipplaufbuechse. This rifle has Franz Jaeger's Kippblockverscluss too and will be available in these calibers:6.5x57R; 6.5x65R; .270Win; 7x65R; .308Win; .30-06; .30R Blaser; 8x57IRS; 9.3x74R; 7mmRemMag; .300WinMag. It comes with a cocking slide on the tang and a single-set trigger. As it is slanted for the lower price market, when we are talking Kipplaufbuechsen, it is said to cost about Euro 1500.-. It does not yet appear on their website, but contacting them may be worthwhile.

It's got their kipplaufbuchse Jaeger9 in the flash catalogue, you'll have to click a bit on the side of the picture on that page to get it to 'flick pages'or the white arrow 'next page'.

As Franz Jaeger himself rarely made single-shot rifles on his Kippblockverschluss actions, you are stuck with rhe factory rifles by Blaser, Merkel or now Haenel, or you go to one of the custom-made Ferlach ones if you require that action. A Ferlach rifle, even if without much engraving, made as a working rifle, will set you back several times the cost of one of the factory offerings. Current starting price for the factory offerings, lowest grade, in Euro: Blaser = 2786.-: Merkel = 2798.-; Haenel = 1498.-. A Ferlach made rifle will be at least 8000.-

The Haenel is priced more "right" beeing a factory rifle in my view, than the Blaser. Or Merkel.

What is the build quality like on the Haenel? Accuracy?

I haven't had time to look further into the Scheiring yet, but sounds like a rifle to my recuriments.

G'day Kuduae,
thanks for the info on the breaching system used on my rifle. Very interesting stuff. This rifle has fired many, many thousands of rounds and is still as tight as the day it was made. This rifle opens and closes without the slighest sound and has that solid feel that tells you that it has class.

Bonde; Mr Scheiring does have a web site, but I don't think there are any prices listed. He also makes a double with this breach and if I ever come into some real money, one of these will also help hold my safe down. I could then die a contented man.
