Montana Black Bear--2010
      #169840 - 19/10/10 05:42 AM

Was out scouting for elk this past weekend..was glassing the hills when I spotted what appeared to be a dead steer laying on the edge of some timber..after closer inspection, noticed a pretty good sized black bear eating on him...only rifle with me was my coyote gun...using a .243 loaded with 70 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tips...

Snuck to within 240 yards...the bear rested his head on the steer carcass..I let one fly--hit him through the eyeball....turned out to be a really nice bear..guessing he was 8 to 10 years old...

Ripp

this is the steer he was feeding on...

And the bear..

Great bear Ripp! And what an unusual shot!

Can you shoot as many bears as you want, or is there a limit?

Good shot on a descent bear, Ripp. Notice how he doesn't look like Mickey Mouse.

How do you say, "Lights Out" more quickly than that?

Any evidence on what killed that steer?

RIPP:

Great job.

Gotta laugh. I got skunked. First time in 9 years. Covered 400 miles...no bear.

But sick minds think alike.

Here's an eyeshot from a bear a while back. Ya'know, you'll ruin the skull, blah blah, blah... I think it looks kinda cool.

Who cares. I don't eat the skulls.

This eye shot was done with a .303 British; 180 grain Remington CLRN over 45 grains 4350.

Congrats on the bear. It is a dandy!

Congratulations, he's a nice bear. How's the pelt, was he priming up good?

The wife's wanting to get her first bear. So far this fall all I've called in was a sow, pretty chocolate brown hide, but we let her pass. Had another, this one with cubs and wouldn't have shot anyway, coming in but the neighbor's cows chased her off. Called in and shot a nice (squared out a bit over 6'6") old boar at about 18 yds this spring, now got to get her one.

Again congrats, looks like that luck is holding out real good. Them elk better worry!

NO Eric there is a limit--can shoot one---in Montana-every year I purchase what is called a "sportsmans license"..for that fee I can shoot a bear, elk, deer, and hunt game birds..might be others as well, but pretty sweet deal..I have purchased that package for the past 20 plus years..

I am guessing it was NOT the bear---as there was no blood all around or indicating where there was a big struggle going on..having grown up on a ranch/farm...cattle just die...who knows, might have eaten something wrong, or gotten an infection from something, ..but no--the rancher went over after we notified him of the kill..he didnt know either...

thank you--and you are correct--could care less about the skull--if anything..will make for an intersting conversation piece..

Hope all is well--see your governor told the feds to stick it with the recent wolf decision..no more checking into wolf kills..basically, let the hunters kill them when they see them..is what i got out of reading the article in the paper this morning..good for him..Feds started this shit..let them clean it up...
